Garri for a girl?

My late dad was called Gary. I'd love to honour him by naming our DD Garri, or do you think it's better spelt Gari? Middle name will be Anne.
Thanks in advance

I don't like Terri Toni Harri and especially Garri

Why give a girl an outdated boys name

ProfessorFJLewisThatsYouThatIs · 04/05/2024 01:48

I like the Garri-Anne suggestion. Thanks!

Wasn't that YOUR plan from the start, though? Nothing to do with any PPs.

GoodVibesHere · 04/05/2024 01:50

Poor kid

To follow the time-honoured advice in situations like this, try spending the next three months introducing yourself as Garri to everybody you meet whom you don't already know.

See if their looks of puzzlement turn into ones of "Oh, of course, silly me" when you explain that it's spelled with an 'i' at the end.

Assuming you're serious, don't ask why shouldn't you choose a name for your daughter that will make her future life more difficult on a daily basis than it ever needs to be; ask why you wouldn't choose one of the tens of thousands of actual girls' names out there and give her the gift of avoiding all of that lifelong drama.

You're also partially depriving her of her chance to make the first impression on new people that she wants to. Instead of people remembering her as that kind/friendly/intelligent/gentle/strong/caring/smiley/wise/determined girl/woman, she will just be primarily remembered as 'that girl with the boys' name'.

Every child is an individual human being…please don’t give your child a ridiculous name for sentimental reasons!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/05/2024 05:12

While it’s not a name I’d choose for a boy or certainly a girl I do quite like it. It’s got a sort of edginess to it. I’d say definitely hyphenate it with a feminine name, though.

Moreteaandchocolate · 04/05/2024 06:02

If you’re being serious, then it’s a no from me. Geri would be better.

ncforuchelp · 04/05/2024 06:06

Please don't call your child Gary.

Maybe there are some other names in your dad's side of the family you could use, instead of inflicting a male name on a baby girl - for life or at least until she changes her name by deed pole...

Quite. I do not know why people cannot choose pleasant, classic and ordinary names for their children rather than picking something that will embarrass them later in life.

FangsForTheMemory · 04/05/2024 06:46

Terri is short for Teresa and Toni is short for Antonia, that’s why they are acceptable for girls. Garri is just awful.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 04/05/2024 08:39

Call her Anne with Gari as a middle name?
AnneGari?😡😡
🤣

I'm sorry but it is a terrible, ridiculous idea and I'm. Sure your lovely dad is looking down and shouting 'noooo!'

Gazza will be a sweet nickname, esp when she's crying.

😁

Gaura is a type of flower which is better than giving her a male name. Let her be her own person and cherish the memories of your Dad.

Sounds like the mum had a face pack on when they went to register 'Laura'

MissBattleaxe · 04/05/2024 08:47

There are ways to honour a loved one without saddling your daughter with a name she'll hate. She'll also get teased. Could you use your Dad's Mum's name or a surname as a middle name?

CelesteCunningham · 04/05/2024 08:48

Jimberley was funny but these rip off threads are getting old really really fast.

MissBattleaxe · 04/05/2024 08:48

How about Gabrielle?

NotABeliever · 04/05/2024 08:48

Good grief. I hope this is a wind up!
Assuming it's not, I also don't like Toni or Harri for a girl but someone Garri is worse. There can't be a rational explanation why Garri is worse. Just accept that it is very very much worse and don't name your daughter that. Leave it for a future son if you're having more children.

NoCloudsAllowed · 04/05/2024 08:49

I'd go for keith-ellen instead

Maddy70 · 04/05/2024 08:53

Not sure its a great idea naming your child after an ecstasy pill. They definitely wont get taken the piss out of :)

How about that as a middle name . Or Geraldine or similar

commonground · 04/05/2024 08:56

Yes, I liked the Jimberly vibe (and could imagine a kid called Jimberly Kimberly).

But this is silly now.

(But you do you if it makes you lol.)

dontforgetme · 04/05/2024 08:59

I have a Toni and my god I have received some shit from people over the years - even taxi drivers!

If you like it op then go for it!

I love my DD's name. Also named after my dad.

XMissPlacedX · 04/05/2024 09:01

It's an awful name, I'm really sorry.

DisforDarkChocolate · 04/05/2024 09:01

Fecking cruel rather than funny.

Moveoverdarlin · 04/05/2024 09:02

Don’t believe this for one minute.

It would be bloody awful to lumber a little boy with Gary, but a girl!

LennyBalls · 04/05/2024 09:04

Erm. Just no
