Oh Saffron is a lovely suggestion!

I also love Seren but I'm not sure if you need a Welsh connection? Also Niamh but again I think you'd need to have some form of Irish connection.

FlutteryButterfly · 19/02/2024 07:24

Rowan and Hazel are lovely. I teach and Rowan is used equally between boys and girls

Other suggestions-

Aspen
Briar
Laurel
Cassia

Not really too sure on your choices but if you like them then go for them.. instead of Mavis what about Maeve or Maeva? Both so pretty.

a couple others

Noa
Bodhi

Hazel is lovely.
Mavis and River are awful.
Rowan is a boy's name in my experience.

Yes, Seren is a great idea!

Mavis is dreadful. It feels like a name a future teenager will hate you for. Maeve and Maeva are nicer.

I don’t like Hazel at all, although it seems quite popular now.

The other two are ok.

Suchardchoccy · 19/02/2024 10:02

I like River.

It reminds me of River Song from doctor who 😂

Scottyme · 19/02/2024 11:21

River and Rowan are boys names to me and Mavis - do you not like your baby already? Hazel is not my cup of tea but it's the best from your list

BoleynMemories13 · 19/02/2024 11:45

Hazel is lovely.

I know River and Rowan are technically unisex but I only know boys with these names and prefer them for boys.

Mavis is dreadful. Old lady frumpy, rather than old lady chic.

109% Hazel

Rowan and Hazel are lovely. River seems a bit trendy and overused at the moment and Mavis is just no - I know some fantastic Mavis's but they are all over 70.

But that is exactly when names start to come back. Like Ruby, Mabel, Isla, George, etc.

Not all old fashioned names come back in fashion though. I don't think the class registers in five years time are going to be full of Doreens, Mavis, Janices, Lindas and Barbaras. (I could be wrong though!)

Catsinaflat · 19/02/2024 12:39

Would Rowena work instead of Rowan?

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 19/02/2024 12:44

I love Hazel and think Mavis is due a comeback - it's so close to Maeve which is popular, so I really don't understand the dislike. I can picture a cool young Mavis.

River and Rowan are a totally different vibe - technically unisex (I know a boy and a girl of each) but I prefer them for boys and think of them as boys names.

You will be wrong. Who foresaw Leonard and Theodora/e coming back? Or Amy?

LoveAHamSandwhich · 19/02/2024 13:28

I've already met a young Nora. Not a name I saw coming back.

PurpleChrayn · 19/02/2024 13:58

Rowan = sad beige baby of try-hard middle-class parents.

River = same.

Hazel = it's ok.

Mavis = not one of the granny names that merits resurrecting.

So we found out on Friday we are having a baby girl 🩷🎀🌸🩰 so all weekend we have been thinking of names, we both really like Roma but are struggling to find middle names that flow well with it, does anyone have any suggestions? 🥰

tryingtogetinshape · 19/02/2024 14:36

You're going to call your child Roma? Seriously?

I really like Hazel. I only like Rowan for boys. River wouldn't be my choice but I wouldn't think anything bad if I met a child called that. I would raise an eyebrow at Mavis but tbh I don't see why it's worse than Maeve which is really popular.

FayCarew · 19/02/2024 14:52

Rowan - quite nice but Rowan and Roman are popular for boys
River - dreadful
Mavis - don't like it. I also don't like Maeve, Mabel, Maya etc
Hazel - ok. Makes me think of an unremarkable sort of girl.

Westwindworries · 19/02/2024 15:05

In order:
Hazel (lovely)
Rowan
Mavis
River

Also love Maeve.

It is also an Italian name so doesn’t need to be spun with the negative you have posted thanks!

Sure. But I won't be the first, or last, to ask you/her "Oh, are you Romany?"

Interesting that you think being Romany is a negative...
