Xanadu?

Will people have trouble spelling this in the UK?

I've been thinking of it for a boy but not sure if people will endlessly try and spell it as 'Zanadoo'

Poor kid.

Chewbecca · 13/06/2024 12:33

How about Xavier?

Blackcats7 · 13/06/2024 12:34

Surely this is a joke?
Olivia Newton-John anyone?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/06/2024 12:36

I'm old enough to be only able to associate it with Dave Dee, Donzy, Beaky, Mick, and Tich's legendary song.

MaryBeardsShoes · 13/06/2024 12:38

Jesus Christ 😂 I’ve heard it all.

marciaa · 13/06/2024 12:39

Anyone remember the perfume?

miniaturepixieonacid · 13/06/2024 13:56

Is it a name? I know of it as an ancient city and a musical but never heard of it as a name. It's got a cool and quirky sound to it and modern kids might not think anything of it but it's a risk, tbh. I think I'd go with an established name.

Eta
Unless you do actually have Mongolian heritage? I've just googled it and it is a name. But it's meaning is 'Mongolian City' so probably akin to a European family using Milan, Paris or London which definitely happens, I've taught children with all three names. I'd say Xanadu is probably not for a White British child really though.

Yes, immediately makes me think of whips cracking.

Esta es la legenda de Xanadu

Was just about to say the same. Written by the fabulous Jeff Lynne.

Well, or Coleridge! 😀

AdaColeman · 13/06/2024 14:15

Zabadak would be a much better choice @heyitisthegirls !

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round;
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.

But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e’er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon-lover!
And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
A mighty fountain momently was forced:
Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst
Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher’s flail:
And mid these dancing rocks at once and ever
It flung up momently the sacred river.
Five miles meandering with a mazy motion
Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,
Then reached the caverns measureless to man,
And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean;
And ’mid this tumult Kubla heard from far
Ancestral voices prophesying war!
The shadow of the dome of pleasure
Floated midway on the waves;
Where was heard the mingled measure
From the fountain and the caves.
It was a miracle of rare device,
A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!

A damsel with a dulcimer
In a vision once I saw:
It was an Abyssinian maid
And on her dulcimer she played,
Singing of Mount Abora.
Could I revive within me
Her symphony and song,
To such a deep delight ’twould win me,
That with music loud and long,
I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.

God I love Xanadu! Brilliant soundtrack!

neilyoungismyhero · 13/06/2024 14:22

Poor little bugger

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 13/06/2024 14:30

Guess I'm the only one who first thought of Rush!

sawnotseen · 13/06/2024 14:48

My first 7 inch single as a nine year old!
RIP Olivia.
Just nooooo for a name. It isn't a name, it's a fictional place!

Xanadont

Brilliant!

This.

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 13/06/2024 15:11

That really isn’t a good name.

coldcallerbaiter · 13/06/2024 15:12

Pure garbage

RoseUnder · 13/06/2024 15:13

Xanadu could be great though.

It all depends on the child's personality.

They might be the next David Bowie or something.

Katiesaidthat · 13/06/2024 11:49

Uuuuhm, is it after the Abba song? I have seen disco bars and strip clubs with that name. It is a slightly weird choice?

Olivia Newton John

Sorry, just realised you’ve been told this 1000 times already.

Echobelly · 13/06/2024 15:14

I'd say go for Xan or Xander for a boy - people will be more familiar with it and won't be potentially cringey.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 13/06/2024 15:17

My other DC have names very classic and timeless. I thought this sort of name spiced things up a little!

Alexander is classic and timeless, and you could use Xander as a shortening.

David Bowie did just fine with an ordinary name. It wasn't the name that marked him out. And his son changed his own 'out there' name to something more sensible. Still successful though.

He uses Jones, which was Bowie's original name, doesn't he? Can't get much more ordinary than that!
