Hi all,
What is your opinion on the baby name Jemima Beatrice. Beatrice is a family name so will be the middle name. Thank you😊

Jamima is awful. It reminds me of play school years ago

Notsure1 · 17/12/2024 15:22

My daughter is a Jemima's
She is now 29! When I named her most other people thought of Jemima the doll from Playschool. She rarely gets called anything else but if she does it's normally Jem. I still love her name, at the time Jemima Goldsmith was marrying Imran Kahn and that's where I heard the name. She was going to be Georgia but there were so many that I changed it at the last minute. Funnily enough when the midwife visited she told me that there was another Jemima born around the same time and one of my Jemima's friends is actually friends with her Grin

Prefer Beatrice. And yes too much Betrix Potter ref.

@Nothelpingishard , Jemima - Wikipedia, James (given name) - Wikipedia
Wiki agrees with what I posted.

Wouldn't have said it without checking first. But as I said, Wikipedia isn't exactly a reliable source

While I got the Hamble joke it's not something that would put me off the name.

I much prefer Jemima to Beatrice which for some reason reminds me of Beatroot. Sorry Op. But i get that's probably just me and it's perfectly fine as a middle name and lovely if it's a family name. There is something special about using a family name.

KirstenBlest · 17/12/2024 17:56

@Nothelpingishard , it does say 'by folk etymology', which is about the same as saying that 'some people say'. Given that Jemima was the daughter of Job, and James was of Latin origin, they are unlikely to be related.

It's probably like saying Joanne is used as a feminine form of Joseph.

mitogoshigg · 17/12/2024 18:01

It's a doll (play school bbc tv programme) or puddle duck but I do like it. I believe it is quite sensitive though in the USA, definitely a African American name

Cynic17 · 17/12/2024 18:14

I love Jemima - very elegant.

Winter20245 · 17/12/2024 23:34

Jemima, Tallulah, Delilah.

GreenTeaLikesMe · 18/12/2024 03:37

I like it. I think the US connotation will disappear over time, as eventually nobody will remember Aunt Jemima's pancakes (the brand name was discontinued in 2020), and if she were to go and live in the US she could go by Jem or Jemma.

RickiRaccoon · 18/12/2024 04:36

Cute. I know one Jemima who is very smart and very nice.

WhereAreWeNow · 18/12/2024 22:39

For me the Beatrix Potter/Jemima Puddleduck connotation is too strong. Either name is nice but personally I wouldn't put the two together.

user1492757084 · 19/12/2024 01:29

Jemima Beatrice is sweet. Very nice peacemeaning.
Jemima Beatrix is my preference in spelling though.
Also love Jamima Beatrix.

dogwlllwalk · 19/12/2024 20:39

Love the name Jemima.
Yes it does have a posh vibe but also pretty and quirky
I know a lovely little Jemima so could only ever have good associations with this name.

renthead · 24/12/2024 07:40

I have a little Jemima. We live in Canada and it's quite unusual here, but no one has mentioned pancakes in years. She has a lot of family nicknames but is mostly Jemima.

@Notsure1 I also got the name from Jemima Khan! I was completely fascinated by her as a teen in the 90s.

Nothing wrong with Playschool! I had a Jemima rag doll because of it. (Hamble was definitely verging on creepy, though 😁)

cariadlet · 24/12/2024 09:35

I think it's lovely. I work with a Jemima who is in her 20s and she's always known as Jemima rather than a shorter version.

I'm of an age where I do also think about Playschool but I grew up thinking that she was beautiful (unlike poor, creepy Hamble) so it's not a negative connection and it won't mean anything to younger people so it's irrelevant anyway.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 24/12/2024 09:45

I always thought I didn't much like the name Jemima, not because of any particular associations but just as a collection of sounds. But there's something about the combination Jemima Beatrice that really appeals to me. It's unusual without being weird, classy without being snooty. I say go for it!

Gem359 · 24/12/2024 09:58

To me it's very posh and prissy. I don't really like the sound.

Footle · 24/12/2024 10:08

Used to know a lovely one , often known as Jimey. Great name.

averythinline · 24/12/2024 11:25

Like both known a couple of Jemimas both great..

Neither shortened....as adults dont know as kids....

Lovely with Beatrice as well

caringcarer · 24/12/2024 11:34

I think it's a pretty name. Not very used so unlikely to be another Jemima in her class.

HonestCrab · 26/12/2024 14:45

Jemima is lovely. Not keen on Beatrice. Nothing wrong with it though. I do think the names together are a bit too Beatrix Potter. Jemima Patrice for a similar sound?

BugsyMaroon · 26/12/2024 16:32

I love Jemima. It was one I suggested but DS1 was a DS.

I know of a single Jemima in the wild. She is 14 and a gifted musician and singer and a really lovely person. So my associations are all very very positive.

Muthaofcats · 26/12/2024 16:36

Puddle duck
