Female version of Adam?

KM81 · 09/09/2023 10:43

We want to honour my BIL who’s no longer with us but struggling to think of how to use Adam as a girls (middle) name. I liked Ada but the family preference is to include Adam in its entirety. So far the only suggestions have been Adamina (hard no from me), Adama or Adamay.

Any thoughts or other suggestions please?

Adam is a lovely name, but I think it's crazy that you are having to choose that name for your daughter. It must be terrible that he has died, but I can't see naming a girl with his name is going to help things

Thanks all, there’s some really good suggestions that I do actually like, though also think I’ll revisit Ada with my DH first.

The family haven’t been pushy per se, just expressed opinions which is my own fault for bringing it up too soon before we’d decided on how to include.

Is something like Araminta too far removed?!

Could you have 3 middle names so initials spell A.D.A.M?

Tbh i think just using Adam is nicer, or save it for a boy if appropriate.

It's her name, so you need to be happy with it.

WaltzingWaters · 09/09/2023 12:04

Team Ada. Making up a name like Adamina just sounds rather silly. I understand the want to celebrate the whole name, but it’s just not always possible with the opposite sex. I wanted to use my late mums name as a middle name, but we had a boy and couldn’t find an appropriate way to do so, so we picked a non-related name.

Don’t let your in-laws put pressure on you, you (and DH of course) get to decide, though I know it’s a sensitive subject.

StorminanDcup · 09/09/2023 12:07

I actually really like Adamay. I think that’s really pretty, it doesn’t look that pretty written down but when you say it Ada-mae it’s nice!

In fairness whilst it’s nice to include his name, she has to live with it and having Adam as a middle name for a girl is a little out of the ordinary. I’d personally go with Ada. End of. She’s your baby not a name plaque.

GoodVibesHere · 09/09/2023 12:08

I mean it's a lovely idea but surely you can only do it if you have a boy. As a female, I''d bloody hate to be called Adam.

Could you do two middle names? So for example

Ada Marie
Ada Madeline
Ada Meredith

So the name Adam is there, but it isn't as obvious.

This is the best idea. And frankly it doesn't matter about family preference

Starlightstarbright2 · 09/09/2023 12:10

I would just say keep others other than dp out of discussions

Georgina125 · 09/09/2023 12:10

Maybe it doesn't have to be his name but something else associated with him? We lost 2 sons before having our daughter and wanted to honour them, but in a subtle way (their names didn't have nice female counter-parts either). As it turned out, the name we both liked best also happened to be a colour we associated with our late younger son. So we chose a middle name using the colour we associated with our late older son. I won't say the names we used but think names like Violet, Ruby, Lavender, Jade, Amber and Rose.

SevenOhOne · 09/09/2023 12:15

Seriously don’t lumber your daughter with a name you don’t like in order to honour your BIL. I’m sure he wouldn’t have wanted that.

Ada is a good option if you like it, Eve would also work. Either would be more than enough, IMO.

Catlover1705 · 09/09/2023 12:23

Madeleine or Maddy as contains all the letters of Adam.

spilltheteapot · 09/09/2023 12:27

Great suggestions from PPs.
what about:

Ada May
Ada Maeve
Ada Matilda

or

Eve Ada May
Evelyn Adeline
etc

These are nice, but I’d avoid Ada Maeve - sounds quite Adam and Eve 😂

TheWayofBeing · 09/09/2023 13:01

Mina or Minna are apparently the Hebrew alternatives to Adam. Meaning of the red Earth.

Snittle · 09/09/2023 13:05

Madaline starts with Adam spelt backward?

Starchipenterprise · 09/09/2023 16:24

Ada is a great suggestion, it's a real name and doesn't sound fabricated, I once had a relative where they tried to feminise the fathers name. It was clearly made up and not even pretty - a total disaster of a name. An the sad thing was - no-one ever shortened it. She never got away from it!

ConstantlyCooking · 09/09/2023 18:53

I know an Adiama.

neverenoughwine · 09/09/2023 19:44

I'm not sure there's a female of version of Adam that could be made up, that sounds like a real name? I think Adamina would be the female version. Personally, that's a no!

How about Eden or Eve?

Or maybe Addie?

I'm sure your BIL wouldn't want you to choose something you don't love! Did he have any middle names, or a favourite place or hobby, or anything else that could give you some inspiration? ❤️

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 09/09/2023 20:07

Addison means son of Adam?

NoMor · 09/09/2023 21:32

Adame seems the most obvious!

Feliciacat · 09/09/2023 21:40

Hey, this is a bit out there but could you give her the middle name of Addams? Then it’d just look like she had two surnames which is normal so wouldn’t embarrass her. Plus if she became a goth she’d love having Addams in her name. The Addams Family are pretty timeless.

If you want a more standard suggestion then I think Adalina is pretty and quite like Adam.

PermanentTemporary · 09/09/2023 21:44

Gaia? Another Earth name,.though Mina is obviously closer.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/09/2023 21:58

I don't think Ada works. The first "A" is pronounced "Ah" rather than "Ah".

LilyLemonade · 09/09/2023 23:35

You could just give her the initial A.

Lily A. Stevens (for example)

Boomboom22 · 09/09/2023 23:42

Adame is nice. Mina is good too.
