Hi! We've finally settled on naming our daughter Marjorie, and now we're just looking for middle names. It doesn't need to have familial significance since Marjorie does already, so any suggestions you've got would be lovely!

This is our list so far:

Marjorie Eloise
Marjorie Aurelia
Marjorie Renée
Marjorie Juliette

FYI - she's a triplet (2 girls 1 boy) and the other girl was to be Cecilia Renée, but we're willing to switch it to something else if Renée works better for Marjorie! So something like Marjorie Renée, Cecilia Eloise IYSWIM. TIA!

Poor Marjorie when her sister will have such a pretty name she will be stuck with one that makes it sound like she's a 68 year old WI member.

I was afraid people would think this I just think it's so cute!! Might have to rethink but it's so pretty to me, and I like Jorie and Rory as nicknames. Wouldn't call her Marge or Margy, but even Maggie is fine I think, but I like Rory the best.

Edited

I don’t think Rory really works as a natural nickname for Marjorie, and you won’t be able to control what others call her - I bet she will be Marge at school. If you want the nickname Rory, how about Aurora?

Spirallingdownwards · 05/06/2024 10:20

Marjorie Dora if you gave too.

Instead of Cecilia Eloise why not just Cecilia AND Eloise.

Shitlord · 05/06/2024 10:24

I think Marjorie is beautiful in its own right, just the nicknames Madge and Marge really aren't (although I like a good no nonsense name) which is why it hasn't had a resurgence. I wouldn't count on Jorie, Jo or Rory catching on for Marjorie.

EachandEveryone · 05/06/2024 10:34

god it’s an awful name. It’s Madge from Neighbours or the Simpsons. Or the little side kick of Dame Edna. It’s absolutely not a cool old lady name say like Edith or Elsie it’s just harsh and people will laugh.

TotalDramarama24 · 05/06/2024 10:40

I'd use Marjorie as a middle name but not as a first name as it's not great. People will assume you are a huge fan of the Nursery Nurse rather than Taylor Swift I think. It's not great to call one triplet Cecilia and saddle the other with Marjorie.

HandaFae · 05/06/2024 10:59

Marjorie will be one of those names that makes a comeback and is loved. A great name.

I'd put it in a similar category to Margot and look at how that has become a newly established popular name.

HandaFae · 05/06/2024 11:06

And something short with it.

Marjorie Mae (cute) - a child I know with a similar name is known as Mimi
Marjorie Rose
Marjorie Fay

PurpleChrayn · 05/06/2024 14:07

Dhorze.

KlongDuplo · 05/06/2024 23:22

Why are folks so harsh on Marjorie while loving Cecilia? I don't get it. To me, they're quite similar. To say Cecilia is 'prettier' or 'more elegant' than Marjorie is surely subjective. So much is about the cultural references to names different people have.

Personally, Cecilia doesn't appeal to me at all. If I were the twin named Cecilia, I would be jealous of my sister Marjorie's beautiful name.

Cecilia is a timeless classic, Marjorie is of a bygone (1950s housewife) era.

Hotgirlwinter · 05/06/2024 23:28

It’s a lovely name if you say it with a French accent…. But assuming you’re not in France?

Id go with a shorter middle name as PP suggested above (Mae, Rose, Joy)

Also, congratulations on triplets! So special, bet they will be absolutely adorable!

Catnipcupcakes · 05/06/2024 23:33

I think Marjorie is a lovely name, maybe because I still have a huge fondness for ‘To The Manor Born’.

Jorie and Rory would be diminutives, not nick names.

I think Aurelia is a nice pairing with it.

Well there you go then, it is indeed absolutely subjective!

Marjorie is a name from medieval times (apparently) so why sould it not be considered a timeless classic too? I personally think it's very lovely, and has a lovely meaning.

The negative association you mention with 50s housewife era just means that people currently associate it with grandmothers rather than babies. It'll come back around.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/06/2024 00:50

It’s not a timeless classic because the definition of a timeless name is one that you can’t tell the age of the person. So it either needs to be a name that has always been popular (like Elizabeth) or never been very popular (like Cecilia and Rosalie).

