Cordelia is top of our list at the moment

Thought? Any similar names we might like?

I agree, highly pretentious unless you’re the sort of person who lives on a country estate, drives an old battered Land Rover and has a Labrador in every colour.

Don’t be daft. It’s not the 80s. Names line Emilia and Isabella are ten a penny, Cordelia isn’t going to stand out.

I like it because it makes me think of the spunky daughter in King Lear - saying that I don’t really like Cordy or Dee as short forms, and it will get shortened, so that might put me off

Allegra
Domenica
Claudia
Cassia
Constancia
Marina (another sea ref)
Paloma
Olympia
Fernanda
Adela
Serena

might be others

Also Cecilia but that and its variations are getting quite popular so you might not want that

I know a Cordelia,, she is about 55 now. The only one I've heard of..
I think it could have come from a Harold Robbins book??

It’s from King Lear!

lifeisgoodrightnow · 25/04/2025 08:31

Our Cordelia somehow gets shortened to Ellie not sure how but it works.

another Cordelia - Cordelia Gray PD James character- unsuitable job for a lady.

NefiBlw · 25/04/2025 08:36

Cornelia is nice too.

Yes, we liked that meaning. DH used to be a surf instructor and we love the sea.

I like it. Better than all the Olivias and Emilys.

MightAsWellBeGretel · 25/04/2025 16:58

It makes me think of King Lear and Cat's Eye, where Margaret Atwood's protagonist asks why anyone would call their daughter after such a tragic character (Cordelia).

Griffindora · 25/04/2025 17:32

Beautiful name! Especially like it shortened to ‘Dilly’. A few years’ ago I sat next to a father with a little girl by this name at a pavement cafe in London, we struck up a conversation. She was a little cutie and quite a character. I remember thinking how the name suited her. I’d go for it!

Cordelia conjures up Anne of Green Gables. I thinknthe shortened name would be dee

I've never known a Cordelia in RL, but it has a satisfying sound to it when you say it, I think.
I would think Delia would be a nice diminutive.

Sundappledlawn · 25/04/2025 22:33

Very lah-di-dah

I think of Brideshead and how Cordelia has, via some church charitable scheme, has African children named Cordelia in her honour.

Also she is Lady Cordelia and I do tend to think it is quite a posh-posh name.

I always think of the “six little black Cordelias” too.

merryhouse · 25/04/2025 22:54

I love it, but I always think "call you Cordelia?"

I like Cordie too.

SallyWD · 25/04/2025 23:22

A bit too posh for me. Posh names always sound try hard.

Baninarama · 26/04/2025 21:11

I know one - her name is shortened to Deya. It's a great name and you're unlikely to have two in a class, unlike if you called her something basic like Sophie or Olivia.

Nichebitch · 26/04/2025 21:18

My DD is called Cordelia and buffy never crossed my mind - I love king Lear. Also, I don’t own a country state or a dog of any kind, and actually grew up in a 50m2 flat.
she likes to be called Cordi. There’s another one in her school.
some people can’t understand others liking different things and need to be offensive for some reason. I could have a guess at the names they would choose but I rather don’t.

She’s the heroine of King Lear though imho

I love it.

Of course you do, it's Anne's favourite name!

LaurenBacalls · 26/04/2025 21:41

Cordelia Chase people!

yes I’m a Buffy fan. Buffy aside, I think it’s a beautiful name and unique.

MotherOfVizslas · 26/04/2025 21:42

I think it’s really pretty. Little Baby Cordy🥰

She is hanged by a traitor in prison, at a very young age though. It’s a miserable association. Like Ophelia! Fwiw I don’t really understand why anyone would use those names. But perhaps the Shakespeare association doesn’t bother everyone or they have other reasons to choose them 🤷‍♀️

WinterKitchen · 26/04/2025 21:48

I love Cordelia. Don't shorten it to Delia though that's old lady.

She was the only truthful one of the three daughters and the only loyal one to her father. She loved him authentically and not as means to the end of a larger inheritance. The king of France married her for her virtue and her father ordered her death but once he realised the truth of things called it off; she was killed before the order was rescinded. Her sisters lived in depravity but she died with honour.

abricotine · 26/04/2025 22:29

@ThreeLuckyStars I do know all that already, but wouldn’t choose to name my child after such a tragic figure no matter how virtuous! As I said, others may feel differently.

TheTerribleMaster · 26/04/2025 22:30

I adore this name and wanted it for a daughter alas I only had sons

ChocoChocoLatte · 26/04/2025 22:57

We have one and she’s an absolute doll. Not posh here either & she’s the only one we know.

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 26/04/2025 23:03

I liked it - for me, it recalls King Lear and Brideshead Revisited, not Buffy - but in the end we went with another Shakespearean name.
