What do you think of Mendel?

Easy to pronounce. It means 'Comfort' and I really love it

I like Levi but don't like it pronounced like the jeans. Has to be 'Lev-ee' like 'Lovey' but with an e instead of an o.

DD is called Golda Lola

Strangely, we often call her Golda Lola! But she is always introduced as Golda and is Golda at school now

Wtf

Was that for me or someone else?

Summertimer · 27/09/2024 22:38

Mendel is a character in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - book, tv drama, film

Remaker · 27/09/2024 22:38

I’m Australian and about half the population pronounces mental as Mendel. So it would be a no from me.

I think it would be difficult to escape the jeans pronunciation with Levi.

Same. It's terrible.

It is such an Ashkenazi name that most Mumsnetters are not going to appreciate it.

How about Meir (or Mayer, if you think people won't understand how to pronounce it)? Another lovely and Ashkenazi name, also with a lovely meaning.

Dilbertian · 27/09/2024 23:07

Just twigged your name, mumofaboynow - surely it has to be Reuben? 😄

Terfified · 27/09/2024 23:07

Awful

ODFOx · 27/09/2024 23:10

I came on to go 'like the geneticist?' But 'pea botherer' has made me laugh out loud and wake my snoring husband. 😁
Mendel the pea botherer.
Don't do it OP.

She can’t choose Meir when her daughter is called Golda!

This is brilliant

🤣🤣🤣
You are so right!

If you love Gregor Mendel and his peas so much why not call the baby Gregor? Golda and Gregor. 🥰

EasyComfortDishes · 28/09/2024 01:15

It’s very very Yiddishe. It’s the sort of name that’s in all our family trees from the 1800s, along with the Blumers, Liebs, Zeligs etc. To me it does not translate well into 2024, not in the community I am in anyway. If you’re living in a big community where they are wheeling out the old 1800s Hungarian family tree names then I don’t suppose it matters to much.

Not good with the associations.

Agree!!!

Really needs to be a Jewish name

Not keen on Gregor either, reminds me of Greggs!

But that's the thing with names, most of them can be picked apart without too much effort

Are you Chabad?

rzb · 28/09/2024 09:50

Lemuel / Lem?

Dilbertian · 28/09/2024 11:01

Jewish or Yiddish? Or Hebrew?

Firebird83 · 28/09/2024 21:03

I like it. It goes well with Golda.

Ah there's a Blumer in my family tree too!
I think it means Bloom or blossom or something but doesn't translate well at all.

There's also an Isidore which I always liked.