Cecilia would be a timeless classic as it’s well known with great history but you can’t guess how old a Cecilia is. Majorie is well known with a great history but was a top 100 name until the 1950’s. So statistically the vast majority of Majorie’s are elderly and they’ll be a fair number of them out there, unlike her sisters names.

Juliet would be fellow timeless classic name (in the UK) - well known (Shakespearean!) yet has never made the top 100. Eloise would have been the same until the 2000’s when the El- names became a trend - now its Top 100 and on a rise in English speaking countries thanks to the popularity of Bridgerton.

While I think Juliet is the best pairing with her sisters names, I’d definitely choose Eloise over Marjorie. I DO think Marjorie makes a wonderful middle name though.

Anything but Marjorie.. sorry OP but it’s awful

This

She will get called Marge

CaptainJeanLucPicardOfTheStarshipEnterprise · 06/06/2024 02:12

I like it. I like the way you’ve spelled it as well. I like the “mar” prefix. It reminds me of the name Marisol, which I really like. I agree with the posters who say that you need a shorter second name to balance the longer first name though.

Majorie Rose
Marjorie Jane
Marjorie Anne

Beachs · 06/06/2024 07:04

Why not go the whole hog and call her Flora Marjorie?

unless Marjorie is a family name please rethink it it’s awful

LePetitMarseillias · 06/06/2024 08:18

She will get call d Marj whether you like it or not op.

Call your child another name and get a cat called Marjory. Please.

LePetitMarseillias · 06/06/2024 08:20

AmberGuide · 04/06/2024 20:39

I don't mind if she was to choose to go by Marge or Margie once older, or even Midge or Madge, I just meant that I wouldn't start her off as it. I think it's got plenty of good nicknames (Maggie, Jorie, Rory, Jo), and I like the full name as well so I'm not too bothered with that.

I don't think it's as big a deal as everyone is saying it is, I don't really need everyone to love it. I think its lovely, as does my husband, and as does my daughter (though her opinion doesn't weigh that much!) and its familial history makes it a name I hold very dear to my heart.

This isn't to say that I'm offended by anyone not liking it, because I don't really mind, I'm just explaining my perspective! Most everyone I've brought it up to IRL doesn't think it's as awful as those online, and I know quite a few friends in America who like it (which is where we're moving)

Thank you to those who commented on the middle names!

Those people in real life are being polite.

JustWannaBeWorthIt · 06/06/2024 08:26

I also think Cecelia is similarly awful but the thread was asking specifically about Marjorie.

TM1979 · 06/06/2024 08:59

Sorry but Marjorie is an awful name. Please don’t do that to your daughter. Life is tricky enough for teens these days without having a dreadful name. If you love it so much use it a middle name or change your own name to Marjorie but don’t inflict it on your kid.

EducatingArti · 06/06/2024 09:31

I really quite like Marjorie with the ie ending.
When I was young people would have been horrified at a child called Wilfred or Edith or Violet or Matilda or Pearl or Ruby or Arthur or Henry as there were so definitely "old people" names. Now they are quite popular and no one bats an eyelid. I even read on here, someone saying they liked Gladys recently!

I remember at school in the 70s, a teacher telling us her name had been very unpopular and unusual when she was young. It got criticised as being a "Victorian maid's" name. It was Sarah - there were always 2 or 3 Sarah's in every class I was in!

Names have about a 90 to 100 year popularity cycle I think. Hilda will come in again I think off the back of Edith and Ethel and Matilda. So will Beryl. Pearl is already making a comeback. For boys, I think Robert, Harold and Dennis will come back in again. Stanley already is. We may even get round to Alan and Raymond and Susan and Patricia and Rita and Elaine in a decade or so!

I'd say go for it if you like it. I think you'll be on the leading edge of the new name trends and in 5-10 years it will be more common.

Cecilia Renee and ..

Eloise Marjorie
Juliette Marjorie
Mietta Marjorie
Lisa Marjorie

Marjorie is sweet for a second name.
Marj Simpson is not as good a role model as Lisa.

Thefaceofboe · 07/06/2024 19:05

My daughters middle name is Marjorie after a family member, I think it’s lovely.

I like the idea of Marjorie Joy someone suggested
