Hi! We've finally settled on naming our daughter Marjorie, and now we're just looking for middle names. It doesn't need to have familial significance since Marjorie does already, so any suggestions you've got would be lovely!

This is our list so far:

Marjorie Eloise
Marjorie Aurelia
Marjorie Renée
Marjorie Juliette

FYI - she's a triplet (2 girls 1 boy) and the other girl was to be Cecilia Renée, but we're willing to switch it to something else if Renée works better for Marjorie! So something like Marjorie Renée, Cecilia Eloise IYSWIM. TIA!

Anything but Marjorie.. sorry OP but it’s awful”

No, it really isn’t. It’s also a treasured family name.

Littleoxforddictionary · 04/06/2024 20:32

It is the most grandmothery name! Mine was universally known as marj.

muggart · 04/06/2024 20:33

Marjorie is a lovely name, I'm so happy to see this thread because I saw in the telegraph the other day that Marjorie was on the verge of going extinct.

My granny was called Marjorie. I thought she was Grandma Margarine for an embarrassingly long time. I think her middle name was Elizabeth.

Anyway I vote Juliette as your kid's middle name.

AmberGuide · 04/06/2024 20:39

I don't mind if she was to choose to go by Marge or Margie once older, or even Midge or Madge, I just meant that I wouldn't start her off as it. I think it's got plenty of good nicknames (Maggie, Jorie, Rory, Jo), and I like the full name as well so I'm not too bothered with that.

I don't think it's as big a deal as everyone is saying it is, I don't really need everyone to love it. I think its lovely, as does my husband, and as does my daughter (though her opinion doesn't weigh that much!) and its familial history makes it a name I hold very dear to my heart.

This isn't to say that I'm offended by anyone not liking it, because I don't really mind, I'm just explaining my perspective! Most everyone I've brought it up to IRL doesn't think it's as awful as those online, and I know quite a few friends in America who like it (which is where we're moving)

Thank you to those who commented on the middle names!

Marjorie is my favourite Taylor Swift song, a lovely one for her late grandmother. I know that's not what you asked but if you haven't heard it give it a listen. Beautiful name.

I have heard it and it's gorgeous! Makes me think of my own grandmother, it's just lovely. In fact many of the people I've brought the name up to (mostly in America, where we're moving) have also brought up the song (which is why I listened to it) so I'm starting to think that the connotation that the people she's going to grow up around have with the name is this song, which is quite a positive one.

Marjorie Violet 😍

Cecelia Renée works beautifully. I wouldn't change it. So mellifluous.

Marjorie Renée has too many Rs running into each other.
The same problem goes for Marjorie Aurelia. With that combination, you have the vowel sounds repeating too.
Marjorie Juliette has the J sound repeating.

Marjorie Eloise is gorgeous.

Suggestions:
Marjorie Christabel
Marjorie Emmeline
Marjorie Elspeth
Marjorie Eleanor
Marjorie Celestine
Marjorie Estelle
Marjorie Simone
Marjorie Annabel
Marjorie Francesca
Marjorie Opal
Marjorie Willow
Marjorie Blythe
Marjorie Vivien
Marjorie Violet

Fwiw, imo Marjorie is a lovely name, and it complements Cecilia beautifully.

WarBaby · 04/06/2024 21:10

I love Marjorie but I think it needs a simple and unfussy middle name.

GreenCereal · 04/06/2024 21:22

Yup, came to say you might see an uptick in Marjorie over the coming years as Swifties have kids. It's a lovely name, along the lines of Dorothy to me.

The only issue is that it lends itself to a horrible nickname, if your child is on the bigger side.

People in real life will be polite; that's why people use this board, for unvarnished opinions.

Marge/Midge whatever else you said she might want to call herself...really? Go about introducing yourself as Midge for a month and see how it feels.

Harsh but very truthful advice to take on board OP

marjorie olive
marjorie clementine
marjorie aurora
marjorie grace
marjorie pearl
marjorie willow
marjorie diana
marjorie Luna

MoonKiss · 04/06/2024 23:39

I love Eloise, also Lois goes well with your other names, and I think Louisa should make a comeback. Louisa Juliette is so pretty!
But using your names I’d have:

Cecilia Marjorie
Jasper Harrison
Eloise Juliette

Jeschara · 04/06/2024 23:50

Cecelia is such a beutiful name, I really dislike Margery. You may call her Jorie, but she will get shortened to Marge. Please consider this.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 04/06/2024 23:55

I understand it’s a family name but I think Marjorie would still be considered quite old fashioned - so I’d personally go for something very current/trendy as a middle name so it’s clear she’s not elderly from her full name . Something like Ava (or maybe Esme, Maya, Mila or Mia - her nn could then be Mimi rather than Marge).

Or if you want a longer middle more in a similar style to your current picks then Olivia, Sophia, Isabella etc (or Matilda/Mathilde to get Mimi) - basically the sort of name it’s likely one of the other girls in her school class will have as Marjorie will be fairly uncommon now.

Well I know that's why I wouldn't call her either of those, that was just to say that if she chose to go by those on her own, I wouldn't mind. That was only in response to people saying I shouldn't use it if I hate any of the shortenings.

Jorie or Jo aren't stretches as nicknames either, and it really isn't that hard to ask people not to shorten names (at least in my families circle) I would know, as I have an easily shortened name that people refrain from shortening if I ask them to. But regardless, I don't mind if she chose to go by any of the shortenings once she was older! That was the only reason I even said Midge, I'm not calling my daughter Midge unless she wants it 😭

Margot as a NN!

Grumpynan · 04/06/2024 16:10

How about rose, Marjorie Rose is very pretty

tbh I’m not a fan of Marjorie my MIL was shorten to marj which she hated,

I called my daughter Margaret after my mum and she’s always known as Maggie which really suits her. Margaret Elizabeth May, some said its old fashioned I think traditional

Does she get called Maggie May? I like Maggie- my sister was Marguerite but we just called her Mags 😊

Moveoverdarlin · 05/06/2024 00:24

I adore the names Jasper and Cecilia. But I think Marjorie is awful. The other names are cool, but cute and a bit posh but not pretentious and then you’ve got Marjorie.

It will get shortened to Marge. It’s so old fashioned and just not stood the test of time. I think it would be like calling a little baby Beryl or Barbara, or Hilda.

Firsttimebabymummy · 05/06/2024 09:00

I love Marjorie!

My favourite from previous suggestions are

Marjorie Rose
Marjorie Violet
Marjorie May (maggie may)

JustWannaBeWorthIt · 05/06/2024 09:47

You're proper reaching with Jo.

I am a Jo, and not one in my entire life has someone said 'oh is that short for Marjorie'.

I don't get it; you want to call her Marjorie but are inventing bonkers nicknames to justify it; if you loved it you'd just use it as is and not be casting about for ways to not have to use it.

Pick a nice name and make Marjorie the middle name. She'll thank you in later years.

Mitsky · 05/06/2024 10:06

I agree that pairing a sibling set with one having the beautiful elegant Cecilia and the other being Marjorie seems rather unfair.

Even the natural nicknames Cece and Marge (because realistically Jorie and Rory would be unusual to use) put it into stark comparison.

Shitlord · 05/06/2024 10:14

Aurelia and Renee don't work, many Re sounds. Eloise not really either.

I think it needs a consonant and minimal frilliness. Juliet would work.
