Hello,

I’ve never personally met a Roman. Is it popular in your location? My husband and I like it a lot but not sure about the popularity.

thanks everyone x

I know of a couple, both teens now.

LaughterLentil · 28/03/2024 12:54

Roman Kemp springs to mind

KirstenBlest · 28/03/2024 13:15

Not keen. The stats only go up to 2021 but I'd imagine to remain on an upward curve from #23.

Moreteaandchocolate · 28/03/2024 13:18

I’ve never met one. Not my usual taste in names but I don’t mind it.

WaltzingWaters · 28/03/2024 13:18

Someone else who had just given birth named their son that when I was in hospital.

I’m not keen personally, but it’s a normal enough, non offensive name- so if you like it go for it!

OldTinHat · 28/03/2024 13:22

My neighbours have a 2yr old Roman.

BostonMA · 28/03/2024 13:25

@KirstenBlest @Moreteaandchocolate @WaltzingWaters I didn’t ask for your opinion on whether you liked the name. I couldn’t care about that! I just wanted to know if it was popular

ive noticed on MN people can be so snooty about names.

There are 2 Romans in my town. One is a grown man and the other is primary school age. So it's not very common in my area

KirstenBlest · 28/03/2024 13:40

@BostonMA , I'm not being snooty about it, I just don't happen to like it.

Lots of people do like it and the name is very popular.

If you go to Baby names in England and Wales - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk) and scroll down to 4. Baby names by mother’s usual area of residence, you can look up how popular it was in your area in 2021.

GentleGentileschi · 28/03/2024 13:43

I’ve noticed my partner’s friends have all called their son’s either Louis, Leo or Roman.
I think it will be climbing up the charts.

I would say it’s not a popular name with the middle class, but doesn’t sound like you care about that so don’t worry!

Heckythump1 · 28/03/2024 13:43

I know a couple, it's not mad popular, but also not rare and unheard of.

caringcarer · 28/03/2024 13:48

My 17 year old is called Roman. I love the name.

caringcarer · 28/03/2024 13:49

He's the only one I know.

DrJoanAllenby · 28/03/2024 14:16

I know a couple of older men.

Not sure if I would have it nowadays because of that ghastly Roman Kemp.

Boopear · 28/03/2024 14:18

I imagine Succession has driven awareness / possible popularity of the name.

Mayhemmumma · 28/03/2024 14:19

I know one, he is 5.

KalaMush · 28/03/2024 14:20

I only know one, he's a teenager.

TotalDramarama24 · 28/03/2024 14:28

I know a baby Roman but his parents say they get a lot of "Ronan?" when they say his name, which has spoilt it a bit.

CaptainCallisto · 28/03/2024 14:40

There are currently in the primary school I work in (N Yorks), so it's fairly popular here.

TeaPleaseX · 28/03/2024 14:41

Really popular here. I like it but prefer Rowan. Ended up having a girl so couldn't use neither anyway 😂

IamaRevenant · 28/03/2024 14:58

I know two. One is Albanian in his 30s and one's a UK toddler. Both delightful people so I have only good associations with the name!

NelliePerf · 28/03/2024 15:32

I know 4! One a middle aged man from the Balkans, and 3 aged 3-6.

You can have a female Rowan!

mmgirish · 28/03/2024 15:36

I've taught 3 Romans. They were all Russian.

WhoaJayShettybambalam · 28/03/2024 15:37

I heard someone calling the name to a little boy on the beach last summer. He looked around 8.
They were a very shouty family so I heard it a lot.
