I don't like the name Dustin, I just think of dustbin.

Princess Diana's sisters were Sarah and Jane @HighlandCow78 and @SiobhanSharpe

Eileen (not that anyone's likely to use it for a baby any time soon) - I can only picture a very cross looking skinny old woman who shouts at people.
I know a young Eileen it's very jarring when you first meet her, you're expecting a much older woman.

it is for a dog/other pet but
Rover, Fido and Trixie.

they all sound juvenile to my shallow mind and tiny ears

And?

deeahgwitch · 04/09/2024 15:42

Just an observation @HighlandCow78 as you and @SiobhanSharpe had said they were both such boring names.
I think they are fine names

SirChenjins · 04/09/2024 15:47

Loads, but Sonny and Frankie seem to crop up on MN as great names - both East End London wide boys names and not cool in the slightest.

Being sister to a princess, or anyone in the public eye doesn’t mean that your name isn’t boring though?

You would be angry too after having people sing Come On Eileen at you for 32 years.

Lots of people not liking the name Ottilie…? I have never heard it before but I LOVE it! 🤷‍♀️

I’ve always thought it so interesting that the parents went with the infinitely more unusual Diana, after choosing the completely average Sarah and Jane for their older daughters.

See I find Diana and Sarah boring, dated and common but Jane timeless and refreshing.

I have personally never met a Jane in real life but a lot of strong independent take no shit badass women through history where seemingly called Jane so it seem a good strong name to me. It's all just personal perspective.

deeahgwitch · 04/09/2024 18:58

No not at all @HighlandCow78

Personally I think they are nice inoffensive names. Like Laura.

I’m not personally a huge fan of the name Diana, but objectively it’s a much more unusual name, with a very different background, to the other two.

It's odd that despite Princess Diana's popularity there doesn't appear to have been an upsurge in the use of the name Diana, particularly in the aftermath of her death when there was a huge outpouring of grief.

There was a jazz singer I remember called Ottilie Patterson. Only one I've heard of.

I really like Diana because of the Roman mythology, but was put off by possibly being mistaken for a royalty fan.

BinkyBeaufort · 04/09/2024 19:53

Louise. I've never met one I liked. For some reason they've all been sharp-tongued, vindictive and occasionally just plain nasty.
Apologies to any lovely Louises.

I know a Laura who is so wonderful, kind and bright that i think the name is due a revival.

Louisa is much nicer.

Dmsandfloatydress · 04/09/2024 19:56

Reily is a name that makes my skin crawl along with other ridiculous surname names. Who the hell calls their kid after an occupation? Mason, Tanner, Tyler. Bloody awful!

SnowdropCrocus · 04/09/2024 19:59

The shortening of Diana to Di/Die might put people off.

Tartantotty · 04/09/2024 20:06

Any name used by a reality star or influencer. Or any double-barrelled first names like Mary-Lee, Ellie-May etc. I call them cheap crap names. On the other hand, I dislike pretentious names like India, Charlotte, Miles, Amelie, Tristan.

MaidOfSteel · 04/09/2024 20:33

I really don't like this trend from America, using surnames as first names. Doubly so for girls.

It may have just been where I lived at the time, but there were so many Laura’s at my school! I think more likely to be the name of women naming babies, than being a baby’s name, at the moment.

Pallisers · 04/09/2024 21:23

I don't like Wren, Mabel, and Louise/Louisa
