Garri for a girl?

My late dad was called Gary. I'd love to honour him by naming our DD Garri, or do you think it's better spelt Gari? Middle name will be Anne.
Thanks in advance

You could use Garnet with Gari for short. I've never met a Garnet but other gem/precious stone names seem popular so why not?

😂

You laugh, but I actually had an Aunt Garry. Born in the 1930s.

bradpittsbathwater · 04/05/2024 13:12

Garri-Anne, bloody hell.

' super cute for a girl '

kittens and puppies are ' cute '

will it still be ' super cute ' when baby girl is 13 ?

or 33 ?

or 53 ?

or 83 ?

or just a ridiculous made up name that she may have to live with forever...

‘Super cute’ or anything cute is only good as far as toddlers. Then it becomes twee & infantilising.

Absolutely.
But Garry isn't cute full stop.

True. It might be cute for a boy kitten, at a stretch. A little fluffy grey one.

Gabriella? Galina?

eggandonion · 04/05/2024 13:28

Garry Hynes is an important female in theatre in Ireland. So wouldn't be unknown where I live.
But unusual...

HuntingoftheSnark · 04/05/2024 13:30

Gariana is, I believe, a name and is ok.

GrazingSheep · 04/05/2024 13:36

@eggandonion
Garry is her nickname. She was christened Margaret Geraldine Mary.

yousexybugger · 04/05/2024 13:41

I rather love Garry as a nickname! Not a full version though

YourWinter · 04/05/2024 13:42

No. Just don’t.

Hiddendoor · 04/05/2024 13:46

Garriet or Garrianne or Garrildene or Garrilene or Garribeth or Garrisonella.

Vastlyoverrated · 04/05/2024 13:49

I think Garri is fine! Pretty.

Names are mostly nonsense anyway, just letters we find 'acceptable' or 'unacceptable'.

I wouldn't even blink at meeting a Garri. I meet people from all over the world in my job and many have names that Mumsnet would mock, just as well many people on Mumsnet don't encounter them and vice versa.

ginasevern · 04/05/2024 13:50

Well, I suppose it makes a change from Ellie, Evie, Darcy and the rest.

productiony · 04/05/2024 13:52

Carrie is lovely and a bit like Gary

Yes like Gariana Grande 😍

Rubyupbeat · 04/05/2024 13:55

My best friend at primary school was a girl called Garri
No one thought anything about it, she was called Garri, that was it.
She would be 60 now.

Whenever anyone is banging on about a name being unacceptable on Mumsnet, I just imagine if someone had suggested 'Priti' as a name 10 years ago, everyone would have laughed/mocked/said it wasn't suitable for a lawyer or a judge or a cabinet minister...

DrJoanAllenby · 04/05/2024 14:14

What about Gazza?

Gary is also rhyming slang...

For what? My husband is named Gary, so I'd like to tell him 😂

Sasqwatch · 04/05/2024 14:17

Anne Garri is much better 😡😂😂😂😂

Turns out they might have been right though Grin

What a weird comparison. Priti is obviously an Indian name completely suitable for a girl of Indian descent - particularly with the obviously Indian surname Patel. Gary is a boys name, Gari is the chav version of it that has been made up to pretend it could also be a girls name.

I knew a Garnet but he was a man. It suited him not sure about for a girl.
