Hi all,
What is your opinion on the baby name Jemima Beatrice. Beatrice is a family name so will be the middle name. Thank you😊

It’s the female version of James I believe. I like it.

I didn't know that!

I like it OP :)

quite liked Jemima as a name until dd became friends with one - they all call her Mima (as in mimer) which is awful......

Pemba · 16/12/2024 13:22

It's a nice name, I like it. Much nicer than Beatrice actually.

The puddle duck association is fine (and cute) but the US racial association is controversial over there. I believe it's a product, something to do with pancakes? Which features on the label an older black woman 'Aunt Jemima' which is a stereotype dating back to the bad old days of slavery in the USA. See also 'Uncle Ben's rice' which I can remember having here in the UK! Hmm, nobody says you can't call a boy Ben though? Maybe it's different.

I also know a Mima and always thought it's really lovely. Suits her. She probably is Jemima thinking about it, but haven't ever heard her called that. She gets called 'Meema' a lot though, which would irritate me. All personal opinion with names really innit!

NotVeryFunny · 16/12/2024 14:00

I love it.

I have a baby called Jemima. She gets called Mima by her toddler sister and she mostly gets called Jemi by us, but all my friends call her Jemima. Yes we got given a LOT of Jemima Puddleduck stuff from older relatives, but we don’t mind that. No one has mentioned the Aunt Jemima pancake mix stuff to our face and from what I have read online it has been rebranded. Her name has been so positively received, people are always saying how lovely it is to see a baby with that name. It’s familiar, but underused (especially where we live). I’m so glad we chose it for her. The only thing that makes me a little sad is that when we go into gift shops her sisters name (Matilda) is on everything, but Jemima’s isn’t.

Jemima Beatrice is lovely 🥰

Thank you for your comments everyone. I suppose not everyone will like the names I love, but we are going with them! We live in the Netherlands so I'm sure there will be pronunciation difficulties. Not worried about it sounding too posh as here everyone is considered equal regardless of how much money you have. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.

It’s lovely

Oh I absolutely love Jemima. If I ever had another little girl that's what I would call her. There is something really classy about it as an adult name too.

Thiswayorthatway · 17/12/2024 06:42

DS would have been a Jemima!

Pumpkincozynights · 17/12/2024 06:44

Re pronunciation difficulties - we (British) pronounce it Gem-my-ma but my French friend really struggles to say this and she says Gem-mee-ma. She is getting much better at saying her name properly each time we see her though!

Haggia · 17/12/2024 09:31

It’s better than Hamble, that’s for sure.

I have a Jemima - she's 19 and nobody has ever mentioned Aunt Jemima - but then we are in the UK so why would they? very rarely Jemima Puddleduck and only a few much older people have spoken of the doll from Playschool.

I still really like the name, she likes the name too, some of her friends call her Mimi, but mostly she's Jemima.

Strangely enough I also have a 17 year old Matilda! Great minds lol

Mistymorin · 17/12/2024 14:28

I would not associate Jemima with a programme that was on TV decades ago. Love it - your baby, your choice!

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/12/2024 14:28

Beautiful names.

KirstenBlest · 17/12/2024 14:46

It's a completely different name from James @angstridden2 , @Nothelpingishard .
It's said to mean 'Dove' and is from the Old Testament. James is from the New Testament and means 'supplanter'.

Wikipedia disagrees, but that's not necessarily worth anything 😂

Catandsquirrel · 17/12/2024 15:06

Really not to my taste, fussy and a bit silly sounding, sorry. Beatrice is nicer.

KirstenBlest · 17/12/2024 15:11

@Nothelpingishard , Jemima - Wikipedia, James (given name) - Wikipedia
Wiki agrees with what I posted.

Mooetenchante · 17/12/2024 15:13

I like Jemima, can be a nn Jemma, or Mima.

KirstenBlest · 17/12/2024 15:15

I prefer Jemima to Beatrice but both are nice. Mimi and Mima are awful though. Jemma/Jem's ok.

SereneCapybara · 17/12/2024 15:17

Both gorgeous names. personally I prefer Beatrice so I'd swap them over, but it is a lovely name, in either order.
