What do you think of these two? Too mumsy or time for a revival?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
mummyh2016 · 27/01/2024 11:40

I'd say Claire is too mumsy, I do know a couple of baby Clara's though?
Laura probably still mumsy but less so than Claire imo.

Tulipvase · 27/01/2024 11:40

Personally I prefer Clare, not Claire.

cakebytheoceon · 27/01/2024 11:40

Both very dated sorry

Beamur · 27/01/2024 11:41

I think Laura is usable but Claire/Clare/Clair not yet.

Sanguinello · 27/01/2024 11:42

Both very nice.

GintyMcGinty · 27/01/2024 11:43

Both are lovely.

I also like Lauren and Lauryn.

JoelleLindaLucinda · 27/01/2024 11:43

Just posted out of interest. Not seriously considering them but think they're both nice. Heard a woman calling her daughter at the park and thought she was saying Laura, and thought bloody hell haven't heard that name in a while, nice. But turned out it was something like Alora.

I prefer Claire to Laura, I think it’s pretty.

someone I know had a baby lauren - you don’t hear of many baby Lauren’s these days

ColdButSunny · 27/01/2024 11:46

I like Laura a lot, but Claire seems dated to me.

Inkypot · 27/01/2024 11:48

I think it's interesting how people say it's too soon but then who gets to decide when it is time? Someone has to start it. I really like Laura now. Less fond of it as a child but it's grown on me over the years (yes that's potentially outing) Clare/Claire I do like but prefer Laura out of the two.

MaloneMeadow · 27/01/2024 11:49

Dull, dreary & boring. Dated and don’t need a comeback any time soon

Lou670 · 27/01/2024 11:49

I have a Laura who is in her twenties now. I love it as it is quite uncommon nowadays.

forcedfun · 27/01/2024 11:51

I think they are both understated and lovely. They were overused for a bit but I am sure they will come back into fashion

ChanelNo19EDT · 27/01/2024 11:52

I think Claire is more dated than Laura. They're both nice names imo
I prefer Clara to Claire
Louise to Louise
Julia to Julie and so on but that's just my reaction to over exposure! classmates, friends, colleagues et c with these names

fightingthedogforadonut · 27/01/2024 12:08

I'm the generation where every other girl at school was called Claire, so to me it's a very overused and dull name.

Laura is lovely though.

Onelife2024 · 27/01/2024 12:18

Love both! I think they sound lovely for this new generation. Clara and Lara are nice, modern alternatives if you prefer.

gooseberrystrudella · 27/01/2024 12:21

I like the name Laura, understated elegance. I have noticed names like Alayla, Alya, Alara, Aliya, Alora etc are popular with the younger generation when naming their LOs.

NachosAndCheese · 27/01/2024 12:29

There’s a Laura at my DC’s primary school. It makes a change from the endless Evies, Avas, Amelias and Olivias.

Lunabetty · 27/01/2024 12:31

Both quite dated, imo

CreateHope · 27/01/2024 12:32

Love the idea that Claire is dated when we have schools full of Ethels, Bettys, Ediths & Constances 😂

InTheRainOnATrain · 27/01/2024 12:35

There was loads of little Claires around DD’s age when we lived in the US. She’s 6 now. So it’s already having/had a comeback there! Most were families with Irish ancestry.

DuchessOfSausage · 27/01/2024 12:45

Both are fine but Clare doesn't sound great in some accents.
I really don't like Clara or Lauren, Elora, Alora etc

Laura is lovely and a classic, works internationally if you don't mind the 'ow' pronunciation of au.

@CreateHope , if you were born in the 1970s you would probably have been in the same class as several Clare/Claires.

JoelleLindaLucinda · 27/01/2024 13:02

@CreateHope good bloody point

lioneggs · 27/01/2024 13:09

I know a couple of baby Lauras, Claire feels abit dated but I don't hate it. Susie is around a lot atm

CreateHope · 27/01/2024 13:11

@DuchessOfSausage I can go one better than that - I was one of those Claires 😂
