Kai for a boy?

My favourite is Kai and DH is Noah. Well I have a lot more favourites that DH has vetoed! These are the only ones from the lists that haven’t been dismissed. I’m aware Noah is currently no. 1 I think.
And I had grown up on MN that “K” names were a no/no so I’m torn 😂

I think Kai is a wee bit chavvy. Really sorry Blush

Agreed. Sorry.

Kai means Sea/Ocean in Hawaiian, knew it might have been considered chavvy and don’t want to do that to a child 😂

I did that to my child.
My older 3 children have traditional old English names, but with my 4th I wanted something different and fell in love with the name Kai.

His start in life wasn't easy. He spent six weeks in PICU and I almost lost him twice. Therefore it was only when he had come through that that I became aware of people calling his name chavvy.

If I'm honest it really played havoc with my mental health. To the point I considered changing his name to....would you believe it.....Noah!

However, I still loved the name Kai and it just seemed to suit him so well. I couldn't imagine him being anything else.

He's almost 14 now and although he is non verbal due to his disability I am so glad I chose the name Kai for him.
It is a name he quickly responded to from an early age.

I have grown stronger with time and learnt to accept that people refer to it as chavvy. It doesn't upset me now like it used to.
I just associate the name with my Kai and his big beaming smile and determination.

He's many things but chavvy is not one of them.

Noah is a classic, Kai very chavvy (sorry!)

What a horrible snobbish thing to say. It really says more about you than the name.
I hate the expression Chav, people I have heard say it are generally pretentious or thick as mince. Sorry

Jeschara · 25/09/2024 20:48

Hannah You sound sensible and lovely. Your Kai sounds lovely. I have traditional names for my adult children, but have no time for snobbery.

Oooh hit a nerve did i? It actually says more about you that this is your response to someone sharing their own opinion about two names on a thread literally asking for opinions on those two names.

i really have no time for anyone who's only way of responding to an opinion that differs from their own is to resort to petty personal insults

Are you going to be replying to every single comment over the 4 pages using the word 'chav' or was I just the lucky one to be singled out for some special treatment @Jeschara ?

Are you Hawaiian?

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 25/09/2024 21:42

My son (38) went to school with a Kai. Lovely boy, Swedish parentage.

Loggingoverandout · 25/09/2024 21:55

@JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods nope I am not Hawaiian.mim guessing a big chunk of people choosing baby names are not choicng from their own single country/ethnicity, Should we be?

Sorry Kai is only marginally better than Jayden or Kayden.

Ketzele · 25/09/2024 23:09

I think Kai is definitely considered chavvy and I don't think that should put you off. It's a good name. I feel the same about Jayden, so shoot me now.

Noah is a lovely name. I seriously considered it when I was pg 20 years ago but thought it was too out there and he would get teased. What did I know. I ended up naming my daughter a name that was that year just in the top 50, but has been in the top 5 almost ever since. My own name was vanishingly rare when I was young but is now pretty popular, especially for drag queens and dogs.

Go for what you love.

KirstenBlest · 25/09/2024 23:31

Exactly. I think they are quite nice, but the association is there.

A friend's daughter is well-off in her own right, as is her DH, and they gave their baby a name that I did think 'Oh dear!' about. DF didn't seem too thrilled about the name, but her DD always was a bit of a rebel, and DF loves being a grandmother.

The grandchild's name would definitely be rated 'chav' on here. Grin

Sel saying someones name choice is chavy is rude and disrespectful. It's personal choice, if you don't like it fine, but no need to be so nasty.
I have chosen a name for my son that is traditional, my daughter name is less common but not to out there. I do not particularly like the name Kai, but I can say this without resorting to that dreadful word chav.

It's not rude and disrespectful to offer a personal opinion to someone asking for opinions just because that opinion might not be favourable or the same as your own.

What is rude and disrespectful is resorting to passive aggressive personal insults towards other posters you know nothing about to try and get your point across.

In my opinion the name Kai is chavvy., i can't think of any better word to describe it. That's an opinion that has been shared by others on this same thread and that word has even been mentioned by the OP herself. It's also not a name choice yet, the OP has asked for opinions on it before the baby has even been born let alone named.

You have a problem with the word chav/chavvy and that's OK, that's your own personal opinion and thoughts.
I don't agree with you.

Sevilletiles · 26/09/2024 04:42

The term chav is a derogatory term and when the kids in school use it we ask them not to because it’s a rude, derogatory and offensive word.
im shocked grown adults think it’s ok to use this term.

Sevilletiles · 26/09/2024 04:42

Kai is lovely

Dear me, it must be a tough world to live in if people using the word 'chav' is a shock to you

I work in a secondary school and the other day saw a kid call the Headteacher a cunt to his face.
With respect, you've been pretty sheltered.
And we're all grown adults here, so not in need of the language police.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 26/09/2024 08:12

There’s quite a difference between names like Kit/Kate and Kai IMO. I wouldn’t. There are so many lovely names to pick from. Noah is lovely. Was on Our short list.

KirstenBlest · 26/09/2024 10:43

I think it might be the K, because I like Guy. Jai, Cai and Dai don't strike me as tacky but I'd think that there was some connection with India or Wales.

If you dislike the word 'chav', feel free to suggest an alternative. I've used 'unaspirational' or 'downmarket' before but neither were well-received.

Clearinguptheclutter · 26/09/2024 10:44

Sorry no keen on Kai

Noah is super popular but still a great name

StolenChanel · 26/09/2024 10:46

LeafHunter · 23/09/2024 10:37

There are many names better than Kai. Might be worth googling what Kai means in other languages too.

Out of curiosity, I just googled it and this came up:

Chinese: Kai is used as a name to mean 'victory' Germanic languages: Kai means keeper of the keys to earth. Hawaiian: Kai means 'sea or ocean' Japanese: Kai means 'ocean' and 'shell', but also 'restoration' and 'recovery' Navajo: Kai means willow tree, whose spiritual properties include protection and healing.

These all sound very positive to me. What language does it mean something negative in?

Jeschara · 26/09/2024 10:53

JMSA it is not a race to the bottom, the word Cunt does not shock me. It does not make the word Chav any more acceptable though, trust me I have not lived a sheltered life either.

Jeschara · 26/09/2024 10:58

My advice to the OP is to use the name if you like it. Your other choice Noah is nice but popular.
Is there anything else you like?

KirstenBlest · 26/09/2024 11:11

@StolenChanel , English?

Noah has negative associations for me. It's nice enough and I know some well-behaved Noahs with intelligent, pleasant, MC parents, but it's the little yobbo Noah that colours my view. I also hear it as 'No'.
Sorry.

@Jeschara .hear, hear.
