Do you like your name?

I absolutely can’t stand mine! I think it’s because my parents used to screech it so much on a regular basis and teachers would both mispronounce it and mock it.

Does anyone like their name? I don’t think many people dislike theirs as much as I dislike mine but it’s probably because I have had no end of hassle with it in my life!

I love my name. I have had the mispronouncing and mocking forever too, it's a 'forrin' name. That never affected how I felt about my lovely name that is a reflection of my heritage.

Yes and No. Don't like my full name but love it's shortening. Never go by my full name but it's obviously on official documents etc.

Hate it. The long version is pretentious and the short version is more usually used for boys, so I was constantly missexed as a child (the pudding bowl haircut didn't help.) The name seems to be in favour on MN, but I shudder when I see it. There is another shortened version which I quite like, but seems a bit late to change now.

I certainly stood out amongst all the Sarahs, Emmas and Clares of my generation.

Well if it's Ruth, I think it's a lovely classic name.

Could be Sarah, it’s a classic name that seems to fit any generation and any time in history. You’d be hard pushed to guess how old a Sarah is.

I really like my name (see username). I think my mother did a good job choosing it. It's served me really well. I go by Abi, day to day, sounds like happy! 😀I think most people like it, too. I was named in the mid-seventies. It was not popular then. Spiked in the mid-nineties, so I have now heard of a few who are 20 years younger than me - I like that it's reasonably timeless. My children are school-age and there's only one that we know of in their school, so it's obviously dipping again, which I am glad of.

I have a Gaelic name and not one of the nice ones either. Mum was Irish. It's a pain in the arse. I just use a very short version as I'm sick of explaining it.

No, it's a virtue name and it doesn't fit me....

I love it. I've always gone by my middle name and I like it a lot, it's a classic and was the middle name of both my grandmother and her MIL, my great grandmother too. It's unusual these days, especially in the country I now live in.

My first name, however, I absolutely hate. I was only given it because my cousin was born just before me and got the name my parents intended to give me. They never used it either, always used my middle name.

Not particularly, seems to be liked by other people when it comes up on here now and again, touted as timeless and a classic, but I think it's a bit bland. I am glad that I wasn't given one of the very popular names that were commonly used around the time I was born however as I really dislike some of those names, so swings and roundabouts I suppose.

I really hate my name, it's from the 1940's but I was born in the seventies. It has never been popular and is such a harsh name.

Love it - it’s classic, timeless, incredibly international and used in the Bible as well as by a lot of classic authors and Shakespeare and in film and songs (so everyone knows how to spell and pronounce it). Yet it’s rarely made the Top 100 in the UK, so I’ve usually been the only one in school and at work.

But the problem with being lucky enough to have been given a really great name by my parents means it’s even harder to name my own children - I struggled to find a name that ticked as many boxes as my own.

Love my first name but don't like my first name last name combo. Too many syllables and awkward to link together. Plus my surname is quite unusual - Google tells me there is only me with my name combo. Though I know of others with variations of my first name last name.

I don't mind spelling my name(s) all the time, but hate how awkward I feel introducing myself.

I LOVE my full name but hate the shortening that was chosen for me. I have asked friends and family to use the un-shortened version and they have all said no!

I really like my full name, and also the shortened versions. The only criticism ever aimed at it is that it’s a bit ‘horsey’. I can live with that 😁.

Ive grown to genuinely love it. Hated it as a kid, classic but with lots of teasing potential.

No I absolutely detest it. ( Clare) I've never truly forgiven my Parents for my name, well my Mum really as Dad just said "That's your department, names."😂.
I hate the fact that it can't be shortened. I've toyed with changing it but I feel it would be disloyal to my Mum.

@Awwlookatmybabyspider ❤️I think Clare is really pretty - I even knew a Clare at school who was an Elizabeth on the BC (so really the ultimate timeless name with a zillion shortening choices) but who chose to go by her middle name of Clare as she liked the sound of it better. Goes to show you that parents can’t win when choosing names🤣

I have a name that lots of people can't pronounce and I have to spell out constantly. However I love it and wouldn't change it.

I love it now, think it's got a lovely sound. It wasn't 'girly' enough to my ears when I was little, though. It was quite unusual for my age group, but became incredibly popular about 10/15 years later.

I've always liked mine, plus my friends call me Alibongo or Al or other nice things, and I enjoy that.
