Xanadu?

Will people have trouble spelling this in the UK?

I've been thinking of it for a boy but not sure if people will endlessly try and spell it as 'Zanadoo'

Well, or Coleridge! 😀

Jeff is listed as the sole song writer on the credits for the film one. Don't know about the Legend of Xanadu by Dave Dee, Dozy etc. That's a little before my time.

Jeff says it's his worst song too.

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round;
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.

But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e’er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon-lover!
And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
A mighty fountain momently was forced:
Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst
Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher’s flail:
And mid these dancing rocks at once and ever
It flung up momently the sacred river.
Five miles meandering with a mazy motion
Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,
Then reached the caverns measureless to man,
And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean;
And ’mid this tumult Kubla heard from far
Ancestral voices prophesying war!
The shadow of the dome of pleasure
Floated midway on the waves;
Where was heard the mingled measure
From the fountain and the caves.
It was a miracle of rare device,
A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!

A damsel with a dulcimer
In a vision once I saw:
It was an Abyssinian maid
And on her dulcimer she played,
Singing of Mount Abora.
Could I revive within me
Her symphony and song,
To such a deep delight ’twould win me,
That with music loud and long,
I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.

.... and then a person arrived on business from Porlock and woke Coleridge from his opium dream, or we'd have got a lot more!

David Bowie did just fine with an ordinary name. It wasn't the name that marked him out. And his son changed his own 'out there' name to something more sensible.

He uses Jones, which was Bowie's original name, doesn't he? Can't get much more ordinary than that!

And first name Duncan rather than Zowie. I think Duncan was his middle name.

Ironic that Jeff says that when it was ELO's only UK number 1 hit!

I'm old enough to be only able to associate it with Dave Dee, Donzy, Beaky, Mick, and Tich's legendary song.

Yes, immediately makes me think of whips cracking.

Esta es la legenda de Xanadu

Add me to the list. Always loved the whip cracking bit.

One of our three dc has a more unusual name - and now as a teenager occasionally gets quite angry with us for not choosing something more usual (like their siblings). If I could go back, I would definitely choose something more usual, along the same lines as the other two.

Most Mumsnettian baby name I have ever seen in my life. And I've seen some monstrosities 😂🤣🤣

Oliver, Sophie and Balonz? I see his point.

JimNast · 13/06/2024 15:48

@taxguru number 1 doesn't mean it was a good song. It was catchy and it had the lovely Olivia N-J singing.

I know right? Loads of number 1 albums, and for other people, and in other countries, but it really eluded him in the UK. Lots of number 2's (fnarr) but just couldn't quite get to that top spot.

Also the UK charts are a weird place. Wasn't Vienna kept off the top spot by Shaddap You Face? The injustice.

ELO did the whole soundtrack if memory serves. Jeff is a true musical genius IMHO. I watched a documentary about him and part of it was in his studio which was wall to wall gold discs that he'd either written or produced.
