Bit dated by now unfortunately. I like the sound of it but not the connotations.
Spelling Indy just makes me think of private school.
I know 2 female Indianas, couple of Indias and an Indigo.

I was going to say I think it will really date. I hadn’t thought of it already being dated though.

It’s not an awful name - better if short for India or Indigo. I struggle with Indiana as a name - somehow sounds like Alabama or California as a name. I realise Georgia is a state but somehow that works.

To me the biggest association of indie is with independent cinema.

Chickoletta · 26/04/2024 16:45

I’m a teacher and have taught 3 boys called Indie over 20 odd years. All 3 were badly behaved and had slightly alternative parents who made things worse. A small sample size, I know, but enough to make it a big no from me.

Quornflakegirl · 26/04/2024 16:48

I know a 17 year old Indie who is from a v posh upper class family, she is the far from a “chav”

miniaturepixieonacid · 26/04/2024 17:12

Is it really dated? The only Indie I know is 3 years old. I thought it was a very modern name.

I like it but I love India. I'd use India with nn Indie.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 26/04/2024 17:21

I'd never heard of this name before, so I would dislike it as a made-up name.

However, as a nickname with a 'proper' formal name it would be nice. I used to know a man whose family nickname was Injie. The explanation for this unusual name was that he had been dropped as a baby and had "bounced like an India rubber ball".

Carouselfish · 26/04/2024 17:21

Indy for a boy I much prefer than for a girl.

Longform I've seen Indiana or Indio.

Girl longform Indira, India or Indigo

Lulu1919 · 26/04/2024 17:43

Love it

Anotherillnes · 26/04/2024 17:57

Never come across it, but from PP it very much is a name. My first thought would be independent school. Wouldn’t use in Scotland either Indy often used regarding a referendum- previous or wanting a new one and likely if becomes independent.

Maybe applies to Wales - I don’t know.

Whiskeyandkittens · 26/04/2024 17:59

I've never met one - my first thought is Indiana Jones.

I know two cats called Indie though!

NoSnowdrop · 26/04/2024 17:59

It’s a hard no. Dreadful.

TidyDancer · 26/04/2024 18:11

It's sweet on a small child but for me it's not a name for an adult. I think it's easy to forget you're naming a whole person and not just a little baby sometimes.

takemeawayagain · 26/04/2024 18:13

Cute as a nn but i would have a 'proper' name too.

Sure, but name usage changes

A while ago it was a bit hippy, now it’s a bit low rent - I think it will be the Tracy of the 2020s, along with Darcy. I also think it’s trying hard to be cool, and failing.

So if you do OP, I’d make it short for Indigo

MerryChristmasToYou · 27/04/2024 16:42

Sure, but name usage changes This. Also society and culture changes.
I was first aware of India as a girl's name from the Royal Wedding 1981 bridesmaid. Strong family connection with India.
45 years on and the colonial association isn't viewed in the same way.

TeamPolin · 27/04/2024 18:55

I worked with a male Indy years ago. He'd be in his 50's now....

SunnyFog · 27/04/2024 19:01

I went to school with Indy short for Inderjit and Indy short for Inderpal.

Those were just the ones in my friendship group - it was a popular name then, do not know is it outdated now among Punjabi Sikhs.

Doratheexplorer1 · 27/04/2024 19:01

We know an Indy. His name is Indiveer. Lovely soul. Lovely name.

Notquitefinishe · 27/04/2024 19:02

Finishing it with an i would be the worst choice of all. Names like Maddi and Nicki are very dated so I'm surprised that's being suggested. I think it's pretty cute but absolutely sounds like a nickname, much like Immie might be for Imogen. I'd be wondering what it was short for if I met an Indie.

It's a name for a dog for me. It's not great.

ETA for a white British kid. Obviously Indy can be used short for names from other cultures. But I don't think that's what you're talking about.

Oh well the two girls called Indi at my son’s junior school are clearly time travellers from the eighties then.

lucindasspunkyfunkyvoice · 25/04/2024 21:35

No sorry. It's not a name

Bit chavvy/ made up

Yes, this.

SallyWD · 01/05/2024 10:55

I don't like it I'm afraid. It doesn't sound like a real name. I love the Indian name Indira or the name India so it could be used as a nickname for that - but I don't like it as a stand alone name.

FlatWhite2 · 01/05/2024 23:07

Love Indie but would definitely go with that spelling!

Pieceofpurplesky · 02/05/2024 00:07

I like it. They would have a brother Bhodi and a sister Luna.
