What do you think? Is it Ouch cool, or bridge-player with her specs 'round her neck.

I'm just wondering, cos I have little to think about, whether or not the new bbc programme make it chavy? Or, would the people who take their inspiration from tv not touch a name like Nancy. I think it's quite cool; in a Lois/Margot kind of way.

Colin is awful. It's just so dull. I am in Ireland and here we have Colms and Calums too. Geeky gadget-loving men who laugh at their own jokes and down load The Lord of the Rings off the internet and watch it over and over are called Colin. Or Owen.

It's funny how names have such stereotypes in the UK. It really isn't much of an issue in the US.

dizzychixies · 22/03/2008 14:25

we're all snobs!

VictorianPASqualor · 22/03/2008 14:28

I read a book once where people that weren't as rich were called Nancys, can't remember why, I think it was from N.C's or something, But I can't even remember what the N.c stood for.

So actually that's not important at all, ignore me.

VictorianPASqualor · 22/03/2008 14:28

Oh, actually I think it was something like No Class.

MadameCh0let · 22/03/2008 14:34

I've seen names like Brian, Trevor, Malcolm and Gavin being discussed seriously for babies on the US boards.

Are you American living in UK? I want to got to America call my dd "Jemima" out loud. Just to cause a scene.

David Cameron's daughter is called Nancy.

dizzychixies · 22/03/2008 14:44

oh, gone right off it now - red light running pillock that he is

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 22/03/2008 14:46

I think there's a Nancy in 'Silas Marner'. I remember my GCSE English teacher, mid-monologue, bellowing Nancy? What a sappy name? Who'd call their child Nancy? Then he looked round and clocked my mortified classmate, Nancy, and shut up sharpish.

Having said that I like it.

Prefer Pansy. Like Violet even better though .

UnderRated · 22/03/2008 15:06

I am a Brit living in the US.

I told my mum that if my DC was a boy, we'd call him Trevor. We were just teasing but she was rather

I know a couple of little Brians and Gavins. And Kevin too. One of DS's good friends is Betty.

I thought it was very chic

brimfull · 22/03/2008 17:29

It has connotations of middle aged american to me.

lentengrrl · 22/03/2008 17:29

not ouch cool at all, but very nice. I like Nan as well.

artichokes · 22/03/2008 17:29

I like it. But is has been a bit tarnished in my mind since I realised David Cameron had chosen it for his DD. That takes some of the cool edge of it for me!

nancy75 · 22/03/2008 17:38

and whenever you tell someone your name for something official/over the phone they always think its natalie and you've said your own name wrong

ok rant over!

MadameCh0let · 22/03/2008 17:40

Yeah but you're 32(?). I'd think that a 32 yr old might be from China, originally called Nan Xiu and were trying to assimilate.

They say 1 in four people is chinese. So there must be a good few on this thread, Nan Xiu.
