AIBU for feeling very very sorry that I called my son common chavvy name?

I know this isnt AIBU - but it is names!!!

My son is 8 so I dont know why this is suddenly playing on my mind now so much.

I always loved his name from years ago and it really suits him - (Its the very very common 'J' name)- but I really regret giving him such a common name. There are just boys everywhere with the same name. Wherever we are we hear parents shouting out the name. And Im worried its going to affect him when he's older.

(Im only saying its chavvy cos thats what a few people on ehre have said about it in other threads.)

Anyone else REALLY regret the name they've given their child. And does it really really matter.

when i chose dd's name, i made a point of not choosing anything in the top 10.

nappyaddict · 20/03/2008 13:45

do you mean his name is J, or that it begins with J?

lljkk · 20/03/2008 13:46

Jack? People say ds3's name is either A) chavvy or B)ultra posh how can it be both? Sod the critix does ur son like his own name? That matters most.

kizzie · 20/03/2008 13:47

In my class at school there were 3 other girls with the same name (so four of us in one class). We found it funny. It did not affect negatively at all.

Joshua is a lovely name. I can't see what you are worrying about.

queenofthedumbquestion · 20/03/2008 13:50

I think Josh is lovely and not at all common or chavvy. I don't know any Joshs, although my mum was going to call me it. Had I been a boy

misdee · 20/03/2008 13:50

now Josh i like. i dont think its chavvy at all.

I am not a jack fan though.

I am in a pickle, was playign with names the other night, and dh and I both lik the name katie, buts its getting v v v popular again. which goes against my usual no popular names thing lol.

TheAntiFlounce · 20/03/2008 13:50

Josh isn't chavvy. It's common in that a lot of children are called Josh!

chickytwotimes · 20/03/2008 13:51

I don't think josh is chavvy at all. And trust me, I live in a very chavvy area and there are no joshes to be found.

WanderingTrolley · 20/03/2008 13:53

Josh not a chavvy name.

misdee you need an unusual diminutive of Catherine. Or just have a boy and you won't have to think about it again until dc5 or 6

Psychomum5 · 20/03/2008 13:54

oh I love the name Joshua, and would have used it for one of my sons only a good friend nabbed it first!!!

I now have a Jacob, and that seems equally as common now too, as do ALL J names don;t you find.

there are many....

Joshua
Jacob
Jenson
Jessica
Josie
Jake
Jade
Jezz
Jamie
James

all at my DS's school at the mo.

belgo · 20/03/2008 13:57

Josh isn't chavvy at all. It's a very nice name.

taipo · 20/03/2008 13:57

I thought you were going to Jayden too.

Josh not chavvy imo

lljkk · 20/03/2008 13:58
PotPourri · 20/03/2008 13:58

Well I think it is a lovely name, and you should not worry about what other people think. honestly, it is a beautiful name

scorpio1 · 20/03/2008 14:00

Josh/ Joshua is lovely, not chavvy!

We have a Jamie, i love J names!

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/03/2008 14:00

Another one who thought you must mean Jayden!
Josh is a fine name, and despite being statistically common, I only know one.

kizzie · 20/03/2008 14:00

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah youve all made me feel better about it. He's such a funny wodnerful little thing that hopefully even if he's surrounded by boys and men with the same name he'll make his own mark!

What about Kate (rather than Katie.) Or Kitty - I love Kitty but know some people hate it.

dizzychixies · 20/03/2008 14:02

josh is a lovely name and so it kitty but would be more inclined to use it as a nickname rather than a full name - just my opinion though!

taipo · 20/03/2008 14:02

I like Kate. It was my grandmother's name and she was also called Kitty.

Kindersurpise · 20/03/2008 14:04

Josh is absolutely not chavvy. Lovely name.

Katie reminds me of Katie Price, but probably only because I don't know any other Katies.

I love Catherine and all variations. Caterina, Catriona, Katharina, Caitlin.

unknownrebelbang · 20/03/2008 14:05

If you like his name, then why worry what anyone else thinks?

totalmisfit · 20/03/2008 14:08

joshua was on my list when i was pg. it's a great name, timeless and biblical. i don't think the fact that it is common will affect him. just think back to when you were at school. how many Johns and Daniels and Christophers and Matthews were there? But they were all unique individuals and it never seemed to bother them, did it? If you think of pretty much all the most successful and famous men over the past 20 years they tend to have quite 'common' names which they make their own. Off the top of my head I'm thinking David Beckham, Jack Black, Johnny Depp etc...
