I have shortlisted the following and would like thoughts please;

Asher - DH thinks it sounds girly but I like that is classic (biblical)

Aston - reminds me of Aston in Birmingham one of the roughest towns! Don’t know if this is silly?

Ashton - both quite like but is it a bit of a mouthful?

For girls;

Sienna- lovely name just worry it’s a bit popular and overused

Dhillon - we both love but worry she’d resent us if constantly mistaken for a boy?!

We also don’t want a chav name!! I don’t think any of these are chavvy but if they are please be honest?!!

I like Ashton and Sienna, don't understand too mouthful comment. What makes Ashton mouthful, but Aston and Asher aren't?
Dhillon is chavvy, no way of seeing that name any other way

TidyDancer · 08/02/2025 17:06

None of your names are especially to my taste tbh but I would probably say Aston is the better of the boys names although they are all so similar. Sienna is nice. Dhillon I've only ever known as a surname and I don't think it makes a very nice first name and definitely not for a girl.

Barleysugar86 · 08/02/2025 17:09

I love Asher- it was on my boys wish list. I don't see it as feminine.

Sienna is really pretty. I have two kids at primary now and haven't met any others through any of their classes or school events so I don't think its overused at all.

Dhillon- I don't really get this name. I'd assume you made this up from a boys name to be trendy.

Ashton/ Aston are fine but I think Asher sounds better.

TabloidFootprints · 08/02/2025 17:11

Asher and Sienna.

Chuchoter · 08/02/2025 17:12

Asher - I know of someone who named their son Asher Price and he was teased and called Asda Price! I don't like the name. Ashley is better but only very slightly.

Aston - sounds like a backing dancer for a boy band.

Ashton - don't like it.

Sienna- it's ok.

Dhillon - absolutely dreadful.

theduchessofspork · 08/02/2025 17:15

Being brutally honest OP, I think they are all what some people would regard as c**v names (your word not mine).

Sienna wasn’t, but has rather gone that way, I know Asher is biblical but it’s had no great traditional of use in the UK and seems to have sprung up recently along with names like Jenson. Dhillon is really bizarre.

Moreteaandchocolate · 08/02/2025 17:16

I like Asher or Ashton as they shorten to Ash, which is a great nn.

Sienna is lovely and not overused round us.

MrsSamR · 08/02/2025 17:23

Sorry OP - these are really not good names. Sienna is the best of a bad bunch but like you say becoming a bit popular. Does your husband have any suggestions which we could comment on?

pleaseguveadvicenotattack · 08/02/2025 17:24

Thanks all! I think I’ll ditch Dhillon

I should add I don’t want something that will date ideally

I love Dylan for a girl, had it on my list but not your random spelling
Ashton is chavvy IMO

JimHalpertsWife · 08/02/2025 17:25

Dylan for a boy yes. Dhillon for a girl, no.

Sienna is lovely. Asher is lovely.

Bin the rest.

pleaseguveadvicenotattack · 08/02/2025 17:26

@MrsSamR sadly no: he hardly even gives me opinions on these.

all he has done is suggest stupid names from fantasy books he reads so I have to come up with them myself.

do you or anyone else have suggestions?

@Greeneyegirl Dhillon isn't a random spelling, it's a surname from the Punjab region.

Hate to say it, but I agree with this.

Asher is probably the least bad.

Words · 08/02/2025 17:52

Well, Aston is a suburb in the West Mids and Ashton is a run down town in greater Manchester.

They are all a bit chavvy t b h. ( sorry you did ask.)

Yes I know there is a royal child called Sienna. But there is also one called Harrison. No one is immune.

BootballJoy · 08/02/2025 18:07

Asher - very trendy, similar vibe to Jude, Ezra, Reuben etc. Fine.
Aston - not great
Ashton - a nice sound but very surnamey

I'd go Asher out of the boys' names.

Sienna is fine - I always think it's a bit like Joanna was in the 80s, that kind of feel.

Dhillon - this one is really confusing to me - it's a Sikh surname? Maybe for a similar sound something like Linden? Merryn?

theduchessofspork · 08/02/2025 18:40

pleaseguveadvicenotattack · 08/02/2025 17:36

@theduchessofspork thank you. I like Tristan but DH doesn’t 🙄

How bout Tobin - it’s more common in the US but kind of sounds like a version of Tony/Tobias

Or Torben - it’s Danish but fits well enough here.

Dearover · 08/02/2025 18:45

If you want a name which won't date, select a classic name. They're classics for a reason.

KittenPause · 08/02/2025 18:45

But they're all Chavvy names Confused

Vinni8 · 08/02/2025 18:51

I'd respectfully disagree with PP that Asher is chavvy! I like it quite a lot actually.

I don't think Sienna is chavvy either but it's also not particularly special.

The only Ashton I know is a girl, but I don't like it on either gender. Definitely no to Aston, sorry.

BeaLola · 08/02/2025 18:56

Really sorry but do not like any on list. Sienna is the only one that's is not to bad (imo) but it's very popular at moment.

You say you don't want a name that won't date so go classic?

Lots to chose from

Josfusthecat · 08/02/2025 18:57

Are we still using the word chavvy 😤 just unbelievable
