AIBU for feeling very very sorry that I called my son common chavvy name?

I know this isnt AIBU - but it is names!!!

My son is 8 so I dont know why this is suddenly playing on my mind now so much.

I always loved his name from years ago and it really suits him - (Its the very very common 'J' name)- but I really regret giving him such a common name. There are just boys everywhere with the same name. Wherever we are we hear parents shouting out the name. And Im worried its going to affect him when he's older.

(Im only saying its chavvy cos thats what a few people on ehre have said about it in other threads.)

Anyone else REALLY regret the name they've given their child. And does it really really matter.

Is it Jade, AboutEve? If so, it's a pretty name and it's really not your fault that hoards of chavs have adopted it since.

Choccyrockyhorse (Hope you dont mind me calling you that) Yes it is, I loved it at the time but picked it for a middle.

No matter what you call your DC's by teenage years it gets adapted by their mates. Its funny but there are so many lovely names around but I look at my DD and cannot think of any other name she would suit.

Again to the OP Josh is still Posh and if my DD met a boy called Josh I'd be impressed .

josh is biblical - and IMHO biblical names cannot be chavvy.

ChocolateRockingHorse · 21/03/2008 20:37

Will Smith's son is called Jayden though and they're not chavvy..

hatwoman · 21/03/2008 20:38

a. it's not chavvy
b. people transcend their names - I know educated utterly un-chavvy Sharons and Tracys, for example. and what about Kevin McCloud? your ds will be who he's going to be. It's him and his upbringing that will be improtant - not his name.

I think we need to start distinguishing between getting common as in popular and chavvy. Not necessarily the same. Josh and Jack are very common I think but no way chavvy.

halogen · 21/03/2008 21:45

Josh is a really nice name and not in the least chavvy. I'm another who thought you meant Jayden or similar.

And I went to school with an insanely posh Sharon. Your name doesn't matter apart from hopefully liking it, it's what you make of it.

carmenelectra · 21/03/2008 21:53

I agree that the J names all seem very popular, but they do sound nice too! I do like Josh and on a young man it will sound lovely! Its so not chavvy.

DP wanted Josh or Jacob(which i must admit i do like a lot) but was worried that they were too popular. Dp argued that if you thought that way you would never pick any names. Anyway, eventually, i picked my fave J name and went with Jonah, which i dont regret, but have had mixed opinions!

staryeyed · 22/03/2008 12:52

Josh is a lovely name.

The stupid thing is if a name is nice it becomes popular and the more popular it becomes people say its chavvy. Its not, its a very popular name and lots of people obviously like the name you chose or it would not be so popular. Ignore the name snobs.

AHLH · 26/03/2008 12:07

Since when has Josh been chavvy. I thought you meant Jason!

Nancy66 · 26/03/2008 12:18

Josh is a great name. It's popular - but popular and chav are not the same thing.

When I hear 'Josh' I get a picture in my mind of a very good looking, fun, likeable guy - what more could you ask? !

wishfort · 30/03/2008 11:45

Josh has been around in Australia for slightly longer, so I've encountered late teen and adult Joshes. All lovely.

Not chavvy - and downunder is the home of chavtastic names.

Jacanne · 30/03/2008 12:00

I don't think Josh is chavy, or Jason or Jack for that matter - I will have to go with Jayden being a bit chavtastic though..

MissMandy · 01/04/2008 17:10

Josh is a perfectly acceptable name- not one of my favourites but nice all the same. I agree that "J" names do seem popular atm, but I think they've always been fairly widely used, and they certainly don't have to be "common." I grew up living next door to a Josh, one of my best friends since childhood is a Jack, went to school with a Jade, one of my sisters-in-law is a Jennifer (Jenny) and Dh and I have a Jamie,so I can't help but love them

You've got nothing to worry about with Josh, it's a million miles from chavvy!
