What do you think about Chanel? Is it too chavvy or is it a respectable name? I think it sounds beautiful but I’m not sure what others might think. Is this name too tied to the luxury brand? I know there’s parents these days naming their kids ridiculous things like Gucci though.

Well, latin Americans do this all the time. I know a Cuban Chanel. I also know an Ecuadorian Milton who got called this, not after the poet, but the brand name of a baby bottle disinfecting method, the Milton method. And so on and so forth. I wouldn´t do it, as to me it sounds like you are trying to appear something you are not.

Chanel is no different to Gucci or Prada- even if you change the spelling to something like Chanelle.

It makes me think of names like Chardonnay and Armani (which I heard in a shop 👀 )

WrongSortOfPoster · 19/03/2024 10:49

We considered Portia as a potential name as it was a relative's name.
I know an Amani - it's a muslim name, I think.

But Portia is an entirely different name to Porsche! And Amani to Armani!

WettyBite · 19/03/2024 10:52

I know a Chanel who is in her late twenties now. I think it’s an awful name, sorry.

FasterthanaButteredOtter · 19/03/2024 10:53

Chavvy as a chavvy thing on a chavvy day.

And no different for most people than Gucci, Armani, Prada or Chardonnay. Stereotypes all the way but it's true. People will think worse of her (and you) for an awful name. That's just human nature.

Taylormiffed · 19/03/2024 10:54

No.
Do you remember the parrot that went missing?

FartSock5000 · 19/03/2024 11:49

@Andrea279 its so chavvy.

Its also French for canal, water way. Not exactly pretty.

If you like the way it sounds, why not use something more unique like Shanelle or Channelle that gives the same sound on the tongue but isn't directly naming your child after a brand founded by a Nazi informant.

Think of future proofing the name as well. Brands sometimes get cancelled (Marchesa due to Weinstein, Balenciaga due to child sex trafficking etc) and you wouldn't want your precious child with a name linked to something awful.

TheBirdintheCave · 19/03/2024 11:52

@SKG231 In defense of poor Tiffany, it's actually an ancient name! 😅

Chanel - right up (or down) there with Waynetta.😙

cordeliachaseatemyhandbag · 19/03/2024 12:06

Chantal is a proper French name.

Chypre · 19/03/2024 12:12

Too "out there". How about Miuccia (Prada), Lora (Loro Piano), Mara (Max Mara), Jil (Sander). If you are after quiet luxury-old money bs nonsense, you are better off with something that sounds like a heritage name. As if you give the name after someone, grandmother or auntie - Penelope, Margot, Francesca, Patricia.

Shetlands · 19/03/2024 12:14

My test for any name is whether it goes well with Doctor or Professor in front of it. I'm afraid Chanel fails my test.

WrongSortOfPoster · 19/03/2024 12:20

@NotestoSelf , but if you only hear the names, you won't know if it's Portia or Porsche, or Amani or Armani.
If you'd never come across the names Portia and Amani , you might think they were unique spellings of brand names.

qazxc · 19/03/2024 12:37

I think that anybody hearing Chanel will immediately think the child is named after the brand, it's such a strong association.

viques · 19/03/2024 12:48

Shame the OP isn’t having triplets. Yves, Saint and Laurent would have playground panache.

SpringtimeBunny · 19/03/2024 12:48

🤣🤣🤣🤣

SpringtimeBunny · 19/03/2024 12:49

"Chanelllllllllll! Where are you Chanel?!?!"

If you know, you know

TeaPleaseX · 19/03/2024 13:05

@SpringtimeBunny She's an African Gray and her names CHANELLLLLLLLLL.

tinytemper66 · 19/03/2024 19:55

Look at the video online about a parrot 🦜 called Chanel and then come back.

tinytemper66 · 19/03/2024 19:58

Ready through all the posts a few people remember the 🦜

salamithumbs · 19/03/2024 20:19

I think it sounds tacky tbh even though I knew a Chanel growing up! Too perfumey 🤷 maybe Chantelle or Chantal?

Toottooot · 19/03/2024 20:29

Goes well with Fendi as a middle name.

To be fair, Doctors & Professors are known by their surname. Such as Dr Doe or Professor Smith
