We are expecting a little girl and have whittled down a shortlist.

One of the names is Lucia.

We live in Scotland and wondered how would you pronounce this as keen to know of it would be mispronounced often?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Loo-Chia- Unless the parents/child said it was pronounced otherwise.

theteddybear · 08/06/2024 23:08

I also live in Scotland. I've known a few with this name and mainly its lu-chia (1 I know is of Italian heritage but the others aren't). Recently at my 4yr olds nursery a girl started that pronounced Lu-seea and that's first I've heard it that way.

Greengrapeofhome · 08/06/2024 23:09

The only one I know says it loo see ah

Morwenscapacioussleeves · 08/06/2024 23:16

Scottish & would say Loo chia
but I would remember if corrected 😃

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 08/06/2024 23:27

Loo-Chee-ah

Am also in Scotland

Hohofortherobbers · 08/06/2024 23:36

The one I know is Loo sha

Hermittrismegistus · 08/06/2024 23:37

I'd pronounce it Loosha

RitaIncognita · 08/06/2024 23:42

purpleme12 · 08/06/2024 22:33

Loo-see-a

Only pronunciation I know unless you're Italian

I agree. No "chee" unless Italian.

WigglyVonWaggly · 08/06/2024 23:46

Lucy-er or Loo-see-a. I’ve heard both.

DiscoBeat · 08/06/2024 23:49

Luseeya is how I've always read it but I've never met one

MolkosTeenageAngst · 08/06/2024 23:51

Loo-chee-yuh would be my go-to pronunciation (eg: if it was a character in a book) but I have also heard it said Loose-ee-yuh so if it was someone in real life i wouldn’t be surprised to hear them use either version.

itspreposterous · 08/06/2024 23:56

Loo see ahh

QueenDramaLlama · 08/06/2024 23:58

Lou-she-ah but with less emphasis on the sh sound.

WhatASurprisee · 09/06/2024 00:01

Lu sha, the others sound odd to me

JellyBeanFactory · 09/06/2024 00:39

Loosha

Pemba · 09/06/2024 00:55

I THINK that the traditional English pronunciation is Loo-sha, like the Caribbean island, that seems to be less popular now.

Loo-see-a is Spanish (and also Loo-thee-a, depending on Spanish region.)

Loo-chee-a is Italian.

I have an idea that in some countries it's Loot-see-a or Loot-zee-a, not sure exactly where.

Lucy-a I think is a mistake?

Wow, pretty name but it's a minefield.
Lucy would be so much easier!

mathanxiety · 09/06/2024 01:27

Loo-SEE-ah.

One of my DDs has a friend who is Loo-THEE-ah (Spanish pr).

stressedespresso · 09/06/2024 01:33

Northern Irish here! I would pronounce it as ‘loo-chee-ah’, in keeping with the 2 young Lucias that we know

howonearthdoesithappen · 09/06/2024 02:14

Loo see er, didn't consider the ch sound at all

Mardyybum · 09/06/2024 02:25

I know of one person with this name and she pronounces it Loo-sha. She is Italian.

FlumpInSlump · 09/06/2024 02:37

Lou-sea-ah

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 09/06/2024 02:41

Loo-chee-ah

nocoolnamesleft · 09/06/2024 03:12

My first thought would be Loo SEE a, then I'd wonder if it was meant to be LOO see a, then I'd become concerned it was actually meant to be Loo CHEE a, and I'd basically panic, and try very hard not to say the name at all.

liveforsummer · 09/06/2024 03:19

I'd wait for guidance or ask. No definite way to pronounce

octoberfarm · 09/06/2024 04:30

I would pronounce it Loo-see-a. It's pretty :)
