Cordelia is top of our list at the moment

Thought? Any similar names we might like?

Pretentious

TooFancyNancy · 23/04/2025 19:55

Not keen

BKBH · 23/04/2025 19:56

What would you shorten it to??

Marmaladelade · 23/04/2025 19:56

I love it, it’s beautiful

ticktockclocked · 23/04/2025 19:56

All I think is the tv show Buffy so I like it but only if you don’t mind people asking if it’s from Buffy

Fourpaw · 23/04/2025 19:56

Love it. Beautiful, elegant name.

MiddleAgedDread · 23/04/2025 19:56

I agree, highly pretentious unless you’re the sort of person who lives on a country estate, drives an old battered Land Rover and has a Labrador in every colour.

nocoolnamesleft · 23/04/2025 19:58

I quite like it. But I would assume you were a fan of King Lear, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or the Vorkosigan Saga novels by Lois McMaster Bujold.

S0j0urn4r · 23/04/2025 19:58

I like it.
"The name Cordelia is of Latin origin, meaning "heart" or "daughter of the sea". It also has a Celtic connection, possibly from the name Creiryddlydd, which translates to "daughter of the sea,"

I know a Cordelia. She is Cordi for short. Great name.

I also love both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.

I like it... similar are:
Cressida
Cecelia

Velvetbee · 23/04/2025 20:01

We had a little one locally, she was ‘Dilly’,
like it very much, not common but known.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 23/04/2025 20:02

I love it.

RedHelenB · 23/04/2025 20:02

Cordelia conjures up Anne of Green Gables. I thinknthe shortened name would be dee

SeaDragon17 · 23/04/2025 20:03

Whilst it’s a nice name in itself I just can’t say it in my head without and awful horsey / ballet mum posh accent. “Oh Cordelia darling, once you’ve finished your canter it’s time for cello practice before Tarquin’s mummy picks you up for the trip to Scotland to stay at his family pile”

Roselilly36 · 23/04/2025 20:03

I had a friend that also loved the name, but she was put off it when someone said to her Corr! Delia.

AliBaliBee1234 · 23/04/2025 20:04

Sorry OP it reminds me of the stepmum in Beetlejuice

EllieQ · 23/04/2025 20:05

I love it and it was on our short list, but in the end DD didn’t look like a Cordelia! Like @nocoolnamesleft , I would assume it was inspired by King Lear, the Vorkosigan series books (our inspiration), or Cordelia from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Also Anne of Green Gables!

chattyness · 23/04/2025 20:05

I used to work with a lovely lady named Cordelia , she hated it and preferred to be called Dee

I completely agree! 😂

How about Claudia?

Tallisker · 23/04/2025 20:08

Shorten it to Coco ☺️

juneisjuly · 23/04/2025 20:09

I have watched and enjoyed Buffy, dh hasn't and the name was originally his suggestion.

I don’t think it’s a negative or big enough association to put us off though.

Yes, we liked that meaning. DH used to be a surf instructor and we love the sea.
