We are expecting a little girl and have whittled down a shortlist.

One of the names is Lucia.

We live in Scotland and wondered how would you pronounce this as keen to know of it would be mispronounced often?

Australian here, my cousin Lucia is loo-sea-a.

StopStartStop · 09/06/2024 05:52

Loo-chee-ah and it sounds like a lavatory cleaner.

ApolloandDaphne · 09/06/2024 06:20

I'm Scottish and would pronounce it Loo-see-yah.

Kira4 · 09/06/2024 06:26

Spanish is Lu-see-a and Italian is Lu-chee-a. I live in Spain and it’s quite a common name here.

Maddy70 · 09/06/2024 06:28

Loo che a

spiderplantmum · 09/06/2024 06:36

I immediately thought loo-see-ah but I see I was most likely wrong!

whiteroseredrose · 09/06/2024 06:59

I'd probably ask!

It could reasonably be Loo-sha like the island Saint Lucia, Loo-chee-ah like a song Santa Lucia we learned at school or Lucy-ah.

So if I saw it written down and the person was in front of me I'd ask. Otherwise I'd guess at Lucy-ah.

ruralwanderer · 09/06/2024 07:01

Lou-see-a

BitOutOfPractice · 09/06/2024 07:02

Loo-chia.

I think it’s lovely! Congratulations!

Itsraininman · 09/06/2024 07:06

Oh actually the Batman character was Alicia not Lucia. But pronounced Aleesha

I THINK that the traditional English pronunciation is Loo-sha, like the Caribbean island, that seems to be less popular now.

Loo-see-a is Spanish (and also Loo-thee-a, depending on Spanish region.)

Loo-chee-a is Italian.

I have an idea that in some countries it's Loot-see-a or Loot-zee-a, not sure exactly where.

Lucy-a I think is a mistake?

Wow, pretty name but it's a minefield.
Lucy would be so much easier!

Nope, not a mistake. I honestly, in the anglophone world would pronounce it Lucy-a unless there was a foreign connection which would lead me to pronounce it otherwise, or if told otherwise.
There are so many names which are used or originate from other countries but it wouldn't occur to me to put on an accent unless indicated or extremely obvious (for example Anaïs- a name where there is no ambiguity).

AmytheDancingBrick · 09/06/2024 07:58

Loo-chee-a - fabulous name. I’ve loved it since I read Mapp & Lucia a very long time ago.

WhereAreWeNow · 09/06/2024 08:00

I would ask if it's Lu-cee-a or Lu-chi-a. Could be either.

Blarn · 09/06/2024 08:03

Lu-sha. But the one I knew was Brazilian an that is how it is produced there. I've never met another so haven't had to think about pronouncing it any other way!

dryshampooer · 09/06/2024 08:09

At my DC school (Scotland east coast) there are two Lucias. Both LOO-CHEE- UH. Both families have Italian heritage. Beautiful name!

CadyEastman · 09/06/2024 09:54

Loo-see-a

NotSentFromIphone · 09/06/2024 09:57

Fellow Scot here I would probably say - Loo-sea-ah

Chickatease · 09/06/2024 09:59

I've known a Lu see ah and a Lu chee ah

Nicebloomers · 09/06/2024 10:02

Lu-chia

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/06/2024 10:18

I automatically read it as Loo-sha (like the island), unless I know the person is Italian or Spanish. Once you'd told me I'd know though.

KirstenBlest · 09/06/2024 14:59

I'd say Loosha, but it might be Lucy-a, Loo-see-a, Lootch-ee-a, Luth-ee-a etc.

CKL987 · 09/06/2024 17:02

Loo-see-a. Based in south east england

HowWasTheEnd · 09/06/2024 17:12

50shadedofmagnolia · 09/06/2024 17:13
