I love this name so much and want to name our baby, due in a few weeks, this.
My DH says it's a beautiful name but he doesn't want to use it as uts 'political'.
I think that's nonsense because it's a very old name of a goddess and also of one of the moons of Jupiter. Yes people might also associate it with Europe the geographical area but I do not see the problem there either as girls get named things like Asia, America and Ireland for example. What's the difference?
He says it's contentious because of the referendum in the UK but I honestly don't see how that is an issue. Europe as a geographical area has existed for a long time its not just a political union. And surely people will not still be up in arms about the referendum when my daughter is an adult? I think it's a silly reason not to use this beautiful name.
We are both agreed we want a space/heavens themed names. He has been suggesting the names of other moons. But not only is Europa a beautiful name I think it's one of the most beautiful moons too.. covered in ocean.
Do people really think Europa is a 'politically charged' name?

It's not a car hire firm, but I do rather like Avis or Budget as alternative names.

VestPantsandSocks · 17/01/2024 20:43

Just consider that the nickname for Europa might be........Euro 😂

Flippinec · 17/01/2024 20:44

I'm hoping Liverpool are going to win the Europa this year.

It's a football tournament not a name, in my mind

Doublethecookies · 17/01/2024 20:44

@MrSand I know you ate taking the piss but my son is genuinely friends with a boy called Avis!!!

I think she would be teased as a teenager “your a raper!!

Viewfrommyhouse · 17/01/2024 20:54

It's the name of an old Lotus car. No.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 17/01/2024 20:59

I think it could be seen as political but my main issue is it isn’t nice sounding. And as mentioned it’s attached to businesses and competitions.

hotpotlover · 17/01/2024 21:02

"Europa" literally just means "Europe" in German (my mother tongue).

I would assume you named her after the continent.

I wouldn't think of a goddess or one of the moons of Jupiter.

It really isn't a nice name.

And yes, it can be seen as a rather political name :)

Europa Centre Gran Canaria - dinna name your kid that.

Same

Me too.

spackleplumb · 17/01/2024 21:07

Callisto, Juno, Phoebe, Elara, Leda, Portia, Vega... all much nicer names (imo) than Europa. But this is your baby so it's up to you and your husband. I don't think it's necessarily intentionally politically charged but I would wonder and would also think the parents must be very into their football.

sonjadog · 17/01/2024 21:07

It sounds too much like a conference centre to me.

All2Well · 17/01/2024 21:08

Horrible. Rape, Car Hire, Terrorism and Football - lovely to saddle a child with. Not.

Poor kid. I'd really pity them.

itsmyp4rty · 17/01/2024 21:11

I just want to know who names their kids America or Ireland???

Europa is a terrible idea OP, people will either think you're obsessed with Brexit or obsessed with football. It also sounds like (and is) a hotel.

AnnaMagnani · 17/01/2024 21:15

It sounds either political or like a football tournament.

And in the Greek legend, Europa isn't a goddess, she's a princess who is abducted and raped by a bull.

Honestly, imagine finding out you were named after someone raped by a bull.

Ever heard of the very popular name Erin?

America is quite popular in Latinx communities, eg the actress America Ferrera.

Think Alec Baldwin called his daughter Ireland 🤷🏼‍♀️

Europa" literally just means "Europe" in German (my mother tongue)

Also in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese as well - likely hence why there are so many businesses that have the word in their name.

Europa Hotel Belfast. The most bombed hotel in Europe EVER during the troubles.

It's not a name I would call a child.

My first thought

Babyblackbear78 · 17/01/2024 21:31

Hideous name. So many bad connections to it. Please do not inflict this on your child,
Poor kid.

ilovepixie · 17/01/2024 21:36

Horrid name for a child, it's a lovely hotel though, does a cracking breakfast!

ilovepixie · 17/01/2024 21:38

If the baby was conceived in the Europa hotel then it would make a good story 😂😂

BitsAndBaubles · 17/01/2024 21:41

I used to live in Belfast so it reminds me I'd the Europa Hotel most bombed Hotel in Europe. Tourists would go and take their photo outside

RosesAndHellebores · 17/01/2024 21:44

It's bloody awful. There isn't even an argument to use it as a comparator to names like Horatio or Araminta which could pass at elite fee paying schools.

She will suffer and be teased. Please don't do it.
