I don't like the name Dustin, I just think of dustbin.
What name do you really dislike?

Wow some lovely names here which noone has ever said IRL they hate - mine and my children's.
However I really dislike the name Dylan. Ugh.

It is! In a novel I read when I was younger I'm sure a character said "Emma is a fat girl's name" - awful, but I can't get it out of my head.

I always think of Jane Austen's novel Emma.

She was beautiful, bright and accomplished (but a little too arrogant).

To me Emma is an elegant name but also soft.

Seems one person's elegant is another's boring.

I think Emma will make a big comeback along with Jane and Anne. (A Brontë inspired revival!)

Simple elegance as a palate cleanser from all the cute frilliness.

Ellie, Millie, Teddy and Jackie. Any other spellings of those names.
As pp has said Ellie and millie end up as elleh and milleh. Teddy is far too twee but really popular and I have never once met a nice Jackie so it's really coloured the name for me.

Nobody has ever called me "Elleh" as my name is Ellie (Ell-ee) I'm confused by your statement 😂

Arlo is a peeve of mine
Callum makes me feel sick
Jodie reminds me of brown

Gardennotebook · 30/08/2024 21:40

No Claire is a fat girls name and yes I am fat. 🤣

Gardennotebook · 30/08/2024 21:40

Oh I like Jodie.

SlashBeef · 30/08/2024 21:42

Rebecca/Becca/Becky. Loathe entirely.

LePetitMaman · 30/08/2024 21:47

Grace. Dull thud of a name.

Ottilie, didn't mind so much until it got so overused, and I've never met one where the mother isn't a complete twat.

Interestingly with the "Carol" comments up thread, I knew two awful ones, but now know one who's the nicest person you could ever meet.

Anna. That's the one though. Yet to meet one who isn't an utter c*nt.

What a horrible thread.

I dislike loads of names, but as I know full well that hundreds of Mumsnetters will have those names themselves, or will have chosen them for their children, or will love someone with those names, I'm not about to say what they are.

This.

SallyWD · 30/08/2024 21:58

I don't hate it, but everyone seems to love the name Sophie, but I just find it a bit wet and dull.
I also don't like giving infantile nicknames as the name on the birth certificate. For example, I dislike boys being called Teddy or Albie, although I don't mind if their full names are Edward, Albert etc.
I don't really like cutesie names like Maisie or Evie or Gracie or Betsy.
Yes, I know I sound like a grinch!

Any name ending in ine, such as Maxine, Francine

My RL name has only been mentioned once, and I think it's bloody awful! Grin

Also a lot of names ending in ette Lynette, Paulette, Bernadette and the worst of all - Odette

AdviceNeeded2024 · 30/08/2024 16:48

Plus silly posh names like Araminta, Atticus, Peregrine and Olympia.

😂😂 don’t think I’ve ever come across one of these as a name of a person! Isn’t a peregrine a falcon?? They are slightly strange for human names!

I know people with all those names, and yes, they are pretty bad.

Number 1 that makes me just eeek, is Arlo

ProvincialLady2024 · 30/08/2024 22:26

Matchy sibling names.

Chardonnay, Chanel, Skye, Savannah, Havana, Paris, Kayden, Jayden, Rueben, Jesse, Mikey.

ViolaPlains · 30/08/2024 22:32

This thread would be better if people said what names they hated but also included the names they had chosen for their own little darlings.

4FoxxSake · 30/08/2024 22:33

Anything ending eigh... Kayleigh, Everleigh Charleigh etc
Ridiculous spelling of names, to be original.. yawn. Especially involving EIGH.
Double barrelled names.

Redbiro · 30/08/2024 22:41

Strokethefurrywall · 30/08/2024 18:09

Mingus (makes me think minge)
Mungo (makes me think mung beans)
Fergus (makes me think fungus)
Clive (sounds smarmy to me)
Maude (makes me think maudlin)
Mildred (makes me think mildew)
Ethel (didn't like Ethel Hallow in The Worst Witch)
Ottilie (makes me think otter)
Ptolemy (twat)
Clementine (makes me think phlegm)

There are plenty of names that are perfectly lovely but I just wouldn't use them, doesn't mean I hate them though. The ones above though... I just can't get past what I think of when I hear them.

I get your rationale on all except Ottilie. What’s your beef with otters? They’re unbelievably adorable. Not least when they’re just floating along holding hands with their otter love 🫶🫶🫶

I don’t disagree that it’s a silly name. But mate, you need to come up with a better justification 😅

The irony being that you've spelt Niamh wrong! 😂

That is exactly why it is on my list 😂

Raininginparadise2 · 30/08/2024 22:49

Unique names and/or unique spellings- too chav and/or too try hard.
American names that sound more like surnames.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 30/08/2024 23:07

Any surname being used as a first name ie Bailey, Harrison, Kennedy.

Oh I totally get that you find it hard to remember how it's spelt, I just found it funny how you said names that don't sound like how they're spelt, then proceeded to spell it wrong. I should hope nobody ever pronounces it Nim-ah to sound how it looks when spelt that way! 😂

Funnily enough, I love Niamh but hate the spelling Neve (or Neeve). Way to butcher a beautiful name.
