Female version of Adam?

KM81 · 09/09/2023 10:43

We want to honour my BIL who’s no longer with us but struggling to think of how to use Adam as a girls (middle) name. I liked Ada but the family preference is to include Adam in its entirety. So far the only suggestions have been Adamina (hard no from me), Adama or Adamay.

Any thoughts or other suggestions please?

Could you do two middle names? So for example

Ada Marie
Ada Madeline
Ada Meredith

So the name Adam is there, but it isn't as obvious.

Bluestoat · 09/09/2023 10:54

Eve?

Fabulous idea. And Ada is lovely 😊

Eve is quite a good idea actually!!

I think Ada is nice and it does hook our him i think. Remember it's your baby so even if the family preference says it must include exactly Adam, you get to decide!!

FinnRussell · 09/09/2023 10:56

I came on to say Ada too and the middle name starting with M idea is genius. Ada is a lovely name.

Gnomegnomegnome · 09/09/2023 10:57

Adamine like Madeline or Adeline. NN Addy.

rentreenothanks · 09/09/2023 10:57

Honour him, not hook him!! Bloody auto correct

MolkosTeenageAngst · 09/09/2023 10:57

Will you try for more children? I would use Ada and then save Adam for if you ever have a boy in the future.

aSofaNearYou · 09/09/2023 10:57

I think you should use Ada. That's the obvious way of honouring him without having to use an out there, made up name which should be entirely your choice. Nicely, I think family are being a bit pushy and ungrateful not being content with Ada.

This is a good idea and a nice compromise (because your suggestions above are really quite bad!).

Or you could hyphenate, and have Ada-May I guess?

cherryassam · 09/09/2023 10:58

I like @Whinge‘s suggestion too.

If you think it has to be Adam in its entirety in one name, you could think about:

Adamine
Adamaris (Ada-Maris for pronunciation)
Adamary (Ada-Mary for pronunciation)

Or did your BiL have a middle name that might be easier to honour?

rentreenothanks · 09/09/2023 10:58

And yes Ada with middle name starting with m is a great idea!

TheMountainsCall · 09/09/2023 10:59

Female version of Adam would be Eve IMO - first man, first woman. But I'd either save the name for a son or go with something like Ada. I can't think of any way to feminise Adam that seems nice.

LaRevolution · 09/09/2023 10:59

Reverse it and have Mada? Usual spelling is Maida, if you like that - then it would still have Adam in it.

Thebigblueballoon · 09/09/2023 11:00

I wouldn’t try to force a name out of Adam - Adamina and Adama really don’t sound right.

I think Adeline is a lovely name. You could always merge the first and middle names eg Adeline Amelia, but that is quite convoluted! 😂

WAASOAR · 09/09/2023 11:10

I think depending on the first name you are choosing for your baby and what your surname is Adam is an ok name to just use as a girls middle name, but maybe give her a girls middle name too. The reason I think this is because Adams is also a surname. Said allowed to eg a doctors receptionist they would just assume the Adam/s middle name was a surname. I don’t think anyone would think it was unusual or strange. So, - first name-girls middle name- Adam/s- surname.
A middle name is hardly ever used, and even when she did use it I don’t see a problem with it.

DiscoBeat · 09/09/2023 11:10

I'm team Ada. Perhaps with an 'm' middle name? Not Mae!!

Canyousewcushions · 09/09/2023 11:11

Eden? It's not "adam" but it is a female name that sounds similar and has origins closely linked with Adam.

If it could possibly be accepted then look for other names with meanings associated with "Earth"

You also mention what the family want. I'd suggest not consulting with them further (DH aside), announcing the name when baby arrives and telling them how it links to BIL. Naming in memory of someone is a lovely thing to do but equally I know of a woman who has a male middle name in honour of a deceased uncle who she never met, and she just finds it mortifying. It has to be done in a way that's fair on you (i.e. you get a choice) and also fair on the child when they probably won't ever feel the level of connection to BIL that those of you who knew him have.

FTB2023 · 09/09/2023 11:13

Could you clarify what you mean by 'family preference'? Who else gets a preference in your child's name other than you and her father?
I understand that your dh's family have lost a loved one way to soon. But I'm a bit concerned about the apparent need to have his full name represented in your daughters name.
You don't say how recently they were bereaved but it feels a bit uncomfortable to me.
Your suggestion of Ada as a reference but not full replication sounds more than appropriate.

Star0Fire · 09/09/2023 11:15

What about a double barrel first name like
Ada-Marie , I think that is beautiful

Loopytiles · 09/09/2023 11:20

The family suggestions of made up names are all awful!

it’s a girl so if you use the full name it’d sound like two surnames eg Ada Adam Smith.

maltesermagnet · 09/09/2023 11:20

Amanda? I mean it does have all the letters?

People make up names, I once knew an Evanee so maybe you could go that route...? Not my cup of ☕️ but..

Adamie
Adamya
Pradamiya

There's got to be something better!

Hadamia!
Padama?

This is a great suggestion and so much better than those dreadful made-up names in the OP.

Adam is a lovely name. You're not honouring him by butchering it with random letters on the end to try and make a girl's name. If you absolutely must use it, just use Adam. There are girls called James and Dylan and Cameron and so on. Just have a girl called Adam/Adam as middle name if you absolutely must.
