My DP and I are expecting our first, surname will be his of Moon, which I absolutely love (didn't take my ex H surname for what I claimed were feminist reasons at the time but it was made easier cos his surname was complete shite)

Anyway as much as I love the surname I'm finding it can tend to make an otherwise 'normal' name come across more hippy dippy, not necessarily a bad thing but wanted to run by the mumsnet clan our shortlist:

Theodore 'Teddy' Moon
Rupert Moon
Jasper Moon
Felix Moon

For a girl the only one we really like and agree on is Matilda Moon.

Jasper or Felix are both really nice!

I don’t like Theodore and nn Teddy is really common. Not keen on Rupert but nn Roo is cute.

Matilda is nice too.

garlictwist · 08/02/2025 05:38

They are all super posh names. Rupert is awful (sorry!). I love alliterative names, however, so think Matilda Moon is fab.

KarminaBurana · 08/02/2025 05:55

Jasper and Felix are lovely. Teddy is fine, but a bit over done now, that may not matter to you though.

AllHisCaterpillarFriends · 08/02/2025 06:03

The (o) Moon is why I don't like Theo.

merrymelodies · 08/02/2025 06:18

I feel like changing my surname to Moon now! 😂

Mathilda Moon is a wonderful name. Theodore Moon doesn't trip as nicely over the tongue but it's still a good name. Felix is perfect. 👌

Rupert Moon is a welsh rugby player.

Edited

Yes please don't name him Rupert everyone will think he's named after him

UnpropitiousNightmares · 08/02/2025 06:59

The only one I dislike is Rupert, the other three are absolutely wonderful!! :)

I’m impressed how restrained everyone’s been by not suggesting Alfie!

Exactly

It has to be Alfie or Harvey surely 🤷‍♀️

bluebunnys · 08/02/2025 07:54

Why not an alliterative boys name beginning with M?

Magnus Moon
Maximilian Moon

Clytemnestra21 · 08/02/2025 09:35

Beautiful surname

AllHisCaterpillarFriends · 08/02/2025 09:46

Phoebe Moon.

Phoebe means moon.

Feliciacat · 08/02/2025 10:57

They’re all lovely names and you clearly have good taste. Mathilda Moon is great so at least you’ve got one certain choice.

The meaning of the word Moon does mean that Teddy Moon and Jasper Moon sound quite storybook. Jasper Moon in particular sounds like a hippy name. Rupert Moon is too ‘ooo ooo’ sounding plus it’s the rugby players name.

Felix is the best of the bunch but as a cat lover, I’d think he was named like ‘cat of the moon’ which is in the same vein as Jasper Moon and Teddy Moon with sounding ‘storybook’.

Perhaps an alliterative name would be best again. Just don’t choose a name that has connection to animals or gems because those will sound whimsical with Moon.

theduchessofspork · 08/02/2025 13:42

Felix goes best I think

I’d just avoid Teddy/Theodore because there are twenty billion of them

Moon is a great surname and I like Matilda but I think such a distinct surname plus alliteration is a bit much - she sounds like a character in a children’s book

Extraenergyneeded · 08/02/2025 14:42

Moon is one of our family tree names. I wonder if we are related?
If you message me I can send you some names e g

JessyCarr · 09/02/2025 00:17

How about Caspar Moon instead of Jasper Moon, to avoid the crystal-gazing?

mitogoshigg · 09/02/2025 00:29

@AnnaQuayInTheUk

I immediately thought the same.

Definitely not teddy op though Theodore is probably the best name to go with your surname, use Theo as a shortening.the rest seem awkward or comic

StScholastica · 12/02/2025 21:24

For a boy I think I'd go with something "spikey" to offset the soft sounding "Moon".
Eg; Patrick or Eric.
Matilda is very sweet.

BabyFever246 · 12/02/2025 21:28

As long as its not 'blue' or can have 'full' as a nickname you good

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/02/2025 01:39

Felix for me. Sounds interesting and cool with the surname.

fridaynight1 · 13/02/2025 02:47

Theodore (Teddy) Moon
Matilda (Tilly) Moon

Moon is a fabulous surname - I’d change for that too.

SophieGee · 13/02/2025 02:55

Lucas?

Starsandall · 14/02/2025 21:25

I think Felix flows best with Moon.

ExitPursuedByAPolarBear · 15/02/2025 05:23

Moon is such a gorgeous surname! I see what you mean about hippy dippy sort of names but I don’t see anything wrong with names that have a slightly whimsical feel, but I think your choices strike a great balance. Rupert Moon and Jasper Moon both sound particularly distinguished, while Felix Moon has a bit of a cool, storybook vibe. Matilda Moon is just lovely classic but with a touch of magic because of the alliteration. You’ve got a great shortlist!

If you’re open to more ideas, I think names like Hugo, Arthur, Louis, or Maxwell would pair beautifully with Moon for a boy. Barnaby, Leon, Ralph, or Edwin could also work well if you like something slightly different but still classic especially if you like Theodore. For a girl, Rosalind, Beatrice, Juliet, Cecily, Florence, or Eleanor would have that same timeless-but-not-too-hippy feel as Matilda. Such a great surname to work with!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 15/02/2025 15:28

I have a similar noun surname that makes a lot of names sound twee.
So all my family have very traditional solid names. And a bit boring.
I wanted a slightly Out There name for a potential daughter but she would have sounded hippy enough to run the Jasper Moon crystal shop with Onyx Winghover

Squirrelsnut · 15/02/2025 15:37

Felix.

Teddy Moon is a CBeebies show.
Jasper Moon is an alternative healing centre.
Rupert is a bit wet.
