What do you think about Chanel? Is it too chavvy or is it a respectable name? I think it sounds beautiful but I’m not sure what others might think. Is this name too tied to the luxury brand? I know there’s parents these days naming their kids ridiculous things like Gucci though.

I think it does attract too many negative social stereotypes, unfortunately, because it is a pretty sounding name.

Only if it's baby No. 5.

Brilliant

WandaWonder · 19/03/2024 05:35

What about Armani, Argos, Prada?

😂😂😂
👏🏻

No OP, I think it's awful

And they'd spend their whole life getting comments

benjoin · 19/03/2024 05:59

It's fine but it is like calling a child George at Asda

SacreBleugh · 19/03/2024 06:02

Waitrose- nn Rosie
M&S - sp. Emmaness
L'Oréal

Please don't.

breakfastdinnerandtea · 19/03/2024 07:43

I knew a Chanel growing up (and also a Chanelle). I couldn't bear either of them so I guess that's swaying my decision, but I think it's an awful name. I think it sounds ugly. The one spelled Chanel got a lot of "channel" pronunciations too.

IWishYouWouldJust · 19/03/2024 07:46

I think that to some people it cons across as aspirational and artless.

To others it would seem very sophisticated.

Only if it's baby No. 5.

😁

It’s no different to Gucci

And I hate the c word but those that use it would certainly use it in this case.

It’s a terrible thing to inflict on a child

MirandaBlu · 19/03/2024 01:27

It's a surname, so in that respect no "worse" in terms of provenance or "legitimacy" than, say, Bailey or Ryan or Madison or Taylor. Or Gucci. If it's a family name, I wouldn't necessarily be put off of using it, but otherwise it might be heavily associated with one specific family that's not yours.

Chanel Miller is the name of the US author who went viral on BuzzFeed outing herself as the plaintiff in the infamous Stanford Rape case after the convicted rapist got a slap on the wrist, and then wrote a best-selling memoir about her ordeal. She has a sister called Tiffany.

It’s association is far more luxury brand than surname, especially as it would be a v unusual surname in the UK

So it’s like calling your kid Gucci or Dolce and thinking it sounds sophisticated when in fact it is the opposite.

judgementfail · 19/03/2024 08:19

No. And again no.

Coco on the other hand is cool AF.

Really randomly I was just behind someone with the name Chanel at a Starbucks this morning and the young man on the counter didn't know how to spell it (and for some reason didn't ask her). His older female colleague rolled her eyes and said 'you spell it as it sounds' and wrote Chanel but I wondered whether it was in fact Chanelle and she should have checked. Anyway she will have a lifetime of spelling it for people.

FloofCloud · 19/03/2024 09:30

I picture a toddler in a Burberry shell suit and high heels carrying fake Gucci bag - it's a no from me

TheBirdintheCave · 19/03/2024 09:35

I don't think that's the best idea. Not least of all as Chanel is such a well known brand. To me it would be akin to calling a child Tesco.

Gabrielle was the designer's actual given name.

NotestoSelf · 19/03/2024 09:37

LittleBearPad · 18/03/2024 22:39

It is no different to Gucci, which you consider ridiculous.

This. It's exactly the same as Gucci, a family surname strongly linked in the public mind to a luxury brand.

No sorry. Chantel/ Chardonnay are just as bad IMO.

DillDanding · 19/03/2024 10:00

Dreadful. Don’t do it.

DrJoanAllenby · 19/03/2024 10:13

I know a bulldog called Chanel.

WrongSortOfPoster · 19/03/2024 10:14

@Saschka , The name Shanelle is an alternative spelling of Chanel.
If I was in a shop and someone calls out a name, I don't really care how it's spelt.

WrongSortOfPoster · 19/03/2024 10:17

Emmanesse sounds good. Might use it. St Michael for a boy though.

SKG231 · 19/03/2024 10:21

Awful, tacky and chavvy.

along the same lines as Coco, Porsha, Tiffany
