We are expecting a little girl and have whittled down a shortlist.

One of the names is Lucia.

We live in Scotland and wondered how would you pronounce this as keen to know of it would be mispronounced often?

I assumed the English pronunciation would be Loo-see-ah but I know that some would think its Loo-chee-ah.

We don't have even a remotely Italian surname, we just like the name lol

Lucinda is another alternative if you're worried about the mispronunciation of Lucia.

'Mispronounce' there isn't only one way to pronounce it.

it may not be pronounced the way you like, that doesn't make it wrong.

its not the name for you, because it will be pronounced a variety of ways.

i have one friend who is kind of lu chia (like the seeds) others I know are loo see ah, loose eee ya & Lucy yah

its a minefield!

lucy is much easier!!

Yeah mispronounced wasn't the right word to use there lol

I just meant how often would she be asked or correcting pronunciation.

Lucy is a name I'm not keen but we do have another 2 or 3 on the shortlist

I'm Scottish and it's my dds middle name for us it's loo-see-ah. I did find out when she was about a year that my dad had told people it was loo-chee-ah though and corrected him. If you like it I would go for it, my other dd has a really easy to pronounce, read and spell name and I've probably had more people get it wrong or pronounced it wrongly which I always find strange.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 08/06/2024 22:42

I wouldn't know whether it was intended to be Lu-chee-ya like Italian, or Lu-see-a like Spanish or like Lucy, or Lu-sha like St Lucia. People will remember it once you tell them which one it is though, as none are that unusual or hard to say.

CelesteCunningham · 08/06/2024 22:43

I'm Irish and would go with loo-see-ah as my first guess but I know there's other pronunciations so wouldn't be surprised to be ok politely corrected and would try remember for next time.

It's like Helena, Naomi, Sara etc - if you pick a name with multiple pronunciations then people will frequently guess the wrong one at first, and some will struggle to remember the correct version to use. If that will bother you, then best to pick a name with one established main pronunciation.

There are 4 ways to say it.

Loo chi ah
Lu see a
Lucy a
Loo cha

SD1978 · 08/06/2024 22:44

Loo see ah- Scottish here too and it's the only way I'd think to say it.

Loo chia
Loo sha
Lucy a

Loo sha is the nicest

usernother · 08/06/2024 22:46

Loo chee a. But I have heard parents pronounce it loose ee a.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 08/06/2024 22:47

I went to school with a Lucia. Pronounced Loo-chia she is Italian though

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 08/06/2024 22:47

The only Lucia I knew was Spanish and pronounced her name Lu-thia.

Revelatio · 08/06/2024 22:48

I’m British and have only heard Loo-chee-a. I’ve never known anyone called Loo-cee-a. If anything I would say Lucy-a if it wasn’t pronounced the regular way of Loo-Chee-a.

BoostBar · 08/06/2024 22:49

I know two. A loo-CHEE-a and a loo-SEE-a.

Phantasmagorically · 08/06/2024 22:49

loo-chee-ah

Itsraininman · 08/06/2024 22:50

I’m sure Jack Nicholson’s joker refers to Jerry Hall’s character as Loosha

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 08/06/2024 22:54

I would probably say loo-chee-a as my first guess, but it's a name I would definitely ask the preferred pronunciation if I could

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 08/06/2024 22:55

I agree there are 4 ways to pronounce it.
I would say Lu Chee ah if I thought you were Italian, otherwise I would guess at Lu see ah.
It will get pronounced all different ways.
If that doesn’t bother you then go for it. It’s a lovely name.

fatphalange · 08/06/2024 22:56

Lucy with an a on the end

Mercury2702 · 08/06/2024 22:57

Loo sha

RedAutumn · 08/06/2024 22:58

Loo-see-ah

Workawayxx · 08/06/2024 22:58

I latent read the replies but would pronounce Loo-chiah

Fink · 08/06/2024 23:01

Lu-CHEE-ah, like the Italian.

I have heard Lu-SEE-ah but it wouldn't be what I would naturally think of first.

I once knew a Lucia who was pronounced like the island Saint Lucia. Only ever met one like that though.

Spirallingdownwards · 08/06/2024 23:02

I am in the Loo- chia camp based on having to sing Santa Lucia at school in music.

Troubledprimarymum · 08/06/2024 23:04

Loo-See-Ah. I know a Spanish Lucia and that is how she pronounces it.
