Thought on Aliena

MistyF · 17/09/2024 10:49

As in variation on Alyona, and because of charcter in Shakespeare, not because aliens.
I would pronounce it A-lee-en-a. I dont mind slight variation in pronunciation, but do care that middle two syllables are pronounced lee-en.

Do you think Aliena is usable? I like Celia, as well, but not as Aliena.

Sadly, no. It will be mispronounced into something horrible, and the alien thing will be tagged on for good measure.

Similarly, I always really liked the name Candida but it's unthinkable.

Aileen is a pretty name as is Alanna.

sel2223 · 18/09/2024 11:43

I haven't read the other replies, sorry, but all I can see is 'Alien' which kids will have a field day with.
I also can't see any other obvious pronunciation aside from 'Alien-ah' so, if it's not supposed to be that, I think you'll be condemning your little one to a lifetime of people butchering her name

DeCaray · 18/09/2024 12:17

Awful.

Elena is a beautiful name.

WaltzingWaters · 18/09/2024 12:20

The name, I like. The spelling is a no way.

DickEmery · 17/09/2024 11:35

I prefer Martiana tbh

That’s just silly.

I love the name Aliena. If I have a girl in the future it’d go really well with my little boy’s name, Predata.

This.

God no!

Peridot1 · 18/09/2024 12:41

What about Eliana? Very similar sounding and a very pretty name without the Alien connotation.

MelodyMalone · 18/09/2024 12:44

First thing you see there is Alien.

Alena? Alyena?

Just one more question

would Alyena be better spelling? I need also to say I meant Ah-lee-eh-na not really Alien-a or A-lee-en-a

I think with Alyena you'd get "all-yenner" or "al-yeena" pronunciations.

Allienna? Still looks quite alien-adjacent.

Yes I like this

MelodyMalone · 18/09/2024 13:02

Aliyena? Looks a bit made up but I think is the most phonetic version for what you want.

I love that name!

Elana is nice too for a slightly simpler version.

sel2223 · 18/09/2024 13:11

Eliana is beautiful!

YellowAsteroid · 18/09/2024 13:30

Well, if you want your DC to be bullied for the whole of school, and have people suppress a snigger or a raised eyebrow when they see her name written down ...

Edited

Do you want a child to spend her whole life going "its pronounced" and "Its spelt..."?

Seriously. Brains need to return to a state of non-mush.

Its not useable unless you are cruel.

Faldodiddledee · 18/09/2024 14:12

I would still be saying 'a' as in 'apple' rather than' 'ahhh' for the other version.

I chose a name that can be said multiple ways for my dd, she quite likes it and it's not that difficult but the start of it is always the same and I think that's what helps. If you don't know how to say the starting letter, it will be butchered more times than not. That said, people do have names which need learning.

Dinosaurlover · 18/09/2024 14:17

Go for it, if you hate your kid...

Poppalina37 · 18/09/2024 15:25

No just no!

Not even going to write my name! But wtf was my father thinking!

Kids are cruel!!

Trauma!

They will definitely be called Alien 👽

Jasperj · 18/09/2024 18:47

Sorry OP but I just saw Alien first. Which threw me when thinking of how to pronounce it. If people saw Allie or -enna, it’d help it be pronounced as you want as the first is a well-known girl’s name and we’re familiar with -enna from Sienna and Jenna.

Allienna? I can still see Alien though.

Alyena? (I pronounce ‘ena’ though as ‘eena’ as in Lena or ‘ayna’ as in Helena.)

Alyenna? That’d be my choice I think.

MelodyMalone · 18/09/2024 19:11

Alienna or Aliyenna are the closest to the sound you want, I think. But the first is too alien looking and the second looks very made up.

No don’t do that to your child please

nepetaracemosa · 18/09/2024 20:41

Allyenna maybe?
