AIBU for feeling very very sorry that I called my son common chavvy name?

kizzie · 20/03/2008 13:42

I know this isnt AIBU - but it is names!!!

My son is 8 so I dont know why this is suddenly playing on my mind now so much.

I always loved his name from years ago and it really suits him - (Its the very very common 'J' name)- but I really regret giving him such a common name. There are just boys everywhere with the same name. Wherever we are we hear parents shouting out the name. And Im worried its going to affect him when he's older.

(Im only saying its chavvy cos thats what a few people on ehre have said about it in other threads.)

Anyone else REALLY regret the name they've given their child. And does it really really matter.

Yes i know you're all right. I dont usually really care what people think but just didnt want him to be 'categorised' for having parents with no imagination!!!!!

I know a very beautiful elegant girl called Cat (not Kat)

I have a Josh, he is 5. I loved the name when I was pregnant but did worry about how popular it was. When he was born we called him Sebastion for 2 days and it didn't feel right - he was really a Josh!

I ove it and don't care what others think.

DrNortherner · 20/03/2008 14:25

Btw I'm a Debbie - there are tonnes of us around. It's never bothered me!

captainmummy · 20/03/2008 14:28

Joshua is nice, but vvv common at the mo. So is James/Jamie and Jack... we'll be onto K names soon. (BTW Katie is also vvv comon round here.- I mean popularcommon, not chavcommon.)

bozza · 20/03/2008 14:30

I think it is a nice name. And if you named him 8 years ago maybe you were the trendsetters.....

kizzie · 20/03/2008 17:35

Thanks Captainmummy - bringing me crashing back down to earth

You are right though !

He is gorgeous though - so maybe he'll just be the most gorgeous Josh in the world - as opposed to the most gorgeous Tarquin.

Another one who doesn't think Josh is chavvy

But from some of the responses can I assume a lot of people think Jayden is?

Milliways · 20/03/2008 17:42

When you were listing all the "J" names, I couldn't help but think about that Duggar family who have 17 kids all beginning with J

The children ? all with names beginning with ?J? ? range in age from 19-year-old Joshua to Jennifer. In between are nine more boys and six girls: John-David, Jill, Jessa, Jinger, Joseph, Josiah, Joy-Anna, Jedidiah, Jeremiah, Jason, James, Justin, Jackson and Johannah.

DeeRiguer · 20/03/2008 17:48

tis lovely name
enjoy your josh..

littlegreyrabbit · 20/03/2008 17:51

I don't think there's anything wrong with a Josh but I know exactly what you mean about regreting a name. In fact I tried to start a thread about this a week or 2 ago - no replies!

Ds2(9) is also called a very common name and I am really upset that I didn't stand up for the name I wanted. His name was both dh and my second choice but the only one we agreed on so I always feel that poor ds2 got a 'that'll do' type name instead of an unusual lovely name as ds1 has. The more I hear other people use it the less I like it. It doesn't 'match' our surname or ds1's name.

I know it's ridiculous. We couldn't change it even if we tried.

I have to tell yself ds2 would still be his gorgeous, cheeky beautiful self whatever he was called

CrackerOfNuts · 20/03/2008 17:53

IMO it is a person themselves that are chavvy not their name.

seeker · 20/03/2008 17:56

I think Josh is a great name. The thing to remember, even if it is quite popular that there are LOT of children in the country, so even the common names are't all that common, if you see what I mean. Ds's school has 420 children, and I think there are only 2 Joshs - or maybe 3.

I think Kate's a nice name (I'm a Kate, so I'm biassed) but I don't specially like Kitty. With all these names, i do think it's a really good idea to call the child Catherine officially, then she can be Kate, Kitty, Kat,Kit Cathy, Cath - whatever suits her and she likes.

Blu · 20/03/2008 17:56

Josh is a lovely name.

It has become v popular, but that doesn't make it any less lovely.

scottishmummy · 20/03/2008 18:02

do you ask strangers opinions of your shoes -unlikely.so why get in a fakle what other's think of your ds name.

nope, because classy and sophisticated to one parent = chavvy to another

why worry, i wouldn't

shelleylou · 20/03/2008 18:03

Theres nothing wrong with josh. Its a great name and has a lovely meaning. Then again my ds is a Josh. Sometimes think that i should have called him Joshua instead

Niecie · 20/03/2008 18:13

Josh is a great name - we toyed with long before DSs were born but DH brother got there first.

Yes it is very common at the moment, but it is only obvious whilst he is at school iwth lots of other boys of the same age. It won't matter so much when DS is grown up because he will be mixing with people of all ages so there won't necessarily be dozens of Josh's around.

I have a J named boy - a Jacob. Apparently very popular in the US but we don't know any others here - agree J names are great.

I like the name Katie too but agree it would be nice to use Catherine. For some reason I prefer it with a C than a K. Don't know why though.

theowlwhowasafraidofthedark · 20/03/2008 18:15

Josh is lovely

CrushWithEyeliner · 20/03/2008 18:32

Josh is not chavvy AT ALL a- thought you meant Jack at first....

AbbeyA · 20/03/2008 18:42

I like Josh and Jack. I think that Kitty should be short for something to give the choice. The Kitty that I know is just that(with no second name)-I can't help thinking of Kitty Cat!

cherrylips · 21/03/2008 19:53

I also think Joshua/Josh is a lovely name, not chavvy at all. I do not know any in my son's peer group, so not that common either. I LOVE Kitty as a short name for Katherine, Catriona, or Caitlin!!

sandyballs · 21/03/2008 19:56

I don't know anyone at all called Josh, so it can't be that popular, at least not round here. I love it.

chankins · 21/03/2008 20:01

I only know one joshua and don't think itis chavvy. I inadvertently named all my 3 dc with very popular names, some of which have been called chavvy on mn before - but I loved the names for years before I became a mum, so why let it bother you ? If you like it thats all that matters. If a name becomes common surely it just means you have good taste ?

What is with you people?

Chavvy, posh, working, whatever.

It's a name.

It's either dumb or made up or not.

Remotew · 21/03/2008 20:07

I dont like the middle name I chose 14 years ago for my daughter. It seems so chavvy now and its a J name. Its only a middle name so no worries really and she can change or drop it. Josh was quite posh at one time and its because its popular that you think it is common
