Confusgurl · 03/01/2024 14:39

im expecting my first child a little girl and wondered what people thought to the name Caroline with the nickname ‘caggie’?

Middle name would be Mia, so Caroline ‘Caggie’ Mia. Or Caroline Mia. NOT double barrel can I add.

OP posts:

Caggie sounds almost exactly like cacky which is slang for shit/shitty as in “cacky pants” or “he’s cacking himself” and an unrepeatable slang word for a gay man.
Also sounds far too close to claggie. Would you like to be called claggie?
Just give your dd a nice name, like Caroline.

Agreed and 'cagar' is the equivalent of 'taking a shit' (slang) in Spanish so if there are any Spanish speakers about or she finds an affinity for the language it might be a bit weird. Obviously that's an outlying issue.

The Carolines I've known mostly have been Caro, Caz, Cazza or Carrie. I do love the full name and did have a friend Caggy in school (we are definitely not upper class) and I just accepted it as didn't speak Spanish in those days 😂

I love Caroline and like Carrie, Callie and Cassie but Caggie sounds a bit scraggy/raggy/claggy to me!

DiaNaranja · 03/01/2024 23:23

Caggie isn't a nice nickname... It sounds too similar to claggy and cacky, words to describe manky, grim stuff. And rhymes with "gag", for additional gross factor. As kids we actually used to refer to poo as "cack" and anything nasty would then be "cacky" (as in pooey, disgusting, vile), and it just reminds me of that. I just can't picture calling a sweet little baby)girl Caggie, and not wanting to gag.

Pemba · 04/01/2024 00:53

It's funny though, Maggie is very similar in sound, and yet that seems to be quite well liked on here?

(still dislike both Maggie and Caggie, personally. And Aggie. The sounds are very harsh).

AutumnColours9 · 04/01/2024 01:13

Mia Caroline is nice
Not keen on Caggy at all or Caroline. Too many back in the day with all the Traceys etc

Mardyybum · 04/01/2024 01:14

Love Caggie.
My auntie is called Carol and we’ve always called her Caggie!

Kokeshi123 · 04/01/2024 01:19

Cacky, Clacky, Claggy, baggy/saggy etc. OP, she won't use such a ridiculous nickname long-term, so don't call her Caroline unless you are fine with Caro, Carrie, Carol, Callie etc.

Caroline itself is fine, by the way.

HoHoHoliday · 04/01/2024 01:19

Echoing everyone else...

Caroline is lovely. Caggie is dreadful!
Baggy Caggie!

Caro, Carrie, Callie, pretty much any other nickname for Caroline is lovely. Even Cammie if you want a nickname that brings together Caroline and Mia. But Caggie is awful.

Caggie 😫 so unbelievably ugly, why would you inflict that on a lovely little girl? Sounds like aggy, claggy, baggie...not a nice sound at all.

This.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 04/01/2024 01:58

I've known Caroline's with nicknames Caro & Carly

Goldenretrievermum · 04/01/2024 01:58

Caggie is horrendous, why would you want to inflict that on your child. Sounds like claggy, or some sort of tropical disease!

ShakesP123 · 04/01/2024 08:38

Caroline sounds incredibly dated….screams 70s mum name to me. Or backwater texan, neither are great.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 04/01/2024 08:43

Caroline Mia is nice. I don’t like Caggie but I think it’s fine because it’s only a nickname. If she doesn’t like it when she’s older she doesn’t have to use it.

SallyWD · 04/01/2024 08:56

I like Carrie or Callie but Caggy sounds rather ugly to me!

2024andsobegins · 04/01/2024 09:04

All the Caroline’s I know are just Caroline. Why does she need a nickname?

Pemba · 04/01/2024 11:32

ShakesP123 · 04/01/2024 08:38

Or two queens of England? WTF are you talking about, it's a classic name.

AIstolemylunch · 04/01/2024 11:35

The Caroline I know gets called Caz. Caggie is awful, sorry.

AIstolemylunch · 04/01/2024 11:36

Also, of this is your first baby, you can't control what nicknames and shortenings they get at school, which will be completely different to what you imagined.

Wbeezer · 04/01/2024 11:37

Caggie sounds like the kind of family nickname that comes from a child or sibling not being able to say Caroline. Its kind of a one off, evolved rather than decided on in advance nickname.
Only cute if said by a lisping toddler, otherwise ugly

Couchant · 04/01/2024 11:38

Caggie sounds like something left in the loo after a flush. Just choose a name, OP. You don’t get to control nicknames.

smooze · 04/01/2024 11:45

I love Caggie. Funny how much people loathe it

AreolaGrande · 04/01/2024 11:51

Caggie is horrific.

Just such an thoroughly unpleasant and harsh sound.

With thousands of names at your disposal, I refuse to believe that anyone could look at a gorgeous cherubic little newborn and think "Yep she looks like a CAGGIE" 🤣

CurlewKate · 04/01/2024 11:53

Cathie is horrible. Carrie or Caro. Or even Caroline. Abbreviations aren't mandatory - unless you're Jilly Cooper.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 04/01/2024 11:58

Caroline is surely shortened to Carrie. Or Caz.
Caggie?

RosieBurdock · 04/01/2024 13:17

Caroline is lovely but I prefer Callie.
