What do you think of Mendel?

Easy to pronounce. It means 'Comfort' and I really love it

I like Levi but don't like it pronounced like the jeans. Has to be 'Lev-ee' like 'Lovey' but with an e instead of an o.

DD is called Golda Lola

Strangely, we often call her Golda Lola! But she is always introduced as Golda and is Golda at school now

It sounds like Mental to me?!

Terrribletwos · 26/09/2024 19:48

Not good with the associations.

My first thought too.

Terrribletwos · 26/09/2024 19:50

That was Menzel sorry but it did make me think of him.

Terrribletwos · 26/09/2024 19:51

Mengel!

I assume you're Jewish, as in Mendel as the Yiddish version of Menachem.

I'm not keen on the name personally. It would sound like a surname to anyone outside the Jewish community.

Keroppi · 26/09/2024 19:53

Golda is cute. Not a fan of Mendel - makes me think of the geneticist.
I like Ezra, Yakov, Zephaniah, Zachariah, Eli, Ari, Obadiah, Amos.

RaininSummer · 26/09/2024 19:53

Odd name. I thought I'd Mendel and the pea experiment.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 26/09/2024 19:54

OMG no! 😱

mumofaboynow · 26/09/2024 19:54

I love Ezra but it's just so over used by everyone nowadays

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 26/09/2024 19:54

No. I wouldnt.

Lolatusernamesuggestions · 26/09/2024 19:55

I'm sure we cover this person in the genetics module with our students. Aye we do. Baby would be named after a prominent scientist.

Ihaveoflate · 26/09/2024 19:56

I used to love Ezra, but it is very popular in my Jewish circles.

If my girl had been a boy we'd have gone for Solomon/Solly, but that's also quite popular.

Edited

He's sometimes referred to as 'The father of genetics' I think

Gregor Mendel.

But his name wasn't from a Hebrew background so a bit different

I've googled and can't find anything 'awful' about him when typing out his background but maybe I'm missing something due to someone upthread mentioning 'associations' Blush

I know. I know quite a few Ezras, Amos

I do like E names. Elijah, Eli, Ephraim, Ezekiel
We have a Naphtali family name.. love it but DH vetoed it 🙄

Blondiney · 26/09/2024 19:58

Mendel Health.

Are you Mendel!?

Thistooshallpass. · 26/09/2024 20:00

My first thought was Jozef Mengele - assuming you are of Jewish heritage I think it would be seriously wrong to use Mendel .

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 26/09/2024 20:00

I have no idea whether this is real or jest. The opening post didn’t read as genuine.

Lovelysummerdays · 26/09/2024 20:00

Makes me think of the geneticist too but also of mengele possibly just me.

Ihaveoflate · 26/09/2024 20:02

What about Eliezer? It was Leonard Cohen's Hebrew name, so I like it 😆

I also like it shortened to Eli

Why? I am a Jew so my circle is quite big - I know a lot of men called Mendel! And one 4 year old

It is Yiddish (has other origins too, I believe, but it's Yiddish)

I quite like it! I too thought of the pea bothering monk. Also love Naphtali. And Asher.

I think if you spelt the name Levy people would pronounce it how you like it
