Do you like your name?

I absolutely can’t stand mine! I think it’s because my parents used to screech it so much on a regular basis and teachers would both mispronounce it and mock it.

Does anyone like their name? I don’t think many people dislike theirs as much as I dislike mine but it’s probably because I have had no end of hassle with it in my life!

Mine is so boring. It was very popular in the mid 80s, so I always had tonnes in my class and now it really dates me. I feel sorry for today's Olivias and Evies!

Crispynoodle · 02/03/2025 11:50

I love mine

TheScottishPlay · 02/03/2025 11:50

Yes! It's an easily recognised classic but relatively uncommon. It's not loved on MN mainly due to the perceived unpleasant characteristics of those with the name!

salemcooper · 02/03/2025 11:50

I love mine. It's a foreign name because my parents are both European but it's easily said in English. It's unique without being difficult and I always liked being the only person being referred to when it was used.

BurntBroccoli · 02/03/2025 11:51

No I really don't like my name at all. I wish I'd changed it when I was 18. My brother and sister have really nice names so not sure why j was given such an awful one.

It's affected who I am I'm sure as I got bullied at school because of it. So I became a withdrawn and shy child who had no confidence.

Lovelynames123 · 02/03/2025 11:55

Yes, I do now but I mostly go by a shortened version. It's Lucinda so well known but not super common. I've given my daughters uncommon names as well and they love them

Christwosheds · 02/03/2025 11:56

I don’t mind it but prefer the name I almost had, which is a slightly different version of my name. My parents didn’t use it as it had the same initial as my sibling.

mummysmagicmedicine · 02/03/2025 11:57

Hated it as a child, it’s unique but same again with how my parents used to screech it.

but since becoming an adult with friends, DH etc and how gently they say my name I now love it and get so many compliments on it!

Mine is Louise (middle name Elizabeth). I like it! I don't meet many other Louise's as it was mostly a middle name in my era.

I think it's timeless and pretty.

Same ! I love it, too.
I was born late 60s so in primary and secondary, I was 1 of 3 in a class. At least. It never bothered me though.
Everyone else, yes, their middle name.

MistyF · 02/03/2025 12:00

If my name wasn't mine name, it would have been on my list for daughter. But don't know would I actually use it, since I like different names from my own name. It was also slightly dated when I was a kid. Name was used in multiple different EU countries few decades before, it's royal name (Greek family) and there's a song for it, but nowadays it's not even remotely popular.
I'm from small EU country.

Dazedandconfusedma · 02/03/2025 12:02

I love my name and always have - it’s a bit unusual and the shortened version sounds rude , but even when I used to get teased sometimes at school I still loved it…

Ohisitjustme · 02/03/2025 12:04

No, mine is a well used name, not very pretty or interesting. Think Sarah, Louise, Niamh , Aoife, Claire, Jenny , Deirdre

One of a few in my class all the time. Just a bit of a non descript name

Snowmanscarf · 02/03/2025 12:04

Don’t mind it, and was often the first one someone had had met, although it’s not that unusual or unique. Seems to gaining popularity on the baby name threads.

TidyDancer · 02/03/2025 12:06

Yes I love my name. It's not extremely unusual but never been in the top 10 either. You wouldn't be able to guess my age from it. It's a so-called royal name (although not one belonging to any current senior royals) and I usually see it described as classic or timeless etc. I'm very lucky my parents chose well!

My brother and sister have ‘normal’ names too. About as standard 80s names as you can imagine.

Nope. I've never liked it. I think it's boring and bland and what you call your daughter when you can't think of anything else. It's one of the four standard names that practically every girl between 1975 and 1985 was called.

ThunderFog · 02/03/2025 12:17

Don't like it but as a handle it works. It is international and blandly feminine.
I knew one other girl with same first name so as a child it seemed ordinary without being confusing. At work I had a colleague with same first+lastname and I didn't like that but it's actually quite unusual.
I asked my closest friends to change my first name (to a variation of the name) a few times but got told I was being weird, self-indulgent, and attention-seeking.

imtherelala · 02/03/2025 12:21

I like my name because i dont hear it much now i hear all the other types of it but not mine.
My son has a thai name no problems with it.

RareMaker · 02/03/2025 12:23

Hate constantly spelling it

Ddakji · 02/03/2025 12:26

I didn’t for years and as a teen was once really nasty to my dad (who chose it) about it, which still makes me squirm 40 years later. Partly because I really didn’t like the short my family all used.
I don’t mind it these days (and never use that short!).

TwoRobins · 02/03/2025 12:27

No. I've always wanted to be called Caroline. I love it.

Justme2023123 · 02/03/2025 12:27

No I've never liked mine, and I'm in my early 40s now and still hate introducing myself to new people. It was out of date for most of my peer group.

Good point, Yes, your can be as revealing of your age as anything!

franke · 02/03/2025 12:31

No it's too long (10 letters) and very 60s. When I was born my mum had whittled the choice down to my name or Julia. Obviously she didn't choose Julia, but I so wish she had.
