Absolutely love the name Indie - it was one on my list!

I also think it works perfectly on its own and doesn’t need to be a nickname. Names suggested by PP’s like India are completely different to Indie in my opinion. But I’m also one of those who prefers Lottie to Charlotte, Gigi to Georgia etc and I appear to be in the minority on Mumsnet 😂

I think it's pretty awful and sounds like a nickname. It's also a twee word for a private school, as in "DD goes to a lovely nurturing little indie...." bleugh.

Indira is a fine name.

loropianalover · 26/04/2024 00:05

I liked it when it first got its boom but I think it’s overused now… there will prob be other Indies/Indias in class. You could definitely come up with something similar that’s just more unique!

I love it but know two puppies called Indy so wouldn't be able to use it.

We used to know an American family with an older dog called Indiana (their home state) - who could evacuate an entire house for half an hour every time he (frequently) blew off.

Names I think are similar vibe to India/Indie…

Ines, Iris, Ivy, Lola, Roxy, Esme, Effie, Luna (bit overused), Cleo, Astrid, Frankie, Coco, Sienna, Saffron/Saffy, Jasmine.

Theoldwoman · 26/04/2024 00:35

I know a couple, both spelt Indi, lovely girls, cool name!

Duckies · 26/04/2024 07:52

Right now I think of the hippy dog from Bluey.

Before having kids would have thought Indiana Jones... who was also named after a dog! 🐕

Or the Independent newspaper.

Having said that I think it sounds nice.

Isitme1114 · 26/04/2024 08:18

I love Indy from Bluey!

It doesn't seem like a name.

katebushh · 26/04/2024 09:41

It a no from me, it's twee and a bit low rate.

Workawayxx · 26/04/2024 09:43

I’m not keen but prefer the spelling Indie. I do like a bohemian type name that I think Indie sort of fits into but think there are nicer ones out there.

oldnorsesaga · 26/04/2024 10:20

I love it, but for other children, not mine. There's nothing really wrong with it, I just don't prefer it to other names
I love it on girl with Indie spelling. Don't love India, Indira or Indiana, and this rare exception where I love nickname more than full name, but Indigo is OK (Indigo is boy to me)

That said, I think it's kinda of trendy hipster name. I think it will age well on adult, since her/his coworkers will be named Alfie or Millie, but it's still has that teenage vibe to me. That said, I think Indie sounds more standalone than some of nickname names such as Alfie, which to be it's just (very!) nickname.
I think full names Indiana and India are more dated than Indie by itself, but maybe it's bit on downward path, trend wise

tl.dr. I think Indie is fine on girl but has some drawbacks.

Commonsense22 · 26/04/2024 11:21

Lovely :)

user1492757084 · 26/04/2024 11:52

Indigo is sweet.
India is fine
Indie is a nick name for each

Indiana is a boys' name

unsync · 26/04/2024 12:06

Makes me think of Harrison Ford. More specifically, Kate Capshaw screaming over the fiery pit.

RuthW · 26/04/2024 12:16

I like India, but not Indie as a full name.

MerryChristmasToYou · 26/04/2024 12:28

India sounds and looks nice but there's something not right about using it.

WhimsicalMoth · 26/04/2024 12:46

I think it's sweet, but maybe not for a full name.
Some people use it for my daughter's nickname, which has not actually been suggested here.

Mugcake · 26/04/2024 16:26

It's very pretty, I prefer the spelling indie however I think I'd go for india and use it as nickname

TheValueOfEverything · 26/04/2024 16:31

Indy is a well-used acronym/slang for independent (as in school, politician, record-label, genre of music).

You need to think what will be best for this person in the long run: - not just the baby, little girl, teenager - the adult as well. Give them a proper grown-up name, and use the cute nickname while they're little (maybe they'll love it once they grow older, maybe not - they have options!)

How about Indigo, Indira or India?

SittingBackAndWatchingTheClowns · 26/04/2024 16:33

My son's dog is named Indie

theworldie · 26/04/2024 16:35

I like it - I have a friend with a dd called indigo blue (indie for short) and she really suits it.

Sera1989 · 26/04/2024 16:37

I had a cat named Indi (short for Indiana) and everyone thought he was a girl because of his name. I've never come across a female Indi (or Indie) before

stargirl1701 · 26/04/2024 16:39

Dr Jones...

Anuggetofpurestgreen · 26/04/2024 16:41

It's a good dog name. I wouldn't say it was particularly chavvy for a human girl? Definitely not for a boy though.
