Will people have trouble spelling this in the UK?

I've been thinking of it for a boy but not sure if people will endlessly try and spell it as 'Zanadoo'

The bit where you dismiss Coleridge

Still can't work out if you are or not but now leaning towards you genuinely didn't know what this meant.

She hasn't dismissed Coleridge. As mentioned many times on the thread now, there are many mentions of Xanadu in popular culture:
Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
This one
Xanadu the film
Xanadu the no.1 song by Olivia Newton-John (written by Jeff Lynne), from the film

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich - The Legend Of Xanadu - HQ

"The Legend of Xanadu" is a single by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich that reached number one in the UK Singles Chart in 1968, and was the group's biggest...

I remember a Radio 1 DJ mispronouncing it: Ex ann ay doo.

The song was by Olivia Newton-John, not Abba.

It's also pretty conspicuous at the start of Welcome to the Pleasuredrome by FGTH

But a lot of people know it from the poem, which crops up regularly for GCSE (and which means people know how to spell it)

I don't think it works terribly well as a human name though (place names generally don't)

Call him Pleasuredome

I'm old enough to be only able to associate it with Dave Dee, Donzy, Beaky, Mick, and Tich's legendary song.

I only know this reference from a Red Dwarf episode.

She referred to the solo credit being Jeff Lynne indicating she thought the other poster thought Coleridge wrote it 🤣

Maybe the unesco list could provide more inspiration for this board?

Xanadu, du, du,
Stately pleasure dome decree
Xanadu, du, du,
Sacred river sunless sea.
Fertile ground, bordered round
many an incense bearing tree.
Everybody dance to the dulcimer lady!

Sorry, couldn’t resist sharing this. Not original but it amuses me!

Nope. Go back and read what she said again.

Trying to work out if this was serious or taking the piss.

Why?

I expect you're talking about the poet, Samuel Coleridge, but he definitely didn’t write the song 😂

PyongyangKipperbang · 13/06/2024 22:24

FYI

Knowing that Coleridge wrote a poem with the same name, doesnt make you better or more well read than those who immediately associate the name with a song. Frankly all of us of a certain age grew up being forced to study the former and listening to the latter.

Which one are we more likely to remember affectionately when listening to certain words?

My father would, if asked "Who wrote Romeo and Juliet?", always answer "Mark Knopfler". He is dyslexic and written off as either simple or lazy at school in the 50's. So his knowledge of Shakespeare is limited but his knowledge of music is extensive.

JimNast · 13/06/2024 22:29

@PyongyangKipperbang , did Mark Knopfler write all the Shakespeare plays?

Quite so. It's why I ignored the reference in my earlier post. It led to some sneering that I wasn't as well educated, however I didn't think it was relevant when we were clearly taking about the songs.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g - thank you for realising 👍

Hmm, didn't know it was so awful! I heard someone called this in playgroup a while back and liked it a lot

My other DC have names very classic and timeless. I thought this sort of name spiced things up a little!

Maybe not then. Back to the drawing board

This has tickled me.

‘Let me introduce you to my children…George, Harry, Emily and Xanadu.’

Gowlett · 13/06/2024 23:31

I actually think it’s quite a cool name!

This. Just don't. PLEASE.
