I don't like the name Dustin, I just think of dustbin.

There aren't too many names that bother me, even if I don't care for them. I have always really hated Phoebe though. Only ever met one, and I'm not even sure I spoke to them during that event, but the name just sounds weird to me.

Wow some lovely names here which noone has ever said IRL they hate - mine and my children's.
However I really dislike the name Dylan. Ugh.

Dylan is a lovely name! No one irl has ever said they hate that to me about my lovely relative.
Your comment tickled me.

Quinton, Quintin, maeve, any typical boy name used on a girl eg billy or Charlie.

Arlo just makes me think of the cute dinosaur from the film so no idea why that's so popular

Hyphenated names, like Lily-Rose and Lily-Rae. It is so easy to get confused and say a rose instead of a rae etc. The names are pretty but the hyphen is an issue for me. It's even more confusing when paired with a double-barrelled surname.

Also Chardonnay, Red and Blue

@Hotlepot

I know a Thea, and i can indeed confirm that she's called 'Fea' by her Mum.

I know it’s Nordic but it just sounds wrong

Anything like Teddie, Archie, Billie, Tommie, where the parents think they are naming a baby rather than, hopefully, someone who will be lumbered with their baby name for 80+ years.

Depends what's on the birth certificate if it's Edward,.Archibald (not the best sounding name admittedly haha), William and Thomas. Then they can just switch from the babyish version to the grown up version as they age.

Honestly it wouldn't offend me if my kid's names were on this thread. Although they aren't so far. We all like and dislike different things and that's fine.

What annoys me is when names don't "go" together.
Like you've Tommy,Billy,John and then you've Brooklyn or Arlo.
Just ,why?.

Why do names need to go together? I think that's weird

I bet if the OP had started a ‘what names do you love?’ thread she’d have got the same names, just by different posters.

I heard of a new baby named Navy recently. Yes, really. 🙄

ArnieandBob · 04/10/2024 23:40

Why is Ottilie so hated?
My DC are late teens and I'm now menopausal so no chance of any more DC but I always thought if I ever had another girl Ottilie would have been on my short-list but it's obvious from this thread that it's not liked at all on MN.

Because it's ubiquitous amongst a certain type of try hard person

MadonnaLouiseVeronicaCiccone · 05/10/2024 09:34

@ArnieandBob and most of them pronounce it incorrectly!!!

I think it might be seen as a bit pretentious, but also its pronunciation is butchered by most British people. It's a German name and is pronounced O-teal-ya, yet British people often pronounce it like Ot-till-ee or Ot-ter-lee, or drop the t entirely and it sounds like Od-der-lee.

I actually like a lot of the aforementioned names though! Sarah is lovely and I really like Nevaeh- I know people get hung up on it being a bit naff for the whole ‘it’sheavenspeltbackwards’ but I think it’s very soft and pretty-sounding.

I also can’t imagine a baby Ian (and similar generation names) but I think that’s just because we are so used to associating those names with 50-year-old men rather than the actual name.

How do you pronounce that? I always think it looks like 'Never' but surely not?

Oh come on it can be weird. In fact I had a friend that did it and its so uncomfortable jarring even though shes a nice person and I never comment on her kids name in person.

Names changed for example but essentially: Ellie-May, Elsa, Kate, Eldon, Bella... all have 'el' in except one, the one right in the middle too. I don't even think she is aware somehow (maybe she was of the E start thing but not the 'el' in every name bar one). I guess we know her favorite sound though.

Its not even a comment on the names its just a very strange break of pattern and breaks in patterns by their design make people uncomfortable (like 1 tile out of place or 1 blue sweet in a jar or pink sweets etc... it simply draws awkward attention).

They say it Nuh-vey-uh.

I personally don't find it pretty it reminds me of brands like Nivea and Aviva etc... sounds like it should be trying to sell you something.

Also surely the reverse of Heaven is Hell?
