Do you like your name?

I absolutely can’t stand mine! I think it’s because my parents used to screech it so much on a regular basis and teachers would both mispronounce it and mock it.

Does anyone like their name? I don’t think many people dislike theirs as much as I dislike mine but it’s probably because I have had no end of hassle with it in my life!

No not really- it's not an English name and a bit difficult for English only speakers to say so I used to dread people asking me my name when I was younger- not helped by the fact that I was quite a shy child!

CoralDreamer · 07/03/2025 19:17

I love mine. I was an 80’s baby and my mum gave me a relatively unusual name, but still an actual name, not made up, an odd spelling or a random word, if you see what I mean! I’ve only met a handful of people with the same name in real life. But as a child I never appreciated it because my name was never on the personalised stuff you could buy at the seaside, like the purses and headbands. Still irks me 😂

I don't really like the name in itself anyway but what makes it worse is I'm one of the below

Lindsey
Lyndsey
Lindsay
Lyndsay
Linsay
Linzi
Linzie
Lynzie
Lynzi
Linsey

I've probably seen more but nobody gets it right. It's not the most common spelling either.

Yes! My name is an unusual name that, for English people, isn't pronounced as it's spelt. Something that people make much of on here as being a huge issue.
I do have to tell people how to pronounce it but it's only 2 syllables so it's not hard.
I find it a nice ice breaker as people often ask me it's origin.
I also find it a good arsehole filter - people will out themselves quite quickly by being rude about it or refusing to pronounce it correctly. Given that most people are generally decent though this doesn't happen often...

@Togglebullets is it Niamh?

familyissues12345 · 07/03/2025 20:35

It's ok, very classic and I know an awful lot of them who were all born in the 80's Grin

I like my middle name, it's pretty, but I really dislike the typical nickname that goes with it so I would never choose to use it as a first name

DrunkPuppy · 07/03/2025 21:24

I'm Saoirse. Despite what people tell you on MN, I've lived in five different countries and I've never had any issues, people usually get it when they're told. I like it.

@Awwlookatmybabyspider ❤️I think Clare is really pretty - I even knew a Clare at school who was an Elizabeth on the BC (so really the ultimate timeless name with a zillion shortening choices) but who chose to go by her middle name of Clare as she liked the sound of it better. Goes to show you that parents can’t win when choosing names🤣

The irony of it is id probably quite like it if I wasn't saddled with it. 😂

Ricecakesaremyjam · 07/03/2025 21:31

No. It’s boring and there’s nothing cool or pretty about it.
I would love to be brave enough to change it by deed poll, but I feel embarrassed to suddenly announce to everyone I know that I wish to be called by a different name, artist formerly known as prince vibes

Clingfilm · 07/03/2025 22:04

Love mine, though it dates me and is often misheard. It looks nice written down, flows nicely and I love my first initial.

FishFingersForMeForTea · 07/03/2025 22:20

Im not keen on my name. Its always been an old lady name. As I'm getting older Im more at ease with it. Or maybe just don't care about it anymore!

RosaAna · 07/03/2025 22:32

Yes I like it, it is quite a common name but people always get the spelling wrong as I spell it the European way.

bluesatin · 07/03/2025 22:46

Love mine. I have never met anyone with the same name, though since the Internet I have discovered that there are a few around the world.

Dustmylemonlies · 07/03/2025 23:02

I don't hate it but I'm very 'meh' about it. It's a bit frumpy sounding and is mispronounced by anyone from outside of the U.K. And it doesn't really lend itself to any cool sounding nicknames. But changing it at my age would just be weird...

I don't like mine at all.

Both first and middle name are boring and were overused (always together) in the 70s. There were several my names in every class at school. Even now I have 17 people with the same name in my phone contacts.

Almost all of those have the same middle name as me. The others have the only other option. 🙄🙄 I made an effort to give my dds more unusual names, although I did make sure they weren't hard to spell or likely to be bullied for them.

Maybe, unsurprisingly, my answer is exactly the same a this. I don't hate my name but it's just so common and, yes, first and middle name together. My children have unusual names and like them.

evtheria · 08/03/2025 08:24

I'm okay with my first name: it's from another language; quite rare even in that one, so I've only met one other with the same; and it 'sounds' strong.
I am still secretly sad I will never find a keychain or bookmark with my name on it at the gift shop; it's very annoying how people say or spell it wrong (it's really simple both ways, not at all complicated!); and I dislike that it sounds similar to an oft-used English name.

edit: I also have a much-less-common UK surname, and I have found ONE other woman with my rare first name + surname on the internet! She lives in the US and I’m dying to contact her, hahah, it’s such an unusual combo of names that I can guess her family background.
