What do you think of these two? Too mumsy or time for a revival?

OP posts:

CreateHope · 27/01/2024 13:12

Still doesn’t make it more dated than Ethel or Betty 😄

Lampzade · 27/01/2024 13:12

What about Clara?

cantbecaught · 27/01/2024 13:14

Clara is a completely different name from Claire as Clara is very much of current times and Claire is not. That is what OP was asking.

19ThanhAlice19 · 27/01/2024 13:24

I think of Clara as a bit trendy atm as its quite popular whereas Claire is the name of girls born in the 80s so in that sense it is quite mummsy.

Laura same thing. I think mumsy names like Claire, Louise etc are being remixed for a fresh touch which is why names like Clara and Eloise are so much more popular, give it 30 years Clara and Eloise will be the mumsy ones!

HumerousHumous · 27/01/2024 13:25

Love 'Laura' because it reminds me of cute little Laura Ingalls in Little House on The Prairie. Claire is cool, really great name too. Laura Claire (surname)...

Vigility · 27/01/2024 13:39

Claire is soo dull.

Laura is better.

Love the idea that Claire is dated when we have schools full of Ethels, Bettys, Ediths & Constances 😂

Which are equally awful but each to their own!!

MyopicBunny · 27/01/2024 16:18

Laura is very nice. One of my DD's has Clare as her middle name which was after my best friend at school.

Exactly! 15 years ago nobody would have dreamed of using Ivy and look how that boomed.

I really don't understand the comments that names such as Laura and Claire are somehow outdated or overdone. In the sea of Avas, Evies, Olivias (all perfectly lovely names btw), I find the 70s/80s/90s names refreshing. Names, like fashion, come in cycles. But why must we pick names that are on trend? A name may become popular again sooner than you expected or not at all. Ultimately, whatever name you give your baby will become your favourite name the whole world. Other people can like it or sod off.

89redballoons · 27/01/2024 20:31

I really like Laura. It would have been on my list for a girl but I have a Lawrence/Laurie.

WindTheMummyUpWindHerBackAgain · 27/01/2024 20:37

As someone with a name that was ‘dated’ when I was born I’d say don’t do it. I’m 35 and my name is of my parents generation - think something like Joyce, Barbara or Linda. All my life when people have heard my name they’ve expected someone 30 years older. While it is a nice enough name I always wished I had a more modern name similar to my school friends.

Lou670 · 27/01/2024 21:54

@HumerousHumous That is who I named my Laura after! Laura from Little house on the prairie!

theduchessofspork · 27/01/2024 22:46

They are both nice - they won’t sound dated to her peers and they are classic names anyways

  • I’d go with Clare because there are so many Lara/Lola/Lyra/lena/luna/Leila names about Lauea won’t really stand out
Pemba · 27/01/2024 23:05

Really nice names. I prefer Claire/Clare to the currently fashionable Clara actually.

I like the name Laura, understated elegance. I have noticed names like Alayla, Alya, Alara, Aliya, Alora etc are popular with the younger generation when naming their LOs.

Those names are all horrendous and I have never ever heard of any of them before (actually I have met an Alya at work now I think of it but not the others). I'll tell my 38 year old friend Laura and my 21 year old student with the same name that their names are old hat and boring and mumsy!!!

Icouldseetinsel · 28/01/2024 03:15

I think Laura is really beautiful and classic.
But I must admit I don't like Claire. Altho I know some lovely Claires in real life! I do think it's quite a dated name but not enough to be vintage... just sounds like someone middle aged who works in your office you know!

MariaVT65 · 28/01/2024 03:24

Both fine and refreshing. I honestly don’t understand what the problem is with ‘dated’. My DS had a girl at his childminder called Aspen.

I have a PhD student called Aspen. She's 23.

Beyondbeyondbeyond · 28/01/2024 10:36

Love both names. Classic and beautiful.

ChanelNo19EDT · 28/01/2024 10:40

Aspen is more "American" than "Dated"

Like Val d'Isère or Chamonix

chesterlestreet · 28/01/2024 10:40

@DuchessOfSausage you are right about accents my Liverpudlian Uncle calls his lovely daughter Cluur rather than Claire

🤣 Meribel would be acceptable though no? Mirabelle is actually a name, so just an alternate spelling haha

EverleighMay · 28/01/2024 11:15

I hate the name Laura but love Claire, I think that's a fairly timeless classic name. Came across a few different spellings over the years"-

Claire
Clare
Clair
Clayre

Pemba · 28/01/2024 11:17

Well they're both classic, obviously.
