I have shortlisted the following and would like thoughts please;

Asher - DH thinks it sounds girly but I like that is classic (biblical)

Aston - reminds me of Aston in Birmingham one of the roughest towns! Don’t know if this is silly?

Ashton - both quite like but is it a bit of a mouthful?

For girls;

Sienna- lovely name just worry it’s a bit popular and overused

Dhillon - we both love but worry she’d resent us if constantly mistaken for a boy?!

We also don’t want a chav name!! I don’t think any of these are chavvy but if they are please be honest?!!

I'd flip the sounds you like to the opposite sex, tbh.

Asha is lovely for a girl and Dylan for a boy.

@AvonCallingBarksdale i usually don’t care much for others however I think with names you should care what others think.

The reason because, you are inflicting judgement whether you like it or not on someone else.

when the child goes to school or gets a job, I won’t be around to help if people judge them or take the mic because of their name. So it’s only fair it’s a decent one!!

@Words He's Archie Harrison not Harrison.

I don't like the Ash names. Apart from Asher they seem dated, and there are nicer biblical names.

Sienna will be one of those names that will date. It became popular out of nowhere, probably because of Sienna Miller.
Babies called Sienna in England & Wales since 1996

Dhillon just seems a strange choice, and Dylan is a boy's name that has been given to some girls.

Most of the suggested names are not great.

If you want a name that won't date, pick something that hasn't come into use out of the current trend, or hasn't been used for decades.

If your DH likes names from fantasies, how about the name of a favourite author or a name from mythology.

Can I please have your opinions on Isla and Thea for a girl?

Can I please have your opinions on Isla and Thea for a girl?

Both lovely. Isla more commonly used than Thea (ime) but would suit children and adults, and not date.

pleaseguveadvicenotattack · 09/02/2025 12:35

@JimHalpertsWife he likes the name Caledon

Hmmm ok. I see what the problem is :)

Words · 09/02/2025 14:36

Obviously I know that.Archie is even worse - and as for the girl, words fail me, but I didn't want to go down that route.

Why do people shy away from strong, traditional, authentic names? Why this obsession with having something different ?

mumonthehill · 09/02/2025 14:42

Isla and thea are beautiful and much better than your original list. I do like Dylan spelt this way and for a boy though so maybe worth thinking about.

Boardingschoolmumoftwo · 09/02/2025 14:43

Sorry I think they’re all dreadful but particularly Dhilion (is this even a name) Sienna is the least awful but they are everywhere

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 09/02/2025 14:48

I don't like any on your original list but Isla and Thea are both lovely names.

Boardingschoolmumoftwo · 09/02/2025 14:49

Thea is lovely, what about Theodora, nn Thea/Teddie

Words · 09/02/2025 14:51

Thea is a bit better.

Words · 09/02/2025 14:52

Obviously as a diminutive of Theadora

GoldMoon · 09/02/2025 14:53

Asher - DH thinks it sounds girly but I like that is classic (biblical) Nice name

Aston - reminds me of Aston in Birmingham one of the roughest towns! Don’t know if this is silly? Another good one
Ashton - both quite like but is it a bit of a mouthful? No

For girls;
Sienna- lovely name just worry it’s a bit popular and overused Nice name not overused here.

Dhillon - we both love but worry she’d resent us if constantly mistaken for a boy? Don't like boy or girl

JimHalpertsWife · 09/02/2025 14:56

Words · 09/02/2025 14:52

Obviously as a diminutive of Theadora

Why obviously? Thea is lovely as a stand alone name if OP likes it.

pleaseguveadvicenotattack · 09/02/2025 14:59

I’ve also added Demi to the list of girls names

OP posts:
Words · 09/02/2025 14:59

Correction: Theodora. Which is rather grand

She could then be ' Dora' too, if there turned out to be too many children called 'Thea' in her playgroup or whatever.

Words · 09/02/2025 15:00

You are trolling us now, OP. Xmas Grin

JimHalpertsWife · 09/02/2025 15:08

Demi is hideous

Words · 09/02/2025 15:10

Demi Demi, oh with your eyes so blue... Demi Demi I am soooo in loooove with you hoo.

Go for it OP!

Can I please have your opinions on Isla and Thea for a girl?

Not another Isla! Over the last 10 years (or more?) it has gone from a Scottish name, quite rarely used in the rest of the UK to the point where practically every third baby girl is named Isla. I mean I don't mind it, it's perfectly inoffensive but just so BORING. It lacks personality somehow.

Thea - again inoffensive but a bit dull although less popular than Isla. And the other thing with Thea is that in a lot of accents (particularly from the South East), it can come out sounding like 'fear'.

Sienna is more interesting than either of those, although I still don't absolutely love it. And not chavvy - how is it chavvy? It first became popular when it was the very unusual name of an actress who was quite classy. I think the people saying chavvy just mean it's been popular across all sections of society for a few years now. Shockingly, some of those people will be less posh!

I mean, going by it's current popularity I fully expect that people will be calling Isla 'chavvy' in 10 years or less.

pleaseguveadvicenotattack · 09/02/2025 15:21

What’s the joke with Demi?!!! Did I miss something!!!

OP posts:
BootballJoy · 09/02/2025 15:22

I'd go Thea for a girl and Dylan for a boy. Were any more fantasy names suggested?

Pemba · 09/02/2025 15:24

Demi - noo! And people won't know how to pronounce it, I am not even sure about Demi Moore, I thought it was D'Mee, emphasis on the 'mee' part, but I've also heard people say it as Demmy. It's just not that classy and sounds like a nickname really.

What is wrong with a pretty, traditional name, eg Anna, Rosa, Zoe, Lucy, Emma, Charlotte ? Or something a little bit more unusual like Lucia or Eloise?

pleaseguveadvicenotattack · 09/02/2025 15:28

@BootballJoy yes but they were so silly I can’t even remember them 😭
