Kai for a boy?

My favourite is Kai and DH is Noah. Well I have a lot more favourites that DH has vetoed! These are the only ones from the lists that haven’t been dismissed. I’m aware Noah is currently no. 1 I think.
And I had grown up on MN that “K” names were a no/no so I’m torn 😂

@KirstenBlest she said “in other languages”. What does it mean in English? I’ve never heard “kai” as a word in the English language

KirstenBlest · 26/09/2024 12:06

I meant as a name. Smile

It is the German for quay, and Norwegian for quay or pier, if that helps.

I live in NZ and if I met your son I would wonder why his name is Food.

My advice to the OP is to use the name if you like it. Your other choice Noah is nice but popular.
Is there anything else you like?

Zeke, Zachary, River, Jude, Harrison, Taylor

Will discourage him from gap year in NZ if we go for it 😂

My first thought on Kai is Lego Ninjago. Noah is lovely and suits all characters.

K names are chavvy?

Someone better tell Keira Knightley she's a chav.

Kenneth, Kerry, Kim are all normal names surely?

The Kerry's I've known have all been fucking feral! Absolute nutters with not a drop of class between them. Grin

I’m guessing Noah is a classic but it’s currently no. 1 name so will become very over used?

People need to really look at the stats on names.

When I named my DC it was a "top 3 name" that year. I got some stupid comments about them having to be known by their surname etc, 16 of them running up to you in the park when you shout it, all that nonsense.

There was no one else in his class or year with the same name all through primary and only one other in the whole year in his secondary.

There are SO many more names around now that even the most popular names may not be that common when spread across an entire population. IYSWIM
Unlike when I was growing up and everyone was called either Karen, Elizabeth or Pamela Grin

I like Jude or Harrison from your update OP.

I have no point of reference for this and need to google 😂

I have a Kai..he's now 16. Never met any others and don't think it became known as chavvy until Wayne Rooney named his son Kai (after my Kai was born lol).. he tells me he loves his name so did something right ✅️ 😉 however I do think the name is of its time .. 10 years later we chose a traditional name for our girl ..10 years wiser maybe 😆 I look at him now and think he looks like a Leo or Sam (red hair like a 🦁 mane..as is the style these days) .. I equate kai with a small, dark haired kid for some reason (we were adamant on the name kai though at the time ).. but I still love it 😀 ❤️

Kai means Sea/Ocean in Hawaiian, knew it might have been considered chavvy and don’t want to do that to a child 😂

I relate Kai to surfy type guys, didn't think it was a "chav" name

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 17/12/2024 18:34

I don't get the current love for Noah.
Cai is nice. But there are LOADS of Kais.

How about:

Caspian
Theo
Sidney (Sid)
Toby
Finn
Zack
Otto
Isaac
Elijah
Levi

"The Kerry's I've known have all been fucking feral! Absolute nutters with not a drop of class between them. "

I once knew an incredibly posh Kerry! 🤣

Ooo love Jude

BobbyBiscuits · 17/12/2024 18:41

It's very early 00s working class sounding. Not awful but not hugely fashionable or classic enough to be timeless. Nothing wrong with some K names for boys. Kieran is nice. I know it's a bit cheesy but I like Kingsley or Kingston. Shortened to Kings. Kian or Keane is quite nice too. I liked Keir but we can't use that any more than we can use Boris now. Lol 🤣

VisitationRights · 17/12/2024 18:46

Noah is way too overused ight now but it is a nice name, meaning peaceful or comfort in Hebrew.

I only like Kai because of SCD but wouldn’t use it for that reason!

My opinion of the name Kai has been improved a bit by Kai on Strictly who is lovely but sadly it still gives off Jeremy Kyle vibes for me

Agreed and Kai from Strictly was also named some years ago so it was probably more original then. It's very chavvy for a child nowadays. A colleague told me a couple of years ago that she had picked an very unusual name for her baby boy and she was keeping it secret until he was born so nobody could "steal it." When she finally did the big reveal his name turned out to be Kai!! I had to ooh and aah and say, how lovely it was whilst secretly thinking to myself, "You think that name is really unusual??!" She worked with children too so just can't fathom why she thought it so unusual a name.

RolaColaLola · 17/12/2024 19:10

As a couple of PPs have said, I associate the name Kai with trans-men and the non-binary. I’ve met quite a few Kai’s and they’ve all (bar one) fallen into those categories.

That aside, I just don’t like the name very much. All your other alternatives are much better, in my opinion.

WhereAreWeNow · 17/12/2024 19:45

I like Jude best out of your longer list OP
