Thought on Aliena

As in variation on Alyona, and because of charcter in Shakespeare, not because aliens.
I would pronounce it A-lee-en-a. I dont mind slight variation in pronunciation, but do care that middle two syllables are pronounced lee-en.

Do you think Aliena is usable? I like Celia, as well, but not as Aliena.

Just finished listening to an audiobook with a main character Aliena. It was pronounced there as “ally-ay-nah” “ally-eh-nah”. (My two attempts to write it phonetically). It’s a nice name, and because I’ve heard it pronounced that way I wouldn’t think “alien-ah”.

Yeah, I pronounce it very similar to this

Aliena? Honestly awful.

Alina is lovely, please don’t lumber your child with an easily ridiculed name so you can have an unusual spelling.

eggandonion · 17/09/2024 11:26

Aniela is a real name?

NeverHadHaveHas · 17/09/2024 11:31

I have a friend called Aleina and she is forever being called Alien or Eileen. Neither is great.

JeremiahBullfrog · 17/09/2024 11:32

It has the double misfortune of being both a name nobody has heard of and resembling a word with some less than positive connotations. About as bad as a name can get.

DickEmery · 17/09/2024 11:35

I prefer Martiana tbh

Well its obviously the female version of Alien, no idea why people are having an issue with that

Andoutcomethewolves · 17/09/2024 11:37

As others have said I think the 'alien' spelling will cause her problems. I like the pronunciation though - I'd probably spell it Alyena (or possibly even Alliena as that doesn't include 'alien' as the entire first part of the name!)

Yes exactly. Aliens can be male, female or non-binary. It's all good.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 17/09/2024 11:44

It looks like Alien-a to me too. I would work out which sound you like - the Ali or Enna and find another name. If you still want the name, I’d go for another spelling Alyena (admittedly lots of people might say Al-yena ) Alliyena, Allienna (I still see Alien) etc

Sandysandwich · 17/09/2024 11:48

No it just looks like Alien.
Your pronunciation is nice but there are more logical ways of spelling it that don't look silly written down.

Feels like it could be a name from Monster High, Ghoulia, Draculara, Aliena, Frankie Stein etc.

DiscoBeat · 17/09/2024 11:48

Nope, it's just Alien with an a at the end!

DiscoBeat · 17/09/2024 11:49

We hy not Alannah? So similar and hard to get wrong

Waterboatlass · 17/09/2024 11:50

If you like the play go with Celia or Rosalind. Or Phoebe. She's not going to thank you for calling her Aliena.

No idea at all!

I actually do prefer this!

DickEmery · 17/09/2024 14:19

Sounds a bit Hungarian I think.

Rory17384949 · 17/09/2024 14:53

Please don't, they are going to be called Alien!
Celia is much better

Or just go for Alyona?

JC03745 · 17/09/2024 20:50

I too read it as Alien-A.

Ilona
Lena
Aleena

Moreteaandchocolate · 17/09/2024 20:53

I really like how it sounds, it’s just a shame about the spelling looking like Alien. Is there another spelling you could use? The sound Ally- EH- nuh is very pretty if you can get round the alien association with another spelling!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 17/09/2024 22:54

The sound of Aliena is beautiful, and it’s a lovely, medieval name afaik (I’ve only heard it as “Ah- Lee- en- ah” from a tv adaptation Pillars of the Earth).

But realistically most people won’t know that and are going to say it with a long A when they see it written down (like Alien with an A on the end) -so I don’t think it’s worth the potential teasing.

Since she would probably have to spell such a rare name anyway, you could try spelling it phonetically as Allyena to mitigate teasing - but it doesn’t look as pretty and may still get mispronounced.

soundsys · 17/09/2024 22:56

Yeah I think most people will say alien-ah? With a somewhat incredulous look.

Sorry OP!

RedToothBrush · 17/09/2024 22:58

Is she a green bug-eye monster or from Mars?

(Yes its that bad)
