I love this name so much and want to name our baby, due in a few weeks, this.
My DH says it's a beautiful name but he doesn't want to use it as uts 'political'.
I think that's nonsense because it's a very old name of a goddess and also of one of the moons of Jupiter. Yes people might also associate it with Europe the geographical area but I do not see the problem there either as girls get named things like Asia, America and Ireland for example. What's the difference?
He says it's contentious because of the referendum in the UK but I honestly don't see how that is an issue. Europe as a geographical area has existed for a long time its not just a political union. And surely people will not still be up in arms about the referendum when my daughter is an adult? I think it's a silly reason not to use this beautiful name.
We are both agreed we want a space/heavens themed names. He has been suggesting the names of other moons. But not only is Europa a beautiful name I think it's one of the most beautiful moons too.. covered in ocean.
Do people really think Europa is a 'politically charged' name?

It sounds like a brand name to me and is just weird.

But yes these days people would think you were making a Remain statement.

You can’t use it anyway as your husband doesn’t like it, but he’s right not to, find something else.

Ursula
Athena
Diana
Paloma
Artemisia
Olympia
etcetera

itsannie86 · 18/01/2024 11:17

It's a silly name, sorry.

Thulpelly · 18/01/2024 11:31

No, come on.

Heckythump1 · 18/01/2024 11:55

Sounds like a hotel or a holiday park. Don't do it OP!

Doublethecookies · 18/01/2024 18:10

@mathanxiety one of those is the name DH Wantage but I googled it and a thread on here came up and people were going nuts.. someone even said they'd report the parents to SS if they met a child with that name!!

It's utterly dreadful.

Holiday park or hotel.

Wearegettingfedup · 18/01/2024 18:29

Terrible name…sorry . Thought is was a car hire company.

Scottyme · 18/01/2024 20:00

Oh your the Hi Ho mother! Please please for the child's sake wait until your hormones calm down a bit before naming her

Doublethecookies · 18/01/2024 20:39

@Scottyme
My DH can't blame hormones, that was his top name choice!!

It sounds like some sort of corporate name/hotel/holiday site. Honestly it is horrid - and if your OH does not like it then it cannot be. You could perhaps stick it in as a middle name - but be careful of middle names starting with a vowel - they can spell some unexpected words!

What would people shorten it to? - Euro!!??

SadSack10 · 18/01/2024 20:44

It’s an awful name for a child.

ArnieLinson · 18/01/2024 20:45

Isnt the joke it is the sound you make when you throw up?

orangeblosssom · 18/01/2024 22:22

I think your husband might be right.

Soph360 · 28/03/2024 11:43

She would be sharing her name with the web portal of the European Commission =>>> https://european-union.europa.eu/index_en

OR https://competition-policy.ec.europa.eu/index_en

It is a nice name, but it has been politicised, and hence you have to consider - as with any other name - the impact on your child.

Sashamalia · 29/03/2024 20:44

It's a very unusual name , but if you like it, you like it.

Sashamalia · 29/03/2024 20:49

What are the names of the other moons?

Soph360 · 30/03/2024 05:27

You could also use it as a middle name. That way your daughter would have the option to choose how she wants to use the name herself.

WalkingaroundJardine · 30/03/2024 06:10

I am going against the grain - I do like it and by itself it is pretty. I work at a school though and we see all sorts of names. It wouldn’t be that unusual and she probably wouldn’t get teased at our school but we do have a very diverse cohort. So I would take where you lived in consideration and whether the locals would bat an eyelid. If you lived in an area with a lot more people with UK ancestral backgrounds she would have a harder time for sure.

NotAVampire · 30/03/2024 06:17

Of all the “names” which are not names, this one is right up there.

Europa is not a name for a child or an adult human. It just isn’t.

Danfromdownunder · 30/03/2024 06:20

This is a hideously selfish thing to hang on a child in the quest to be noice, different, unuwshewal.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 30/03/2024 06:44

Sounds like a cruise ship.

RobertaFirmino · 31/03/2024 00:56

All these ridiculous names...honestly, what's wrong with good old fashioned Barbara or Jean?
