I have shortlisted the following and would like thoughts please;

Asher - DH thinks it sounds girly but I like that is classic (biblical)

Aston - reminds me of Aston in Birmingham one of the roughest towns! Don’t know if this is silly?

Ashton - both quite like but is it a bit of a mouthful?

For girls;

Sienna- lovely name just worry it’s a bit popular and overused

Dhillon - we both love but worry she’d resent us if constantly mistaken for a boy?!

We also don’t want a chav name!! I don’t think any of these are chavvy but if they are please be honest?!!

I would say that Asher and Sienna are nice. Why does your DP think Asher is girly? Is he imagining it's spelled Asha? But some boys names end in 'a' anyway, eg Luca or Asa.

He sounds a bit like my niece's partner, who wouldn't let her use the lovely name Eliza for their baby girl, saying that it was boyish. We've since worked out that he was probably thinking of Elijah.
I mean, who hasn't heard of Eliza?

If you like the sound Dhillon, I would spell it the normal way, Dylan. Fine for a girl especially popular in America. Dhillon is an Indian surname I think.

Ghostofallnightmares · 08/02/2025 19:13

Well since you mentioned it first. I think they all sound a bit chavvy. No to all - sorry.

MirandaBlu · 08/02/2025 19:52

I really like Asher. I don't see it as unisex (it is clearly a male name in Hebrew, even though a lot of Hebrew names are unisex) but the short form Ash is definitely unisex, maybe similar to something like Alex. I would, personally, consider using Ash for a boy or for a girl but Ashton (I've also seen it spelled Ashten) is OK too.

I like Sienna (or Siena), but agree that it's popular. I don't understand Dhillon, is it an alternate spelling of Dylan, or something else?

Some others you might like (apologies if duplicates from previous replies):

Afton
Akiva
Arden
Devon
Eden
Liraz
Morgan
Nina
Raven
River
Robin/Robyn
Savannah

When I say a name that doesn’t date I don’t mean James or something similar / I think James can be timeless but also have style,

For example Leona - isn’t a classic but doesn’t date either.

This is the feel I’m going for

sorry to cause offence with the word chav but I haven’t got the energy to be politically correct right now! You all know what I mean and I will continue to use the word chav. It’s only offensive if you think you are it!!!

I like Asher and Sienna. Don't like the others.

Alternatives: Jasper, Ezra, August, Finley, Elias, Elijah, Ethan, Austin
Girls: Serena, Summer, Savannah, Sadie, Vienna, Diana, Nina, Fiona

DrEggman · 08/02/2025 21:02

Sienna is overly popular and always paired with the obligatory Rose. I like Ashton and Asher.

londonlostsheep · 08/02/2025 21:08

Asher and Sienna, for sure!

Sienna is growing in popularity a lot but it’s a beautiful name.

louisabranchers · 08/02/2025 21:29

sienna is nice but my daughter got mistaken for senna which is a natural laxative. now everyone at school calls her stiff stool sienna. hope this helps x

Mirabai · 08/02/2025 21:36

I wouldn’t have said anything if you haven’t asked but they do all sound chavvy.

Dhillon is ok if you’re Sikh but it’s a surname.

arlequin · 08/02/2025 23:01

I like Asher! All the Ashers I know are Jewish.

Sienna is pretty.

Duckyfondant · 08/02/2025 23:16

Asher or Serena. I would love to be named either of these!

MedusaAndHerFavourites · 08/02/2025 23:18

I think that maybe you should consider more classic names if you want to avoid them being too trendy.

pleaseguveadvicenotattack · 09/02/2025 12:14

This is really getting me down. I don’t like any of the other suggestions.

did anyone just end up going with a name they like but didn’t love? It’s clear Asher and Sienna are least chav and generally most approved on this thread but I don’t love. But I like them more than the hundred of names I’ve beeen through!!

I just don’t want to regret it later

What fantasy names has he suggested?

MaltipooMama · 09/02/2025 12:27

Ashton is my favourite from your boys names, I'm actually from Birmingham and when I read Aston I immediately thought about the area, not a good association! 😂

From the girls names Sienna is my favourite, I know you said it might be too popular/common but I don't know any at all!

MaltipooMama · 09/02/2025 12:31

What about these as other options:

Girls:
Sage
Willow
Skye
Serena
Sierra
Elara
Savannah
Aria
Alina
Isla

Boys:
Hudson
Landon
Maddox
Julian
Adrian
River
Finn
Ezra
Jude
Caleb

pleaseguveadvicenotattack · 09/02/2025 12:34

@MaltipooMama i like Isla - thank you!

I also like Jude but DH thinks it’s truly and I immediately think of Jude Bellingham?

pleaseguveadvicenotattack · 09/02/2025 12:35

@MaltipooMama exactly re:Aston

we live outside Birmingham but not far from there so people will associate with it I think!

@JimHalpertsWife he likes the name Caledon

OP posts:
skinnyoptionsonly · 09/02/2025 13:00

Marianna

PiastriThePastry · 09/02/2025 13:07

Asher is nice but I’m not really sold on your other boys names. Ayrton? Jasper? Avery? Austin?
Sienna is a pretty name but if you don’t love it, you don’t love it! Savannah? Aubrey? Claudia? Serena?

GreyhoundGal1 · 09/02/2025 13:09

I'm sorry it's getting you down. The thing is the name is abstract right now and feels like a big deal. Once you name your child it, you will love it because it's your child's name. Most people have to compromise on a name because they don't necessarily have the same taste as their partner - I did and I wouldn't have called her that name if I was by myself but I absolutely love it now. She wouldn't have suited my choice at all. As long as the name is useable, like Asher, Sienna and Isla all are, it will be fine.

If he likes Caledon what about Callum, Cameron, Brandon, Aaron, Hudson, Harrison, Lennon, Cassian (similar to Caspian from lion the witch and the wardrobe), Jonah (sort of a mix between Jude and Asher)

AvonCallingBarksdale · 09/02/2025 13:19

Sorry, OP, I dislike all your suggested names but do think they are all quite a similar vibe. They are quite chavvy names. But…. really if those are sort of names you like you should go with them rather than shoehorning into names that you’re just not into. Who cares really what other people think??

OSU · 09/02/2025 13:28

I would go for Asher and Sienna. Don't think Asher is at all feminine and it doesn't matter a jot if Sienna is popular. I was in a tiny class at school where of the 4 girls, 3 of us had the same name. Then the class grew and 2 new girls joined who both also had the same name! None of us were in the least bit bothered. There was just increased use of surnames 😊
