I love this name so much and want to name our baby, due in a few weeks, this.
My DH says it's a beautiful name but he doesn't want to use it as uts 'political'.
I think that's nonsense because it's a very old name of a goddess and also of one of the moons of Jupiter. Yes people might also associate it with Europe the geographical area but I do not see the problem there either as girls get named things like Asia, America and Ireland for example. What's the difference?
He says it's contentious because of the referendum in the UK but I honestly don't see how that is an issue. Europe as a geographical area has existed for a long time its not just a political union. And surely people will not still be up in arms about the referendum when my daughter is an adult? I think it's a silly reason not to use this beautiful name.
We are both agreed we want a space/heavens themed names. He has been suggesting the names of other moons. But not only is Europa a beautiful name I think it's one of the most beautiful moons too.. covered in ocean.
Do people really think Europa is a 'politically charged' name?

I don't think it's political in any way but it is the name of a ferry I've been on. It had a lovely indoor pool although it was a bit cold so lots of trips to the sauna to warm up. First swimming pool I've been to with a view over the front of a boat. MS Silja Europa - Wikipedia

She'll probably have Eureka! yelled at her a lot.

Also, do people still use the word Europe as a term for puking? That's something to be aware of.

HardcoreLadyType · 17/01/2024 21:50

I love it!

BodyKeepingScore · 17/01/2024 21:50

Name of the most bombed hotel in Europa. It's in Belfast.

RainsweptAndUninteresting · 17/01/2024 21:52

Oh don't be silly !

RainsweptAndUninteresting · 17/01/2024 21:53

Europa and Eureka if it's twins 😬

GrimDamnFanjo · 17/01/2024 21:54

Europa Park.

VeryQuaintIrene · 17/01/2024 21:56

@Doublethecookies

OK - you have got me really curious now about your own names. Are you called Jocasta and Oedipus by any chance? Agamemnon and Clytemnestra?

Fullofpudding · 17/01/2024 21:59

It's the name of my local trading estate!

aname1234 · 17/01/2024 22:02

It's a lovely name. My first thought was daring and powerful. Also, "my god, its full of stars!"

I am now so hoping for Agamemnon now!

murasaki · 17/01/2024 23:01

Isn't it the name for a car hire firm?

It is!

Europa Hotel Belfast. The most bombed hotel in Europe EVER during the troubles.

It's not a name I would call a child.

This came into my head too. Plus, it does not sound nice.

homezookeeper · 17/01/2024 23:59

It's the name of a swimming pool near me :(

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 17/01/2024 21:17

Think Alec Baldwin called his daughter Ireland 🤷🏼‍♀️

And she had a child called Holland, to continue the theme. If OP wanted more Europe-related suggestions.

Hazil · 18/01/2024 00:07

If your DH dislikes it, his reasons don’t actually matter. You guys need to find a name you both like. Yes it is very difficult and neither of you will end up with your favourite name. The same will happen with a billion other marital life choices too…

(And if I met someone called Europa, or America, or Asia, or India, my first thought would be man what a dumb name.)

Doublethecookies · 18/01/2024 00:17

His favourite name is actually much more out there imo... I don't dislike it but I'm a bit worried it's too extra. I looked it up on here and it got far more violently slated than Europa..
I do like it that he likes it so much though.. I guess whatever you name a child someone will have an issue with it. And as I said we all have quite unusual names in our family.. my other children too however a bit less unusual than europa or the name my husband has chosen

Europe Hotel here too.

I think the possibility of the nickname Ropey would be offputting..
There are nicer names of Greek origin imo.

Charis
Eirene
Io
Hera

Bigearringsbigsmile · 18/01/2024 00:35

It's the name of an industrial estate near me

Freshpinkroses · 18/01/2024 00:35

Sorry I'm not a fan. It reminds me of Europcar.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 18/01/2024 00:37

The nickname potential for this is immense.

She’d get called “Package holiday”and if you countered with “it’s a moon, actually” she’d get called “your anus”

angsanana · 18/01/2024 07:00

Sounds like a car hire company or budget hotel name

carpingdeum · 18/01/2024 07:20

It's the name a visiting alien might give themself to blend in. Like Ford Prefect
