What do you think of Mendel?

Easy to pronounce. It means 'Comfort' and I really love it

I like Levi but don't like it pronounced like the jeans. Has to be 'Lev-ee' like 'Lovey' but with an e instead of an o.

DD is called Golda Lola

Strangely, we often call her Golda Lola! But she is always introduced as Golda and is Golda at school now

It did make me think Gregor Mendel.
But I don't think that matters, I quite like it. I think it's nicer than Levi.

mumofaboynow · 26/09/2024 20:14

I too thought of the pea bothering mon

That made me laugh out loud Grin

Yes, Naphtali is gorgeous! Wonder if people will call him 'naff' though

I read that he was only ever a monk to get himself free eduction. Interesting!

Me too and the pea plants.

I think Tally is more likely.

Tigertiger23 · 26/09/2024 20:17

My first thought was Mendel the scientist. Wasn't he a monk who bred pea plants 😂

Oceangreyscale · 26/09/2024 20:20

Pretty sure some of my ancestors who arrived in the UK from Eastern Europe were Golda and Mendel.
I wouldn't pick it but it's ok.
I don't get the Mengele association others gave, that's totally different!
I did also have an ancestor actually called Eli Mentel, which is quite funny.

Terrribletwos · 26/09/2024 19:48

Not good with the associations.

My first thought too

mumofaboynow · 26/09/2024 20:22

@TheJones again what associations? The pea scientist/genetics man?

Odd name. I thought I'd Mendel and the pea experiment.

I was thinking of the father of genetics as well

LePetitMaman · 26/09/2024 20:23

Why does it make me think of a serial killer?

rzb · 26/09/2024 20:30

Peas and genetics.

Del is OK as a short form.

I think you'd have to be prepared for the kids at school to have fun with Mendel, though.

Yea that’s the one- he got a Nobel prize. Not sure what the other association is that is dark or being referred to here either

mumofaboynow · 26/09/2024 20:59

@TheJones I held my breath as I googled. Saw he was German and the word genetics, so again, red flag. But absolutely 0 to do with what I feared some posters were getting at! Blush

Couldn't be less of a non event if not tired (the peas!)

What about just Lev, if you like Levi but not the jeans pronunciation? There was a Lev in one of my DC's nursery, his mum once told me it was Hebrew for heart.

newbeggins · 26/09/2024 21:06

I don't think the name would cause any raised eyebrows in Jewish circles. It's a nice sounding name. Others might ask him to repeat it/spell it because they've not heard it before.

Echobelly · 26/09/2024 21:13

I've always liked Gilad, both for the name and that it means 'Joyful'. Gil for short. Might be a bit too matchy-matchy with Golda though.

ReadingInTheRain583 · 26/09/2024 21:20

Gregor Mendel was Austrian.

I think people are thinking (correctly or incorrectly) about the closeness/possibility for mistaking Gregor Mendel for Josef Mengele. The former a notable geneticist. The latter having a pertinent role in the Holocaust.

The very fact that people on here are confusing the two would be enough for me to discount it as a name tbh.

There’s a show of Netflix about the Mendelez brothers (not sure I have spelt that correctly) that might be what people are referring to as it sounds a little similar and it’s quite relevant now but I associate it with high school science lessons!

MovingBird123 · 26/09/2024 22:44

I like it! It also (erroneously?) makes me think of mandel, almond.

I’m pretty sure people are associating it with Mengele. Not a good association!

WrongSortOfPoster · 27/09/2024 17:17

Levy is a surname and it's 'Leevy'.

VerityUnreasonble · 27/09/2024 18:22

I quite like Mendel (including the association with the science monk!)

Other names I quite like are Kalman, Zev (prefer this spelling to Zeev / Ze'ev), Lazar, Leib, Myer and Osher (Asher is nice too but feel like it's everywhere).

I have to admit I remembered Jozef Mengele (from history at school) as Jozef Mendel too. So my first thought was "Surely not!" Looks like I'm not the only one.
