Mavis is just awful . Not keen on Hazel. Know a boy called Rowan and RIver is a bit hippyish. How about Delphie?

Shetlands · 18/02/2024 23:57

Not keen on those. How about:

Violet
Sylvie
Audrey
Lydia
Cecily

NannyR · 19/02/2024 00:05

Rowan and Hazel are lovely. River seems a bit trendy and overused at the moment and Mavis is just no - I know some fantastic Mavis's but they are all over 70.

SoupAnyone · 19/02/2024 00:12

Willow
Seren
Maeve

SkaneTos · 19/02/2024 00:14

Especially Hazel.

❤️ Rowan and River but my personal fave atm is Flo 😄

toomanyleggings · 19/02/2024 00:35

Sorry all awful. Rowan at a push

TheShellBeach · 19/02/2024 00:38

Mavis is due a comeback.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 19/02/2024 00:39

Mavis - excellent name. If your surname is Broggins it’s a must.

You cannot improve on Mavis Broggins.

Babla · 19/02/2024 01:17

Not Mavis
Not River
Rowan is a boy's name?

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 19/02/2024 01:32

If you like River how about Reeva?
Really don't like Mavis
Hazel is so lovely

FloofCloud · 19/02/2024 03:10

Big no to Mavis ... reminds me of Mavis Cruet from Will O the Wisp (fairy, top middle)

Hazel is the only one I’d even consider and I don’t like it much.

If you want a river-related name, what about Ondine or Aude? There are scads of lovely flower names. One of my favourite names is Hortensia, which means ‘garden’.

confusedbythesystem · 19/02/2024 04:50

Rowan is a great nature name, clear to pronounce, easy to spell (though boys may get Rohan too). I know of both a girl and boy locally called Rowan - both teens now. I guess for a girl you could also lengthen to Rowana if you prefer? I like the 'an' ending though and the ambiguity of a unisex name.

Hazel- never liked this, a bit fey somehow and not in a good way. I think it's the Zel sound...also don't like Zelda!

River - a bit more attention-seeking than your other names. What if you have a quiet child who prefers to be under the radar? Just written down, it's not as neat and rounded a word as Rowan, so looks less of a name.

Mavis - a bit drippy. Not sure why Mabel seems fresher and Mavis so dreary, it just is - sorry!

erikbloodaxe · 19/02/2024 05:03

Rowan is a boy's name and the rest are awful

Toomuchgoingon79 · 19/02/2024 05:13

Mavis is awful. River and Rowen are normally associated with boys. Hazel reminds me of my great aunt.

Other suggestions:

Wren
Quinn
Seren
Willow

Eden
Nova
Noelle
Juniper
Harper
Cora
Callie
Aubrey
Avery
Blair
Cassia

A family l know with Mavis and Hazel also have Vera. I think Mavis fits into the old names that are coming back category so it's fine.
Same type
Edith
Bertha
Harriet
Dorothy

Marcipex · 19/02/2024 06:02

Rowan is lovely.

River and Hazel are okay.
I just can’t like Mavis; it’s too old-lady. Merle is a nicer bird name.

DodgeDog · 19/02/2024 06:16

Prefer Maeve

like hazel and Rowen too

ShoesoftheWorld · 19/02/2024 06:33

Rowan's lovely, my favourite unisex name. Hazel's nice - I knew a lovely one at university. Mavis isn't to my taste but I think it's part of the generation of names that will soon be coming back in a big way, or already are, so why not, if you want to be a bit ahead of the curve? River is in the 'no, just no' category for me. Far too associated with River Phoenix, and, like a PP said, quite a name to carry.

IamaRevenant · 19/02/2024 06:50

Mavis is a definite no. It makes me think of a larger elderly woman and I just can't picture it on a baby/child/young woman.

River is pretty but will always be associated with Phoenix in my mind.

Hazel is pretty enough but it'll almost definitely be shortened to Haze which I'm not keen on.

I love Rowan - it's a really pretty name (and is also the name of my friend's 12 year old who is one of the most charismatic, kindest and most beautiful girls I've ever met so all good associations!).

Other suggestions - Cora, Cara, Erin, Eden, Thea, Aspen, Robyn, Merryn?

Onelife2024 · 19/02/2024 07:04

I love Hazel. Rowan is quite nice, although I associate it more with boys. River I definitely associate with boys. I’m not keen on Mavis.

It sounds like you like nature names? How about

Wren
Willow
Amber
Summer
Fern
Laurel
Robyn
Saffron
Savannah
Skye
